The American Liver Foundation Applauds Steven Tyler

PR Newswire via Yahoo! Finance (Press Release)
September 30, 2006

New York, Sept. 30 /PR Newswire/ -- The American Liver Foundation (ALF), a national nonprofit organization that provides education, advocacy and research on behalf of the 30 million Americans affected by liver disease, today thanked Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith, for his recent announcement that he has been battling hepatitis C, a dangerous liver disease that claims 8,000 - 10,000 lives a year in the United States.

"Mr. Tyler has done something very commendable," said Fred Thompson, president and CEO of the American Liver Foundation. "By speaking out about his personal struggle with hepatitis C, he helps draw attention to a terrible disease that affects almost 4 million Americans. We need more brave people to speak out about this terrible disease that is far too often ignored. It is estimated that, for the years 2010-2019, the direct and indirect costs of hepatitis C to the U.S. health care system will be $85 billion. More proof of how liver disease affects all Americans."

Hepatitis C is the most common blood-borne infection in the United States. "There are 36,000 new cases of hepatitis C in the U.S. each year," said Thompson. "But many of those infected have no idea they are sick because the disease doesn't have any specific symptoms. If Mr. Tyler's action can motivate more people to get the simple blood test necessary to screen for the disease, he will have improved the lives of thousands..."

Billboard single reviews:

Reuters via Yahoo!7 Music News
September 30, 2006

Artist:  Aerosmith

Single:  Devil's Got a New Disguise

NEW YORK (Billboard) - This new track from an upcoming hits collection stands notably tall among the enduring band's redwood-high stack of hits. Steven Tyler growls and teases with signature vim as he revels in the charms of a woman named Kay: "The girl's so witchin', my backbone's twitchin'/ Cause down in Hell's kitchen, the devil's got a new disguise." Bandmates Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer stir up a gallon of instrumental sweat alongside, making this a promising new performance vehicle for Aerosmith, which just launched a gargantuan North American tour with Motley Crue. These guys know how to punch hits home, thematically, melodically and with irresistible attitude. Thirty years in, Aerosmith maintains a devil of a hip factor.

New Message From Tom

Aero Force One
September 29, 2006

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The other night I was listening to the messages that had been piling up on my cellphone. I'm pretty bad at keeping track and returning messages but I've been worse since I've been recuperating from that nasty radiation treatment. All of a sudden, there was Steven reminding me that the band was going to be in Boston in a couple of days and why don't I come down and play Sweet Emotion. My first reaction was no way. Not only do I feel like crap, I look it too. But I couldn't stop thinking about it. It just felt right. I missed everybody. So I decided to consider it. If the day came and I wasn't up to it I could always bail.

The day came and I felt pretty decent so I headed down to the gig. Terry, Sage and I got there about 8:45. The band was going on at 9:15 so I wanted to be there close to when they went on. My throat has been really sore and it gets much worse when I talk. There are so many people I wanted to say hi to. I knew I had to minimize my time there. The second I got to my little private room Donny set up, Joe appeared and proceded to fill me in on everything I hadn't heard back through the grapevine. Then Brad, Joey and several crew guys came in including my trusty tech Jerry. Steven was somewhere doing some footage for a National Geographic special so I'd have to see him right before show-time. Everybody treated me like an honored guest which was nice but weird. It made me want to get back out on the road and just be one of the daily sights.

Before I knew it Donny ran in and gave me the signal that the show was starting. I ran down into the crew area at the back of the stage and peeked out. I have to say it was really cool watching them(!) go onstage. I had three songs to listen to before Sweet Emotion and by God those guys are good! Truly it sounded excellent!

Along came Sweet E. I waited for the lights to go down and then crept over to my amp. I gave Dave (my fill in guy) a high five. By that time the lights were back up and Steven was giving me a good old fashioned intro. I started playing the spacey sounding beginning of the song and felt no different than the last time we played it on our last tour. Then the part came where the whole band comes in and all the lights start blazing away and I felt like I was on Jupiter for a few seconds. It took a few minutes for my brain to catch up with my surroundings. Kind of like when you stand up too fast and see stars before you get used to being on your feet. Things came into focus pretty fast and I was treated with the sight of a rockin' audience in front of me and my smilin' buds all around me. Everything sounded, looked and felt amazing. I realized in a second why I had decided to come down to the gig that night. It was only a small taste but enough to really make me look forward to when I re-join the tour for good.

Steven Tyler Praised by Patient Groups

Aero Force One
September 29, 2006

As one of 180 million people affected by hepatitis C around the world, Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith, has received praise from international patient organizations for talking openly about his battle with hepatitis C. The announcement from Steven Tyler comes just days before World Hepatitis Awareness Day 2006.

Muriel Colinet, President of the European Liver Patient Association (ELPA), expressed her gratitude to Steven Tyler, saying that "Steven Tyler has taken the important and brave step to reveal his hepatitis C status, a move that is vital if we are to succeed in our battle to combat this devastating disease." She added that "only by talking openly about the disease and by encouraging people who might be at risk to get tested can we begin to tackle this global problem."

Steven Tyler adds his name to that of a number of celebrities, including Sir Bob Geldof, who are attempting to raise awareness of hepatitis B and C, diseases that affect almost 600 million people worldwide. Speaking in a pre-recorded message at the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe on Tuesday, Sir Bob Geldof explained that "stigma, shame and fear can suffocate awareness. These barriers prevent people from getting tested, getting treatment and clearing themselves of the disease."

Sunday, October 1, 2006, marks the third annual World Hepatitis Awareness Day. The theme for this year is "Get Tested" and people at risk from the disease are encouraged to do just that — get tested.

For more information regarding activities around the world, visit www.worldhepatitisawarenessday.com.

The show tonight was great, maybe even a little better than Tuesday night. Everything was really tight tonight. Joe came and sat on my lap and Steven was on top of his game. The animation we have added to the show is awesome and when the crowd sees it they go nuts. I love the hometown crowd. I love Boston, we can't wait to come back and we'll see you soon!

Movin’ out? Not according to Perry

Boston Globe, MA
September 28, 2006

Joe Perry's days in Duxbury aren't numbered after all. The Aerosmith ax man and his wife, Billie, told us they've decided to sell the Vermont farm they bought a few years back and will instead be sticking close to their Duxbury digs. The couple moved to the South Shore in 1988 and have grown attached to their impressive 8-acre compound, which includes a main house, a guest house, barn, garages, and ponds. During Aerosmith's Tweeter Center show Tuesday, Perry introduced "Dirty Water" by saying: "There's a rumor that I moved to Vermont." It ain't so. Boston, you're Joe's home. . . .

Aerosmith still stirs sweet emotion

Worcester Telegram & Gazette, MA
September 28, 2006

Mansfield — With bass player Tom Hamilton on the mend and off the road as he undergoes cancer treatment, and singer Steven Tyler making the revelation that he has been battling Hepatitis C not so long after returning to work following surgery to repair damaged vocal cords, expectations may have been lowered among the sellout crowd assembled to see Aerosmith Tuesday at The Tweeter Center.

Well, it did not take long for Aerosmith to erase any doubts about its abilities. From a blistering opening punch of “Toys in the Attic” and “Mama Kin” that had Tyler executing vocal gymnastics to a surprise appearance by Hamilton, who brought down the house when he performed with the band on “Sweet Emotion,” it was clear that Aerosmith still has the power to beat back whatever tries to bedevil the band.

Aerosmith is in the midst of a tour with Motley Crue, and both bands are back at the Tweeter Center tonight. Bass player David Hull, an alum of Aerosmith guitar god Joe Perry’s solo band, is filling in for Hamilton as he undergoes treatment for throat cancer. And Hull blended just fine with guitarist Brad Whitford, drummer Joey Kramer, Tyler, and Perry. Aerosmith shaped its show to please old-time fans, bypassing its ballads and pop hits of recent years in favor of blues-drenched bar rockers.

While Aerosmith did everything right, Motley Crue could barely get it right during an opening set that swayed between laughable and painful. At this stage of the game, someone really must tell Vince Neil that he no longer has a singing voice. And bass player Nikki Sixx, whose reckless ways and trashy look once represented the essence of Crue-ness, is little more than a caricature on stage. Thankfully, Motley Crue guitarist, the cadaverous Mick Mars, and drummer, the crazed Tommy Lee, still put in a solid night’s work, igniting whatever is left of such charred strip-club anthems as “Dr. Feelgood,” “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Shout at the Devil.”

What Crue lacked in raw talent it replaced with a barrage of strobe lights, explosions and dancing girls; hence, the crowd saw a lot of strobe lights, explosions and dancing girls.

In contrast, Aerosmith played on a large, bare stage. The band enhanced its music with some sharp lighting, and caused more heat than all of Crue’s pyro simply by having Perry and Tyler occasionally saunter into the crowd along a walkway extending from the stage.

The bulk of Aerosmith’s 15-song set favored its 1970s heyday. The band played the big ones, such as “Dream On” and “Walk This Way” from that era, as well as deeper album cuts, turning “S.O.S.” into a fast, punky rant and “Seasons of Wither” into a dramatic high point in the show.

The band devoted a big chunk of the concert to its blues-rock origins. Tyler, who sported a Darth Vader-like array of wireless microphone gear around his trunk, led the charge through “Baby Please Don’t Go,” while Perry took the reins for spirited covers of “Stop Messin’ Around” and the Boston anthem “Dirty Water” (played as the guitarist’s way of saying he is moving back to the Hub from Vermont).

Aerosmith lit into overdrive when playing the primal “Rattle Snake Shake,” turning the swaggering blues exercise into an extended jam that had everyone in the band showboating in the best of ways.

Aerosmith made a detour into the ’90s toward the end of the show when it played the doo-wop-inflected “Cryin’ ” and funny “Eat the Rich.” But the band left the stage tanked up again on the good ol’ stuff, unleashing a raw and tough “Draw the Line” before its encore break. The band returned for spirited takes on “Love in an Elevator” and “Walk This Way.”

As Aerosmith miraculously improves with time, Motley Crue is suffering the ravages of time. The band, its songs, and its sound all came across as woefully dated, and the set turned in Tuesday only diminished whatever nostalgic appeal the band might have been carrying into the show that night.

Aerosmith fires up healthy dose of epic rock

Boston Herald, MA
September 27, 2006

Tweeter Center, September 26, 2006 in Mansfield.
(Staff photo by Douglas McFadd)

Apparently there’s a big difference between the walking wounded and the rockin’ wounded. The juxtaposition of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Motley Crue’s Vince Neil made that all too apparent at last night’s Tweeter Center show. Even with a litany of ailments - and a decade more of hard living than Neil - Tyler made the Crue frontman look over the hill.

Both Aerosmith and Motley Crue have had their fair share of health problems. Drug and alcohol addictions aside, the two bands could still fill an appendix in the physician’s desk reference. Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars has struggled with a degenerative bone condition called ankylosing spondylitis since the ’80s and needed a hip replacement because of complications from the illness.

Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton is recovering from radiation treatment for throat cancer. And Tyler recently disclosed he’s been battling hepatitis C and, earlier this year, he underwent experimental surgery to repair a popped blood vessel in his throat. But where Motley Crue sounded ill, Aerosmith sounded better than ever.

From the opening song, “Toys in the Attic,” to the closer, “Walk this Way,” Aerosmith rocked like men half their age. They came out with Gibson guitars a-blazin’ and, for the first hour of their set, played only their best ’70s material, along with a few classic blues standards.

The night’s highlight came when Tyler stopped the show to ask the fans if they knew how Hamilton was doing. Before the crowd could respond, Hamilton walked out on stage with his bass to a euphoric cheer.

“I got a message from Steven today,” he said. “He told me, ‘Why don’t you get yourself out of bed and play.’ ”

The band then launched into a very emotional version of “Sweet Emotion” before Hamilton left the stage.

The whole night, Aerosmith’s members seemed to flaunt their improving health. During “Baby, Please Don’t Go,” Tyler played a blaring harmonica and sang with amazing power. His voice had never sounded better as he shouted and shrieked (hopefully Tyler gave Neil his doctor’s card because the Motley Crue frontman desperately needs some vocal help).

Even Joe Perry’s voice was strong - of course not as strong as his fierce guitar playing. To clear up any rumors that Perry had moved to Vermont, he sang lead vocals on a dirty blues version of “Dirty Water” that had the crowd crooning along.

Yup, the Boston boys still got it. “Love in an Elevator” worked perfectly. “Mama Kin” had what it takes. And “Dream On” was right on.

With a dozen hits to choose from and a bunch of platinum records, Motley Crue couldn’t compete. Neil’s voice is shot, their sound man should be shot, and they’re over the hill - as Neil bounced around the stage, he got increasing blotchy and out of breath. At one point he even apologized for his voice.

It’s a shame, because the band’s visual show was amazing, with huge explosions, intense video screens and women dancing in iron cages 30 feet above the stage. But it was all looks and no substance. Hopefully, next time around, Aerosmith will find a co-headliner they won’t embarrass so badly.

Aerosmith proves they're natural rockers

Boston Globe, MA
September 27, 2006

Mansfield -- The National Geographic Channel picked a good night to capture Aerosmith in its natural habitat.

Steven Tyler's revived voice. Bassist Tom Hamilton's surprise appearance on "Sweet Emotion." A shiver-inducing "Seasons of Wither" complete with gently falling faux snow. Joe Perry's shockingly extroverted singing. The fact that they didn't play the execrable "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

You can take your pick from any of those reasons to explain why the Aerosmith show last night at the Tweeter Center was near perfect.

The hard-rocking hometown boys rarely disappoint but last night's performance ( the first of two, with the second tomorrow) was touched with a little pixie dust. The near-capacity crowd seemed to sense it, giving as good as they got throughout a 90-minute show that the cable network was taping for a piece on Tyler's experimental throat surgery.

It was most assuredly a success. The serpentine frontman -- who for the purposes of the TV show was wired into a contraption that ran from his throat to his snazzy red trousers -- ran a slew of old songs through those new pipes, and his wails and whispers and grunts and growls were robust, especially on the peaks of "Dream On," "Wither," and "Draw The Line."

Hamilton, who is undergoing treatment for throat cancer, was given a hero's welcome and the band fed off his joy. David Hull ably filled his shoes the rest of the night.

Fans of the band's post-comeback material may have gone home a bit blue, but a smoking treatment of "Baby, Please Don't Go," the way-old-school sass of "S.O.S. (Too Bad)," and Perry's amped-up version of "Dirty Water" felt like more than a fair trade-off for say, "Pink" (but not "Janie's Got a Gun.")

Motley Crue's Vince Neil might want to get the number of Tyler's doctor, as his voice was in a sorry state.

During the course of the veteran Los Angeles metal quartet's disjointed 75-minute performance, Neil's voice went from disappointing to downright pitiable as the singer -- who apologized a third of the way through, saying he was doing the best he could -- struggled to deliver the hit-filled set .

The crowd took over on the first verse of "Home Sweet Home" and the look of gratitude on Neil's face elicited more sympathy than when he lived in "The Surreal Life" house. Unfortunately his croaking on "Same Ol' Situation" and "Girls, Girls, Girls" tempered that compassion.

No amount of hissing serpents, ostentatious pyro, or scantily clad dancing girls in cages could distract. Guitarist Mick Mars may have looked frail -- he suffers from a degenerative rheumatic disease -- but it was his impressive soloing -- truly fierce and liquid -- and drummer Tommy Lee's Tasmanian Devil pounding that rescued the Crue's portion of the "Route of All Evil" tour.

No appetite for eatery

Boston Herald, MA
September 26, 2006

Aerosmith axman - and hot sauce sultan - Joe Perry reports he’s no longer an investor in Mount Blue in Norwell.

“We totally dropped out,” the Duxbury rocker told the Track. “We couldn’t participate in the restaurant as much as we’d like to. And we haven’t been around to even go in to eat. So we figured we’d let Jayne (Bowe) run it without us.”

Back in 1997, Perry and his fellow bad boy bandmate Steven Tyler, fed up with the lack of decent eats in their South Shore hometowns, partnered up with Bowe and a few others to open the Norwell eatery.

But now that Joe and the fam divide their time between homes in Deluxe-bury, Vermont and Florida - not to mention the time on the road - felt the need to divest his stake in the eatery.

“I just want to focus on the hot sauces as the extracurricular activity,” said the Rock Your World sauce mogul.

Bowe, according to Joe, is opening a second Mount Blue on the South Shore.

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler Reveals Battle With Hepatitis C

Access Hollywood
September 25, 2006

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

LOS ANGELES (September 25, 2006) -- Rock legend and Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler revealed to Access Hollywood that he has been fighting a secret battle with Hepatitis C.

Tyler revealed to Access he was diagnosed with the infection three years ago.

"I've been pretty quiet about this. The band took a break about three years ago and I've had Hepatitis C for a long time, asymptomatic. And I talked to my doctor... and he said now is the time and it's 11 months of chemotherapy. So I went on that and it about killed me," Tyler said.

Hepatitis C is a viral infection of the blood. The infection can cause liver inflammation that is often asymptomatic, but ensuing chronic Hepatitis can result later in cirrhosis and liver cancer.

It is a disease spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person. Hepatitis C is often associated with used needles.

Tyler said it hasn't easy to deal with the disease and the treatment took a toll on his body -- and his marriage.

His marriage to clothing designer Teresa Barrick was falling apart at the time of his treatments, and they were divorced earlier this year.

"I had a little problem at home, to say the least," he says, "and I would run upstairs at night, you know, to put the kids asleep and wake up at 3 in the morning with a nosebleed you know, just passed out from the interferon,
the treatment. It's a shot and pills and all of that. But the good news is I stood the test of time."

About 4.5 million Americans suffer from Hepatitis C, which is hard to detect but can cause scarring of the liver and lead to cirrhosis. In 2002, Pamela Anderson announced that she, too, has the disease.

But now Tyler is happy to say that the disease is gone from his bloodstream.

"It is non-existent in my bloodstream as we speak so it's one of those few miracles that in doctoring where it's like a complete cure. It's gone," he said.

Tyler said he hopes his battle with the disease might raise awareness in others.

"Hepatitis C is the one that of all the people in this room at least three have it and don't know it. It's the silent killer. I may go on Oprah and talk about this. I mean you know it's just one of those things... it's one of those things people don't speak about it, but it is treatable. It's non-detectable in my bloodstream and so that's that," he added.

For more with Steven Tyler, tune in to Tuesday's Access Hollywood (check local listings).

Still in the saddle: Despite ills, Aerosmith keeps a rollin’

Boston Herald, MA
September 25, 2006

Aerosmith is not immortal.

Hold on for a minute, and don’t send the Herald hate mail. We aren’t saying Aerosmith isn’t Boston’s - nay, America’s - greatest rock band. We’ve just noticed that the eternally youthful bad boys are creeping toward mortality.

Bassist Tom Hamilton is recovering from radiation treatment for throat cancer and isn’t expected to rejoin Aerosmith’s Route of All Evil tour until late October at the earliest. (Which means fans going to tomorrow and Thursday’s shows with Motley Crue at the Tweeter Center will see David Hull of the Joe Perry Project, Hamilton’s handpicked replacement, filling in for him).

And at the beginning of the year, the band was forced to cancel some live dates when singer Steven Tyler underwent experimental surgery to repair a popped blood vessel in his throat.

“There’s always a period when a tour starts when everything is kind of rough, but frankly these last few gigs have been going a lot better than I thought they would,” said guitarist Joe Perry, 56, from New York City the day after the band’s second Jones Beach show.

“Steven’s voice sounds great and David is fitting in well. But we do want Tom back soon. Everyone in the band plays a part to keep this Aerosmith juggernaut going. This will work for a while, but it won’t work forever without Tom.”

The band may be showing its age, but it’s as busy as ever. The group’s tour with Motley Crue is making more than 30 stops from Boston to San Diego. It may seem strange that Aerosmith - the poster boys of rock sobriety - would pair with the depraved, debauched and decadent Crue, but Perry doesn’t see a conflict.

“I kind of stay out of what people do onstage,” the former Toxic Twin said. “What matters to me is that we put on the best show we can - and that’s what matters to those guys, too. Some of them drink, some of them don’t. They’ve been through a lot of ups and downs as well, but they do what it takes to get onstage and put on the show that the fans expect and pay for.”

Beyond the tour, there is a lot of new Aerosmith music on the horizon. OK, even with two new tracks, their October greatest-hits package - the band’s sixth singles anthology - isn’t all that exciting. But in February, Perry and company return to the studio to finish their 15th studio album. After decades of pumping out iconic riffs such as the ones in “Walk this Way” and “Back in the Saddle,” the guitarist said he’s still got a lot of music left in him.

“Sometimes I wake up and feel like there is nothing there,” he said. “But I’ve been in that position so many times. Sure enough, I sit down and stuff comes out. It’s been that way for 30 years. I’ll probably end up with 15 pieces of music that don’t end up on the new record. Maybe they’ll end up on another Aerosmith record or another solo record. We’ll see what time allows.”

Right now it seems like time is allowing for plenty more, even with the bumps in the road that come with aging. The band has already committed to playing Europe next year and will hit a bunch of the major festivals. Perry said they’ll take some major young bands with them on a package tour but can’t say who until the deals are inked.

“I still think Motley Crue is a young band, so I guess it’s all relative,” he said with a chuckle. “But expect a band that’s been really popular in the last 10 years.”

Aerosmith, with Motley Crue, at the Tweeter Center, Mansfield, tomorrow and Thursday. Tickets: $49.50-$125; 617-931-2000.

A Crue of Aero-dynamic men continues to rock

Times-Beacon, NJ
September 24, 2006

Holmdel -— Tommy Lee is an avid Aerosmith fan.

Who knew?

At the kickoff of their Route of All Evil Tour at the PNC Bank Arts Center, and after a grueling set with Motley Crue, the manic drummer sat on stage behind a speaker wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, pumping his arms with as much excitement as the fans while Steven Tyler and Joe Perry rocked out Aerosmith tunes.

This is the first time the two groups are touring together. The event began in Holmdel on Sept. 14, schedules stops from New Jersey to California and ends in Florida.

Motley Crue played a blistering 90-minute set, pumped by Lee's drums and Vince Neil's high-pitched vocals. A rousing version of "Dr. Feelgood" started the show at an ear-splitting decibel level that never lagged. Other Crue numbers, with Nikki Sixx on bass and Mick Mars on guitar, included "Home Sweet Home," "Helter Skelter," "Same Ol' Situation" and "Girls, Girls, Girls."

The stage was a goth-rock lover's dream, decorated with three tall iron cross-like sculptures, and the show featured extravagant special effects, including fire, fireworks, smoke, sexy female dancers and a rope artist dangling above the stage.

Film on the screens — one large one on stage behind the bands and smaller ones on each side of the stage — alternated images of the bands with sometimes bizarre music-video images, including the usual heavy metal icons — crosses, skulls, flames and scantily clad women.

But the energy was in the performance, with Lee pounding the skins relentlessly — and shirtlessly, all the better to see his range of tattoos.

Neil's unique voice pierced through the thundering bass and howling guitar notes.

A raging guitar-smashing by Sixx closed the Crue show.

That set the stage for a raucous, blues rock-oriented Aerosmith routine.

Lead singer Steven Tyler danced onto the stage in tight red and black leather pants and a leopard-print jacket and scarf, with guitarist Joe Perry clad in a dark blue jacket and black leather pants for the opener, "Jaded."

Tyler dedicated the set to bass player Tom Hamilton, who is recovering from radiation and chemotherapy treatment for throat cancer and hopes to join the tour in October. David Hull filled in for Hamilton, joining regulars Brad Whitford on guitar and Joey Kramer on drums.

A 70-foot-long ramp stretched from the stage into the crowd and gave the crowd an up close and personal look at Tyler and Perry, who both strutted along the catwalk.

Aerosmith classics included "Eat the Rich," "Dream On," "Last Child," "Sweet Emotion," "Cryin', " "My Big 10 Inch" and "Walk This Way," with several burning guitar solos from Perry and incendiary harmonica riffs from Tyler, while numerals flashed on the three screens during "Love in an Elevator."

Surprisingly, Perry made more costume changes than Tyler, including a leather vest without shirt that indicated he's been putting in some serious gym time and a silk magenta shirt, with which he whipped the stage after a long solo.

Although the decibel level dropped a tad with the Aerosmith set, the sellout crowd was still standing, even after being on their feet throughout the Crue performance. The only sitting occurred during the long intermission for set changes.

While both groups have been around for years, they still appeal to more than one generation. I attended with my daughter Adrienne and granddaughters Jillian and Kaitlyn and we all loved the show.

We have yet to figure out how Tyler hits those high notes after throat surgery, and how Lee can pound the drums so consistently for 90 minutes.

But the music — not how they made it — was what mattered to the fans.

Next up for Aerosmith is a spring album. Motley Crue will be the subject of a documentary film titled "Dirt," based on the group's autobiography.

Lee will tour with his new band after complying with a court order that followed a trademark infringement suit regarding its name. Gilby Clarke, former Guns N' Roses guitarist, and Jason Newsted, ex-Metallica bassist, are part of the band, which will be fronted by Lukas Rossi. Instead of Supernova, already the name of a California punk band, the new group will be called Rock Star Supernova, after the TV series in which Lukas Rossi won the gig as the band's frontman. Their debut CD is due Nov. 21 and their tour, with "Rock Star" host Dave Navarro's new band Panic Channel, kicks off at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve.

The Way Joey Kramer Sees It

Aero Force One
September 23, 2006

From The Best Seat In The House

Camden, NJ - 9.23.2006

We played fewer songs tonight but we played for the same amount of time. We added "Rattlesnake Shake" to the set and put a jam in it. We started the set with "Train" instead of "Toys". Steven has a chest cold and his throat was hurting a little bit. But instead of cancelling the show Steven said f*$k it and came out and put on a great show. Now we have two days off and then onto Boston, and we're gonna kill em!

Aerosmith Is Too Busy With The Present
To Live In The Past

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Aerosmith's flashy frontman,
Steven Tyler

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry says he hears more and more fans say they want the veteran Boston rockers to make a CD that sounds like "Toys in the Attic," "Rocks" or one of the group’s other early records.

Perry and the other members of Aerosmith, many of whom live or have lived on the South Shore, though, can’t oblige that request.

Perry said it’s not that he wouldn’t like to fulfill the wishes of such fans. The reality is that Aerosmith simply can’t go back to its past.

"Sometimes we’ll write something and I think it sounds like that and people will turn around and go, 'Wow, it’s good, but we really like the way the old stuff sounds. Do a record like that,'" Perry said in a recent phone interview. "I’m not really sure what it is. I think it’s more that those records were written and done and they took place at a time. Even though like technically you could put together a song that has all the sound and all the feel, it’s still not that classic song because a classic song is a song that’s 20 or 30 years old. All you can do is just follow your heart and go with what rocks our boat."

That doesn’t mean Perry and his bandmates - drummer Joey Kramer of Marshfield, guitarist Brad Whitford of Norwell, lead singer Steven Tyler of Marshfield and bassist Tom Hamilton of Boston - won’t get closer to the group’s early sound on the next Aerosmith album. On this tour, David Hull of Plymouth is filling in for Hamilton, who is recovering from [treatment for] throat [cancer]...

In fact, Perry said he wants to capture more of the group’s live feel on the next CD, which figures to be recorded this winter.

That’s a recording approach Aerosmith used on the 2004 CD, "Honkin’ on Bobo," a collection of hard-rocking versions of blues songs mixed in with a few original tunes. It was recorded in Perry’s home studio named The Boneyard, when he lived in Duxbury. While well-equipped, the studio was hardly a spacious professional studio, he said. But that was part of the raucous CD’s charm, and the experience of recording the record reinvigorated the band.

"I think the big thing on 'Honking on Bobo' was putting the band elbow to elbow and steamrolling through songs," Perry said. "There was an energy, whether it was a song that we wrote or we were covering an old classic, there was an energy to it that you can’t get by just overdubbing here and there. You just have to have everybody in there doing it."

This live-in-the-studio approach was something Aerosmith had not used since its early albums, Perry said.

"In the ’80s there was this big trend with going back and recutting the track," Perry said. "Looking back at it, I look at it now as kind of an exercise in redundancy or something. We’d go in and get a great basic track with everybody playing great, and then they’d go back in and redo the drums. Then they’d go and redo the guitar and then they’d redo the bass. In the end, what have you got left from the original performance? Probably 50 or 60 percent of the songs we did were like that. But that was kind of how Bruce (Fairbairn) produced the records. He’d kind of get an idea of what the songs were going to be without actually mastering them. It worked for us. But we’re good enough players that we can pretty much cut tracks (live) and have those be the finished tracks."

So it’s no surprise that Perry said the band plans to do a good bit of live-in-the-studio recording. But Perry also said some songs call for more of an instrument-by-instrument approach with a good number of overdubs, so the band is open to that as well.

The band has what Perry said is enough material to form a backbone for the new CD, but more writing is obviously in the group’s plans.

One twist this time is that the group is likely to resurrect some songs that were either recorded and left off previous CDs or complete some older songs that never got finished.

"In the frenzy of the MTV era, certain songs just weren’t meant to be out there," Perry said. "We have been looking back at the old stuff. Some of it’s really exciting because we have a feeling there are going to be some songs we’ve wanted to get at for a long time and had never done for whatever reason."

Perry and the other band members will have to set aside their search of the band’s archives for a few months. That’s because the band will spend the fall on tour, with 1980s pop metal icons Motley Crue opening the shows. They play the Tweeter Center Tuesday and Thursday; the Mohegan Sun on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1; the TD Banknorth Garden Nov. 12; and the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence on Nov. 14.

This tour follows a fall 2005/winter 2006 trek that had to be cut short in March after Tyler developed a throat problem that eventually required surgery. The vocal problems, of course, were a major concern not just for Tyler, but for the rest of the band.

But Perry said the surgery was a success and Tyler is back singing at full roar.

"We were there when it (the surgery) went down. We were crossing our fingers (that) we didn’t hear anything (bad)," Perry said. "There were no signs of anything other than just road wear. But the doctor, you really don’t know until you get in there. We were there in the waiting room when the doctor came out and said everything is fine and if anything, his voice will sound better. That’s indeed what’s happened. His voice is right there. He’s amazing."

The surgery confirmed that Tyler, who with his raw and rangy voice remains one of rock’s most identifiable vocalists, has a special talent.

"The doctor said this guy’s got a pretty unique (vocal structure). He’s pretty much one in a million when it comes to how his throat and voice box is set up," Perry said. "When I first heard him sing, I can remember all I said - I really didn’t know him that well at that point - but when I heard him sing I said, well whatever it takes, I want to be in a band with this guy. I’ve never heard anybody like him."

The relationship between Perry and Tyler - and the band as a whole - has certainly been tested in the years since the group formed in 1970 in Sunapee, N.H. Most notably, after reaching superstar status with the albums "Toys in the Attic," "Rocks" and "Draw the Line," the band, beset by drug and alcohol problems, saw Perry quit in 1979, followed by Whitford two years later.

A revamped version of Aerosmith soldiered on with lackluster results until 1985, when the original lineup regrouped, cleaned up and regained its hitmaking touch with the 1987 CD "Permanent Vacation" and the 1989 release "Pump"

For the first part of the tour with Motley Crue, the band will be without bassist Hamilton, who is recovering from treatment for throat cancer. Plymouth’s Hull, who played in the Joe Perry Project, is filling in.

Perry said the band, with or without Hamilton, will incorporate a new twist into its live sets.

"We’re going to do something we’ve done in the past, but not in the recent past," he said. "Steven and I are going to do a little acoustic set. The band will be playing on, but it’ll be definitely more of an intimate moment. That’s something we’ve done. I remember we used to do that even before the band was signed. It’s just we haven’t done it in a long while."

Steven Tyler Rocks Charlie Sheen's House

TVGuide.com

Steven Tyler with Charlie Sheen
on Two and a Half Men

The lead singer of Aerosmith playing his badass self on CBS' Two and a Half Men? Dream on, you might say, but this Monday at 9 pm/ET, Steven Tyler makes the first of what could turn out to be many recurring appearances as Charlie Sheen's hard-partying, hard-rocking neighbor. TV Guide spoke with Tyler about why he decided to walk this way, onto a sitcom set.

TV Guide: Why did you do Men?
Steven Tyler:
I get hit up for a lot of these shows — [I guess] they want a piece of me as long as I am still walking around coherent — so I can pick my poison. Playing along with Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer and the fat kid [Angus T. Jones] was fun.

TV Guide: Tell us about what you're doing in the episode.
Tyler:
I am off camera for much of it, so I sit next to an open microphone and play my music, simulate sex, pop tops, open the refrigerator [a lot].... The actual houses down there in Malibu Colony are beyond next door to each other, so I just did everything — including making references to Pamela Anderson. It is so perfect for me to live next door. Charlie is up [late one night] trying to put this [ad jingle] rhyme together, and I start making fun of him. He says, "Shut the hell up, Tyler." He tries to beat me up, I beat him up.... It is a real moment, it works very well. On another night, Charlie is out there knitting, and I beat him up [to the point where he winds up in] a neck brace. It's just too good to be true.

TV Guide: Are you coming back for another episode?
Tyler:
I would love to. Eddie Gorodetsky is my friend and one of the writers. I did a voice-over in 2003 for something, so this is taking that one step further.

TV Guide: What kind of neighbor are you in real life?
Tyler:
I'd go jogging by your house and never speak. I am just too busy. On the one hand it forces me, along with my therapist, to think about the fact that I wish I was [someone] who could stop [long enough to] change a lightbulb. But I love working.

TV Guide: How did you and Charlie get along?
Tyler:
He is a very funny guy. We had a blast. I asked him a couple of questions about his ex-wife [Denise Richards], and he promptly introduced me to his new girlfriend [actress/real-estate agent Brooke Mueller]. It was like a family. When we were doing the jokes, the writing was so good that when we were done with the skit, people were breaking up all over the place, dropping and dying. I had such a good time, it made me think of changing careers. When I go on the set with [film-star daughter Liv Tyler], I say, "How did you memorize all that? You said your lines were just typed out, and in five minutes you knew them. How did you do it?" Me, I took it step by step. I wasn't very good. But I did it.

Sheen's New Neighbor Rocks

TV.com, CA
September 21, 2006

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler washes ashore as Charlie Sheen's next-door neighbor in Two and a Half Men.

If Charlie Sheen's new neighbor asks to borrow some white stuff, let's hope he means a cup of sugar.

Aerosmith rocker Steve Tyler is guest-starring as himself on next week's episode of CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men. The rocker moves in next-door to Sheen's character, Charlie Harper, and wreaks predictable havoc.

Tyler is currently touring with his band Aerosmith. The veteran Beantown rock band is on the road with '80s wild boys Motley Crue in what the two bands are calling "The Route of All Evil."

Both Tyler and Sheen have had difficulties with drug addiction in the past. Tyler developed a massive cocaine addiction which almost led to the demise of Aerosmith in the late '70s. In the '90s, Sheen also developed a cocaine problem, as well as a highly-publicized predilection for Hollywood hookers.

This week, Tyler unveiled the first motorcycle under his Steven Tyler Signature Series. Designed by Tyler himself, the 10 limited editon bikes cost $80,000 each.

Aerosmith's Steven Has Gone Fishing

DotMusic.com
September 20, 2006

Steven Tyler may be one of America's greatest rock legends as the lead singer of Aerosmith, but instead of teaching his grandson how to rock out, he says he's more likely to teach him how to fish.

Talking about his daughter Liv Tyler's two-and-a-half-year-old son Milo, whose dad is Spacehog singer Royston Langdon, Steven says: "He's just the cutest little thing.

"I'm gonna teach him how to fish if I can get to him before Royston does.

"He'll teach him how to golf, I'll teach him how to fish."

While that doesn't sound very rock'n'roll, Steven isn't hanging up his microphone just yet.

He is currently in the midst of what he describes as an "outrageous" US tour with fellow rock-heavyweights, Motley Crue.

Commenting on his lithe physique, the 58-year-old says: "I hit the gym and I give two hours of my all on stage every night. I lose a pound a night."

Aerosmith's next release will be a greatest hits album before Steven strikes out with a new solo project.

Steven Talks About Motorcycles

Contactmusic.com, UK
September 19, 2006

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has designed his first Harley Davidson motorbike... Tyler says, "I love to ride. I love the freedom to have the wind blow through my hair, and I love the vibrations! They go into my backbone and remind me of being on stage.

"Growing up in Yonkers, New York, I went to hardware stores and admired minibikes. When I discovered big bikes and found that they had a motor and you didn't have to pedal, I was hooked."

Comments From Steven

Rolling Stone
September 19, 2006

...Last night during the Hard Rock Café’s 35th birthday extravaganza... Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler... told us he’s finally going to release his own solo album sometime after the next Aerosmith record comes out.

"We got a greatest hits album coming out and one more for Sony and after that I’m doing a solo project. All I can say is look out," the rocker warned. Tyler was feeling so chipper, he even joked that since Motley Crue and Aerosmith are enjoying the "Route of All Evil'" tour so much, the two bands might just decide to record an album together...

Steven Tyler Performs 'Helter Skelter' With Motley Crue: Video Available

Blabbermouth.net, NY
September 19, 2006

Motley Crue performed last night (Monday, September 18) at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City as part of the restaurant chain's Ambassadors Of Rock promotion. The band, who were joined on stage by Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler for their rendition of The Beatles classic "Helter Skelter", also donated memorabilia from their recent tours to the Hard Rock's collection, including guitars and a full drum kit. Proceeds from the invitation-only event, which was hosted by comedian and "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Jim Breuer, will go to the Chris Farley Foundation. The organization was founded by the family of the late actor and "Saturday Night Live" castmember Chris Farley to help young people avoid substance abuse. Other attendees at the event included Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Matt Sorum (Velvet Revolver, ex-Guns N' Roses), and Evan Seinfeld (Biohazard).

Check out pictures from last night's event from Wire Image, Getty Images. A short video clip of Tyler performing "Helter Skelter" with Motley Crue can be found at YouTube.com.

In conjunction with the event, a guitar autographed by the members of Motley Crue last night was auctioned at HardRock.com, and the money raised will go to the Chris Farley Foundation.

Motley Crue and Aerosmith resume their tour tonight (Tuesday, September 19) at the Nikon At Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, New York.

News From The Road

The Needle and the Damage Done!

I have no idea why Elmo was at the Hartford show! Photo Credit-Frank Zamboni

Hey everybody! It’s been a while since I checked in but I see Joey is picking up some of the slack for me. He now keeps a diary online kinda like Ross Halfin but he only concentrates on reviewing the show from his point of view. He seems really excited about it and loves getting feedback.

Welcome to Pittsburgh Photo Credit-John Bionelli

The shows have been going really well. The set because of either the weather or building curfews has been clocking in at around 80 minutes. Even though it is a more compact set it’s great to be able to get out there and play some of these cool outdoor venues. Back in March if you told me the guys would be back on the road by the end of the year I would have thought you were crazy. "Dream On" was dropped for a few nights, which ruffled the feathers of a few die-hard fans, some of which were not out in freezing rain at Darien Lake but monitoring the set list from their toasty warm home computers. I can’t figure that one out.

Motley Crue has tons more pyro than KISS did. But unlike KISS they leave a majority of it on the stage after they finish which takes a little extra time to clean up. But you can see both Crews are kicking it up a notch to make the change over a little quicker and should have Aerosmith on the stage within a half hour. You guys would be amazed if you saw how much work goes into getting a show like this on. That’s why it may be better to sit back and relax between sets and pay no attention to the men behind the curtain.

The guys rehearsed in beautiful Columbus, Ohio, for 6 days before the first show. I have unofficially named Worcester, Mass, Columbus's sister city!

Happy Birthday Joe! Photo Credit-John BionelliPhotobucket - Video and Image Hosting

After the Pittsburgh show Joe and family stayed behind and spent his birthday going to see Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. All of these guys are approaching 60 but that didn’t stop them from putting on an amazing show. Before hand Joe and his family spent some time with Neil Young on his tour bus. This tour bus is the most incredible thing I have ever seen. They have to do some kind of show on it and may have already. It’s very classy old west looking with 2 Studebakers on top of it and fine wooden sculptured benches throughout the inside. The bunks are on the bottom of the bus 4 inches from the ground to make the ride as smooth as can be. I am kicking myself for not taking a picture of it while we were on it. Maybe someone out there has a picture of it and can put it up. Joe spent some time with each of the guys and even did a little interview backstage with a camera crew that was following them around. Stephen Stills even wished Joe Happy Birthday from the stage, which I thought was a classy thing to do.

After the show it was on to Niagara Falls, Canada. The Perry’s decided to skip downtown Buffalo. (Think Springfield, Mass, with chicken wings). On Monday they spent the afternoon on a Whirlpool Jet boat on Niagara Gorge. If you ever spend some time in Niagara Falls in either New York or the Canadian side be sure to check this out. It was a blast. A powerful Jet Boat speeds upriver, making it’s way into the breathtaking stonewalled canyon that is the Niagara Gorge. The anticipation builds as the boat splashes into the whitewater of Devil’s Hole rapids. After that it was on to the Hard Rock Café for a little dinner set up by Fifty Dollar Don Bernstein. The staff was great and hopefully we will be seeing some of them in Toronto next month. All Friendly!

The Darien Lake show was pretty wild. The weather was awful but the people are pretty used to it and stayed to the bitter and I mean bitter end. After the show it was off to New York City where all the guys except for Joey are based.

Joe visits Jeff Beck after his show in Atlantic City PhotoCredit-John Bionelli
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Joey heads back to Boston on the off days. He went to see Jeff Beck and Santana on Friday night at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, Ma., While Joe took a two and a half hour ride on Saturday to Atlantic City to see JB at the House of Blues. What a show - Jimmy Page once told Joe that there is everybody else and then there is Jeff Beck and he wasn’t kidding. It is one thing to hear this guy on records but seeing him do things live makes you want to shake your head and say that what he just did is impossible. Again Joe got props from the stage and went back after the show and spent some time with his idol.

Steven has been seen bopping around the city. This is definitely his town and he enjoys every minute of it. One minute he will be around Central Park and then the next minute spending time with Liv down in SoHo. He comes (even more) alive here and it should be evident on stage at Jones Beach.

As of this writing the guys plan on doing a piece for Access Hollywood and Joe and Steven are going to be interviewed by a film crew for Led Zep being inducted into the UK Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Next time I will give you the lowdown on the NYC show and the Hard Rock Party.

Next stop Brad’s home away from home Charlotte!

Stay Classy!

See you on the Road!

John B.

From The Best Seat In The House

PNC Bank Arts Center, NJ - 9.14.2006

The show last night was really good. It feels like the band is beginning to get our stride. The songs were tight, the pace of the show was tighter, and the show is turning into a SHOW. Everyone was on their game. We added Big Ten Inch and Dream On. Everyone said they missed Dream On, so we put it back in the set.

It was really hot on stage and I was having fun with Tommy Lee sitting behind me last night. I had fun watching him, and he had fun watching me. All in all it was a great show and the crowd was excellent.

See you at Jones Beach

Aerosmith, Motley Crue stay clean for tour

United Press International
September 15, 2006

Boston -- Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry considers Motley Crue to be an exciting U.S. touring partner for three months.

The two bands, who began their joint tour on September 5, both established reputations for multi-platinum selling hard rock and heavy duty rock 'n' roll debauchery.

Each has captured its turbulent past in books -- Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" and Motley Crue's "The Dirt," which is being developed into a feature film.

But Perry assures fans that these days "they can count on seeing the bands play, not fall off the stage. It's kind of cool that we've gone through all that and got all this under our belts, and the fans are gonna get the benefit of ... the good times we're enjoying now."

The Aerosmith/Motley Crue tour winds up November 24 in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Aerosmith -- whose bassist, Tom Hamilton, is sitting out the early weeks of the tour due to throat cancer treatments -- has two new songs and a greatest hits album called "Devil's Got a New Disguise," which comes out in October.

Aerosmith: New Single Available For Streaming

Blabbermouth.net, NY
September 14, 2006

Aerosmith's new single, "Devil's Got a New Disguise", has been made available for streaming at the web site of the London, Ontario, radio station 103.9 The Hawk. The song is one of two new tracks on Aerosmith's upcoming best-of collection of the same name, due on October 10 via Columbia. Perry described the song as "a classic Aerosmith rocker," while the other fresh track, "Sedona Sunrise", has been around for awhile and was considered for other Aerosmith albums. "We felt like it really had to come out," Perry told Billboard.com.

The rest of the set will be a "pared down" single-disc version of 2002's two-CD set, "O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits", containing single mixes of 14 favorites from the band's tenures with both Columbia and Geffen....

From Ross Halfin's Diary

RossHalfin.co.uk

September 13

"...I went out to dinner with $50 Don Bernsteine - my friends Wilf Wright and Jimmy Page came along. Don suggested to Jimmy doing a Led Zeppelin museum and charging to get in. Tact is probably not Don's forte - Jimmy was politely horrified.

Don's invited me to the Hard Rock in NY on Monday night. Motley Crue are playing and Steven Tyler is rumoured to be singing with them on some of the hits. Don wondered if I'd like to invite Pete or Roger from The Who. Matt Sorum and the other guitarist from Velvet Revolver will be there (Dave Kushner). I can't wait to tell Pete and Roger, straight from Madison Square Garden to hang out with Vince, Nikki, Tom and Steven (kickin' ass in Times Square)..."

Not ready for AARP

Asbury Park Press, NJ
September 14, 2006

The guys in Aerosmith aren't the stay-at-home types

Vacations are few and far between for Aerosmith. Formed 35 years ago in Boston, the veteran arena-rock band takes little downtime. Aerosmith just won't take a break — even though bass guitarist Tom Hamilton recently completed a seven-week course of radiation treatment for throat cancer.

"He's feeling better," guitarist Joe Perry said. "I just talked to him the other day. We can't wait for him to get back."

Hamilton is slated to rejoin Aerosmith in mid-October for the band's current Route of All Evil tour, which makes a stop tonight at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. David Hull, who played in the Joe Perry Project during the early '80s, is filling the void in the interim.

"I've known David since 1970," Perry said while calling from his Boston home. "He's a great guy. Tom picked him since he's the bass player. He'll do a great job."

By the time Hamilton returns, the band will be touring behind yet another greatest-hits disc, "Devil's Got a New Disguise," scheduled to drop in October. In addition to 16 hits, the CD will feature two new songs.

Originally, the band members wanted the record to be composed entirely of new songs.

"We wanted to do a new studio record," Perry said. "But it just didn't work out. We didn't have the time to do it. Steven (Tyler) had surgery on his (right) foot, which he injured in a motorcycle accident 15 years ago. He tore off his heel. After dancing on it all these years, it led to hip and knee problems. He had to take care of it. Then Tom had to take a break. But we'll get back in the studio soon and record an album in 2007."

In the meantime, Aerosmith will continue to tour, as it does each and every year.

"We love going out on the road," Perry said. "Otherwise, we could easily stay home. But we have too much fun when we perform. The fans are always very enthusiastic. There's never a dull moment for us. We find ways to keep it very interesting when we play live."

During the band's 2005 jaunt, Aerosmith surprised some fans by delivering some deep album cuts, such as "Rats in the Cellar," "S.O.S." and "Chip Away the Stone."

"We hadn't played some of those songs in a while," Perry said. "It was fun for us and the response from the fans was just tremendous. They were totally into it. The old songs are favorites We'll continue to play the old songs."

Few would have guessed that Aerosmith would still be around when the band wrote its Jimmy Carter-era classics. The group had survived years of debauchery as well as Perry's brief departure from the band during the early '80s.

"When we were growing up, few bands had members over 30 in the band," Perry said. "People died or the band broke up. People in bands much younger than us come up to us and tell us how cool it is that we're together. I don't know if it has anything to do with them liking our music or the fact that we have proved that bands can keep it together at this age. I'm still having a great time. You look at the Stones. They're about seven years older than us and they're still doing it. Then there are the guys in Zeppelin (Robert Plant and Jimmy Page) and they're still playing arenas. It's all right to be this old making music."

Perry, who turned 56 on Sunday, expects his band to be making music for many years to come.

"There's no reason to stop now," Perry said. "I think we're coming up with some great songs. We're really clicking as a band and we're having more fun now than I can remember. When you're around this long I think that you tend to appreciate it. I appreciate the songs, what we do together and the fans. This has been a great experience and none of us want it to stop anytime soon."

Eight new songs have been penned for the next Aerosmith disc.

"They're typical Aerosmith," Perry said. "None of the songs sound the same. Wait till you hear them."

Perry said he is looking forward to sharing the stage with tour headliners Motley Crue.

"They're a fun band that came up 15 years after we did and like us, they're still at it," Perry said. "It's cool when bands can keep it together as long as we and Motley Crue have."

Aerosmith lives up to legend

Buffalo News, NY
September 13, 2006

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler, left, and guitarist Joe Perry show they've lost none of their swagger Tuesday at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center.
(Robert Kirkham/Buffalo News)

It has been suggested that Aerosmith is America's Rolling Stones, that there is no finer rock 'n' roll band in this country. Tuesday at Darien Lake, the boys from Boston made it clear that this is no mere hyperbole, no fan-based inflation of the facts, no mere nonsense.

Aerosmith - even without original bassist Tom Hamilton, who took a break from the road recently following chemotherapy treatment for throat cancer - knows no peer in American hard rock. This band is indeed a living legend.

Emerging from Massachusetts in the early '70s as a ragamuffin blend of the Yardbirds, Beatles, Stones and the Jeff Beck group, Aerosmith wasted no time making a completely brilliant r&b/funk/rock record in the form of a self-titled debut. In fact, that record had "Dream On" on it, though that wouldn't become a hit for a few years following the first album's release.

Whatever. Aerosmith was not sitting around waiting, instead taking to the road with every band you can imagine - an early '70s show at Kleinhans with Mott the Hoople and the New York Dolls is the stuff of legend in our neck of the woods - and laying its claim to a sultry blend of Beatles, Beck and James Brown along the way.

Every time the band comes to town, it's a serious party, and Tuesday night - despite pouring rain and an insulting temperature - was far from an exception. Hamilton may be sitting it out for a while, and singer Steven Tyler may be fresh back from a throat operation, but you'd never know it from the way the band played.

Opening with a torrid "Toys in the Attic," and heading straight into a killer spread of tunes from the early days, including "Mama Kin" and "S.O.S. (Too Bad)," the band locked into a groove straight away, and new bassist David Hull can take some of the credit for that.

Tyler, Hull, Perry, drummer Joey Kramer and guitarist Brad Whitford tore through a set that was heavy on the hits, but held no shortage of surprises. "Cryin' " represented the late '80s rebirth of the band in their clean-and-sober guise, and found Tyler kicking it hard and old-school blues-style at the front of the ramp extending 70 feet or so from the front of the band's stage.

He sounded a bit hoarse, but no matter. From the beginning, Tyler has been one of the greats, a singer of supreme versatility, soulfulness and chops. Tuesday, he seemed a bit tired, but he gave it all up, making it quite apparent that few can touch him in the rock frontman front.

Perry was in incredible form throughout, busting out incredible solos on a gorgeous selection of guitars that would make any collector drool. Perry was on fire, looking incredibly fit and tearing up the stage, particularly during the extended slide solo that elevated "Draw the Line."

Whitford took fewer solos, but was his usual flawless self. And Kramer? If you've ever played in a band, you know how essential a rock-solid drummer is. Kramer is that, to the 10th power. And Aerosmith can add another nearly perfect show to its scrapbook.

Motley Crue opened the set - a bit of a mismatch. This band emerged from the Hollywood-based, Whiskey-A-Go-Go '80s hair-metal craze, when every band in that town was trying to be Van Halen. Motley Crue failed, though it did make two great albums, and a few good tunes thereafter. Despite a killer stage show, strong performances from drummer Tommy Lee, bassist/songwriter Nikki Sixx and guitarist Mick Mars, the band's set was derailed by the scattershot performance of vocalist Vince Neil. We heard the hits and we saw the thrilling show, but something was missing. Perhaps it was the heart and soul of a band that deserved to mark another decade together.

Aerosmith shows Motley Crue how it should be done

Pittsburgh Post Gazette, PA
September 11, 2006

So Motley Crue and Aerosmith co-headline the Route of All Evil Tour? Not if the Post-Gazette Pavilion show Saturday night is any indication. While both bands rocked the responsive, hard-drinking crowd with flashy, hit-filled sets, the Crue show played like a cartoon compared with Aerosmith's live-action spectacular.

Motley Crue spared few cliches in delivering visual glitz. Showers of sparks and flames punctuated nearly every song. Voluptuous women cavorted onstage. Video screens flashed sinister images of fire, devils, upside-down crucifixes and women in bondage poses. Ideas about voodoo ran through many of the sights on stage, but the theme was never significantly explored.

Musically, singer Vince Neil announced the band's intent early on: "Let's play these [expletive] hits!" The Crue flashed their knack for writing hooks on tunes like "Dr. Feelgood," "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" and their hit power ballad "Home Sweet Home." But so much of the group's material wallowed in the obvious ("Girls, Girls, Girls") or aped what others have said better. "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" poorly echoed Aerosmith's "Same Old Song and Dance," particularly in the context of this show. A cover of the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" contained shockingly little bass-playing muscle from Nikki Sixx and lacked any real menace.

Even Sixx's smashing of a cheap Fender Squire bass at the conclusion of the finale "Kickstart My Heart" fizzled. The guitar's body had only developed a crack after about six whacks, and the neck held tight. A piece of wood finally split anticlimactically from the body.

Aerosmith didn't go for such obvious spectacle. The focus of their stage design was far simpler -- a long ramp that allowed singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry to venture far out into the crowd, captured on a giant video screen. But the band filled the space with presence, Perry playing the serious, swaggering six-string hero to Tyler's loose-limbed, fast-talking frontman.

While Motley Crue won the battle for loudest volume, Aerosmith sounded better. The opener, "Toys In The Attic," came on lean and tough, with both Perry and Brad Whitford's intertwining guitar work clearly audible. From there, the sounds ranged from the jangly power pop of "Jaded" to the frenetic, dynamic blues of "Baby, Please Don't Go" to the deep, '70s-defining groove of "Sweet Emotion." Even "Cryin'," basically a lightweight hit from the band's video heyday, had real soul to it, sounding like some great lost gem from the '50s or '60s.

Band members' recent health issues had little impact. Tyler has clearly returned from throat surgery in full, fine voice, and both Tyler and Perry dedicated songs to absent bassist Tom Hamilton, who is being treated for throat cancer. David Hull filled in admirably, though, nailing all the riffs and even adding backing vocals.

Aerosmith played a mere 70 minutes before returning for encores, but it took only about a minute to establish their mastery over their tourmates.

Aerosmith, Crüe Rock The Dodge

Hartford Courant, CT
September 9, 2006

You Want Every Song? Dream On

After a raucous 15-song set that condensed the band's various greatest-hits albums, Aerosmith left the Dodge Music Center Thursday without playing the signature power ballad "Dream On."

After an encore of "Love in an Elevator" and "Walk this Way," Steven Tyler thanked the crowd, credited the band members (minus bassist and cancer recovery patient Tom Hamilton) and wished everybody a safe evening. The people stood still for a second, figuring a second encore was imminent, until the house lights came up.

Yet that one little ditty may have been the only thing Aerosmith didn't bring on the "Route of All Evil" tour it is headlining with Mötley Crüe.

After the reunited Crüe knocked out its 13-song set, Aerosmith reconstructed the stage to fit its own royal needs, a project that took the road crew more than 30 minutes to complete.

The stage was reconfigured into three levels with a drive-in movie theater-size video screen of the band performing in real time. And, because apparently no regular-size stage can contain Steven Tyler and company, a walkway and platform extension stretched 15 rows into the audience.

Early rocking favorite "Toys in the Attic" opened the show, and the band kept up the hard-driving pace through the first half of the show all the way through the band's stylish version of Muddy Waters' "Baby Please Don't Go." Then Tyler handed the microphone to guitarist Joe Perry, who led an outstanding cover of Gary Moore's "Stop Messin' Around."

Shortly after that, Tyler stood on the platform in the middle of the crowd, and started an a cappella version of "What It Takes." The band didn't break in until after the first verse, but by that time the sold-out crowd had taken over. Then "Sweet Emotion" tore the place down.

Crüe was on top of its game, too. From "Dr. Feelgood" to "Kickstart My Heart," the center was taken back to the band's heyday.

TV star (and drummer) Tommy Lee may have had the best quote of the night while trolling for applause when he said, "Don't make me tell Pittsburgh tomorrow night that Hartford was ..."

He paused to find the right word: "Iffy."

So I'm now off to New York next week to shoot Aerosmith and the Who for Mojo... and Def Leppard are playing next Friday so I may go and see them. I haven't been to NY since this time last year..."

The Way Joey Kramer Sees It

Aero Force One
September 8, 2006

From The Best Seat In The House

Hartford, CT - 9.7.2006

"I thought that for the second show of the tour it was pretty damn good. There were a couple of little mistakes that went down but over all I thought the band played well. Steven was in good voice. The beginning of the show when Joe went flying down the ramp. Woah. I thought Steven did an excellent job on Seasons of Wither, in fact the audience was mesmerized. Looking out at 30,000 people back to the edges of the lawn Steven had the audience mesmerized during Seasons. During what it takes, the whole audience was swaying from 1989 to 2006, again Steven was in great voice, he sang that song great tonight. Sweet E with Joe with the laser light was like a wizard conjuring up the laser spirits. Brad was his usual bad self one of my favorite guitar players of all time. During Draw The line Joe Perry did everything on stage but pull furniture out of his ass. The boy is hot shit. If had got any hotter we would have had a real problem with the fire marshal. Missing Tom, but David Hull is doing us proud. And as we closed the show with Walk This Way, I was sorry to see it end. See you in Pittsburgh. That’s my story, I’m sticking to it. What do you have to say??

I disagree with anyone who is saying there are too many slow songs in the set. A great song is a great song. It’s a very difficult thing to try and please everyone all the time and we do the best we can to put a good show together to make everyone happy. People who complain can direct their comments now on directly to me and I can take them into consideration. And believe me, they will be read. Send them to me:   Joey@aeroforceone.com."

Joe Perry Interview

NorthJersey.com, NJ
September 8, 2006

The veteran rock band Aerosmith rarely takes a break -- and it hasn't made an exception for the illness of bassist Tom Hamilton, who recently completed a seven-week course of radiation treatment for throat cancer.

"He's feeling better," guitarist Joe Perry said. "I just talked to him the other day. We can't wait for him to get back."

Hamilton is slated to rejoin Aerosmith in mid-October, about a quarter of the way through its Route of All Evil tour, which stops Thursday at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel and the following week at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, N.Y. David Hull, who played in the Joe Perry Project in the early '80s, will fill the void in the interim.

After 35 years together, how will it be to have a non-original member perform with the group?

"I've known David since 1970," Perry said by phone from his Boston home. "He's a great guy. Tom picked him. He'll do a great job."

The band's next album, yet another greatest hits compilation, is due in October. The band had hoped to fill the album with new songs, but only two of the 16 tracks on "Devil's Got a New Disguise" are new.

"It just didn't work out. We didn't have the time to do it," Perry said. "Steven [singer Steven Tyler] had surgery on his foot, which he injured in a motorcycle accident 15 years ago. He tore off his heel. After dancing on it all these years, it led to hip and knee problems. He had to take care of it. Then Tom had to take a break. But we'll get back in the studio soon and record an album in 2007."

During the band's 2005 tour, Aerosmith surprised some fans with lesser-known and older songs such as "Rats in the Cellar," "SOS" and "Chip Away the Stone."

"We hadn't played some of those songs in a while," Perry said. "It was fun for us, and the response from the fans was just tremendous. They were totally into it."

Few would have guessed that Aerosmith would still be around when the band wrote its Jimmy Carter-era classics. The group has survived years of debauchery and Perry's brief departure from the band during the early '80s.

"When we were growing up, few bands had members over 30. People died or the band broke up," Perry said. "People in bands much younger than us come up to us and tell us how cool it is that we're together. I don't know if it has anything to do with them liking our music or the fact that we have proved that bands can keep it together at this age."

Perry, who turns 56 on Sunday, expects Aerosmith to make music together for years.

"I'm still having a great time. You look at the Stones. They're about seven years older than us, and they're still doing it," Perry said. "There's no reason to stop now. We're really clicking as a band, and we're having more fun now than I can remember."

Music Preview: Aerosmith avoids evil as it starts tour

Pittsburgh Post Gazette, PA
September 8, 2006

The day after the opening night of the Route of All Evil Tour with Motley Crue, Joe Perry sounds exactly like a rock star who played the night before.

Asked how the tour kickoff in Columbus was, the Aerosmith guitarist says in a sleepy voice, "It was, uh ... [long pause] ... good."

That's not real convincing.

"The first couple of shows are always odd," he says, perking up, "because you're off the road for six or seven months. With a new show, it seems like it takes a while 'cause we changed some crew people. Last night was surprisingly good -- it went far better than I expected."

The review in the Columbus Dispatch of Wednesday's show reported that the Aerosmith set went off without a hitch, with Perry stealing the show. Motley Crue -- while entertaining and all, especially Tommy Lee -- had a few Spinal Tap moments, including Nikki Sixx getting his moonboot stuck and falling, and singer Vince Neil hassling with the roadies.

This is the first time these hard-rock titans -- who stop in Pittsburgh tomorrow night -- from two different decades have toured together.

Although Aerosmith may be the older band, they actually have the edge, not only because of their superior catalog but because the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers from Boston are so much more road-hardened.

Both, though, have their health issues. Motley Crue guitarist Mick Mars is frail from a degenerative bone disease. Aerosmith, having survived a health scare with singer Steven Tyler earlier in the year, is without bassist Tom Hamilton, who was recently treated for throat cancer. David Hull of the Joe Perry Project is taking his place, at least until some time in October.

"I think the whole dynamic of how we do everything is different," Perry says. "It was a five-man metaphysical balance of energies, and Tom was a big part of it. It's a big machine and it kind of carries itself on its own weight, but I don't think we can miss him for too long without it really changing the thing. He's kind of the anchor that keeps me and Steven from flying off. There's a reason he's a bass player, you know what I mean?"

Aerosmith comes to this tour still in the process of working on the follow-up to 2004's blues-soaked "Honkin' On Bobo." Perry says of the new project, "When this greatest hits record comes out [in October], a couple songs on there will give you an idea what the rest of the record will sound like. It's just kind of rock 'n' roll. It's just trying to retain the rock 'n' roll flavor with some new pop sensibilities."

Does that mean the possibility of more Diane Warren songs?

"There might be some on the new studio album," he says. "We don't care where they come from, as long as they're great."

Notes and Analysis:

: Same set as Columbus, minus Mama Kin and Dream On. Due to curfew
overextension, band needed to ax 2 songs.
: Band on at 10:10, off right at 11:30pm.
: During Seasons, as Joe and Steven were sitting at the end of the catwalk...a   simulated "snow" fell lightly from the ceiling. This added a very nice aura to the   song.
: Joe used the Theramin center stage tonight, very much like Jimmy Page. Green   laser triangles abound!
: Hells Angel's all over!
: Steven and band sounded real tight...no performance issues.
: Big thanks to Tony for the report!!

Aerosmith: The First and a First

Aero Force One
September 6, 2006

Premiere Radio Networks reports on opening night of the tour:

Aerosmith opened their "Route of All Evil" tour with Motley Crue last night in Columbus, Ohio. It marked Steven Tyler's first Aerosmith show since undergoing throat surgery last spring, and it was the first-ever Aerosmith show without bassist Tom Hamilton, who has been undergoing treatment for throat cancer. Aerosmith turned in a 17-song set, playing mostly hits with a few they haven't done in a while, including "Eat the Rich," which they haven't played since 2004, and "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," which they've only done a few times on their past few tours. The sweet surprise of the night was an acoustic version of "Seasons of Wither" with Tyler and Joe Perry sitting on stools. The band dedicated "Stop Messin' Around," which Perry sings, and "Sweet Emotion" to Hamilton. While Steven Tyler was in fine voice, he was limping a bit during the show as he continues to recover from ankle surgery he underwent a few months ago.

Fans writing on the Aerosmith and Motley Crue forums said the Crue put on a better stage as they delivered their patented over-the-top pyro filled show. But musically, Aerosmith got the opening night nod.

As for Tom Hamilton, he writes on the band's fan site [AeroForceOne.com], "I had radiation five days a week and chemo one day a week [for seven weeks]. The first two weeks were a piece of cake but the rest has been a piece of something else. I'm just getting to the point where the side effects of the treatment are getting better but I still have a way to go just like the doctors predicted in the beginning. I'll be getting out there as soon as possible believe me. It feels really weird not being there. As a matter of fact, this is going to ruin my perfect attendance record." Filling in for Hamilton through mid-October is David Hull, who used to be in the Joe Perry Project. Aerosmith and Motley Crue are in Hartford, Connecticut, tomorrow night.

Veterans Aerosmith, Motley Crue frolick in rock-star excess

Columbus Dispatch, OH
September 6, 2006

Tommy Lee and Joe Perry always have stood out in bands with no shortage of colorful personas.

Based on their performances and presences last night in Germain Amphitheater, the 43-year-old Motley Crue drummer and 55-year-old Aerosmith guitarist now are their long-lived group's stars.

On opening night of the hard-rock acts' 33-city "Route of All Evil" tour, Lee — a shirtless, illustrated man in command via headset microphone — and Perry — bare-chested and in full-on guitar-god mode on stage and on the 70-foot catwalk into the lower pavilion — provided many boosts during 150 minutes of hits.

Each band, which was coming off lengthy breaks from the road, played 75 or so minutes and neither played new songs. Aerosmith fired on all cylinders, delivering reinvigorated '70s chestnuts (Sweet Emotion; Draw the Line; Mama Kin; Walk This Way; Dream On) and enlivened its post-drugs and drink/MTV-friendly fare (Rag Doll; Cryin'; F.I.N.E.).

Motley Crue culled from its '80s heyday (Too Fast For Love; Live Wire; Shout at the Devil; Kickstart My Heart) and latter-day catalog (Primal Scream and Sick Love Song). Along the way the quartet shook loose first-night cobwebs.

For Motley Crue, the "Evil" trek is scaled-back production from its blockbuster Carnival of Sins tour, which last brought the band to central Ohio in March 2005.

Yes, last night there was a mock slaughter of a rooster by writhing lasses wearing strategically-placed white cloth. Yes, there were flaming wrought-iron bird cages — abeit underused flaming wrought-iron bird cages. Yes, during Girls, Girls, Girls Vince Neil rode a chopper on stage.

But did Lee and his drum set top previous tours' drum set tricks?

No matter. No one in rock these days seems to have more fun than Lee, part-time star reality-TV hero (Rockstar: Supernova) and in-demand chat-show guest (Friday on Live With Regis & Kelly and Tuesday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show ), and his energy infected the audience.

As columns of fire shot toward the rafters and sparks rained down on wrought-iron set straight out of a Victorian horror story, Lee was an impeccable timekeeper and simply ferocious behind a set of drums atop of pedestal of fake bones and skulls. His greatest contribution, however, was imploring the audience to "go (expletive) crazy, you (expletives)!" until smile after smile stretched across his face.

He most likely had more fun than 45-year-old singer Neil. When Neil wasn't singing pieces of syllables from lyrics in a dry, nasal yelp, he was gesturing and shooting exasperated looks at roadies for various untold reasons.

He probably even had a laugh at bassist Nikki Sixx's expense when the 47-year-old post-apocalyptic biker character caught his moon boot on something on the stage, slipped and performed an involuntary and perfect backward summersault, recovered and then smashed his guitar to conclude Kickstart My Heart.

Lee — heck, most in attendance — surely had more fun than guitarist Mick Mars, whose every move requires much concentration. Mars, 55, takes his sir name from the Roman god of war but some day mortals will know him as the Hoosier-born god of rock-star longevity.

A long-time sufferer of a degenerative bone disease , the skeletal Mars moved like a 98-pound scarecrow. The guitar in Mars' hands seemed to be attached to his belt as he stiffly cranked out the familiar riffs.

As for Steven Tyler, still the main face of Aerosmith, he sounded strong all night even if his pants these days might do well with some pleats. The 58-year-old, whose throat ailment derailed his band's tour in February, was his former self, though, scatting his banshee scat, blowing a bit of harmonica and, in general, singing with force and projection.

Still, it was Perry, channeling Jimmy Page, Keith Richards and Peter Green (literally when he sang and played Fleetwood Mac's Stop Messin' Around) between multiple wardrobe and six-string changes, who commanded the most attention.

The guitarist, dedicating Stop Messin' Around to bassist Tom Hamilton, who is recovering from throat cancer treatment, raced all night about a stage accentuated with the occasional laser light show. Perry was all over the place, shoulder-length locks blowing in the wind, his head toward heaven and eyes closed during many a Les Paul solo.

During Sweet Emotion the guy even managed a Theremin solo. Talk about fun, a Theremin manipulated by a shirtless dude in leather pants center stage, a fellow born in 1950? That's some top-drawer Tuesday-night fun.

New Message From Tom Hamilton

Aero Force One
September 5, 2006

Hi You Guys,

I think You've all probably heard that I'll be missing the first month or so of the tour.

Last spring I was diagnosed with throat cancer and told I would have to go through seven weeks of radiation and chemo. The doctors asked me what my schedule would be and when I told them I was going out on tour in September they all looked at each other with their eyebrows down. They told me I wouldn't be ready by that time. The tour had been in the planning stages for far too long to postpone so I realized I would miss at least the beginning of it. They explained my treatment and what I had to deal with and I realized that there would be no decisions to agonize about. At least that was easy. The only things I agonize about in life are decisions. In this case there were none to make.

So that became my summer project. I had radiation five days a week and chemo one day a week. The first two weeks were a piece of cake but the rest has been a piece of something else. I'll tell you about it someday.

I'm just getting to the point where the side effects of the treatment are getting better but I still have a way to go just like the doctors predicted in the beginning.

I'll be getting out there as soon as possible believe me. Tonight is the first gig and it feels really weird not being there. As a matter of fact this is going to ruin my perfect attendance record.

A good friend of ours, David Hull is going to fill in for me 'til i get back. He's a killer musician and a guy we've known since the 1325 days. He played with Joe during some of the Joe Perry Project days and I've had the pleasure of hangin' and jammin' with him at some charity gigs over the last few months. So treat him right!

I'll see you out there in a few weeks.

TH

America’s Greatest Rock’ N’ Roll Band--will return to the road September 5 with Motley Crue--America’s Most Notorious Rock Band--to spawn what is the ultimate must-see rock event of 2006: a massive North American tour of predominantly outdoor amphitheatres...

For the tour, Aerosmith... will thrust themselves into the middle of the audience, turning the seats along the 70-foot-long ramp into one big front row experience that will enable fans to get up close and personal with rock’s quintessential live act. Aerosmith were most recently on the road with their hugely successful and wildly acclaimed "Rockin’ The Joint" tour, which packed arenas from October '05 through February '06 in what critics called "an exultant return," "a wet, wild and totally sweat-filled night" and "a testosterone-charged set of their patented blues-soaked rock...."

Headliners: The Axeman Cometh

Columbus Alive, OH
September 1, 2006

Jimi Hendrix. Stevie Ray Vaughan. Duane Allman. There are plenty of guitar legends, but not many are still alive and touring.

Aerosmith's Joe Perry is one of the few classic rock axemen still around to tell his tales, though he endured years of hard living to get here.

On the eve of the band's tour kickoff in Columbus with co-headliners Mötley Crue, I chatted long distance with the now long-sober family man about the changing face of the music business, and how Aerosmith always seems to escape the industry's fickle, throat-cutting jaws in one piece.

Can we expect anything new from Aerosmith on this tour?

At this point, every tour is like a challenge for us, to mount it up. I never know what to expect, with the way the music business has changed. Each has its own set of problems.

We're playing with a band [Mötley Crue] that I still think of as a baby band, but they got a generation of fans turned onto rock 'n' roll through their music, they're a formidable show.

You know, we're going in with all the guns loaded. The friendly competition between the two bands means the audience gets a better show. That's why we like to do these packages with other headliners, like we did with Lenny [Kravitz] or Kiss. It gives the audience a really good night.

It costs a lot of money to put up a show like this. Tickets are expensive! We want to give fans as much value for the dollar as we can.

This tour, we're going to go out there and top what we did last time. We'll change the set around. We'll go out there and give the fans the skeleton set of the songs we know they'd be disappointed if we didn't play, but we'll also going to bring in some of the old songs.

How do you keep your finger on the pulse of what fans want?

We just listen to what everybody has to say. We're fans first. We know what we like, but we're entertainers. We've seen so many bands that will go out there and go, "We're not going to play that because it's really not our sound." And I say, "Yeah, but it was your biggest hit. Your fans want to hear it."

We come from a totally different school. We're out there because fans want to see us, and for no other reason. We listen to feedback from every resource we can. Now with the Internet, there's a pretty good cross-section of fans out there.

We did a poll last year of most requested songs. We were a little surprised by where some of the songs ended up on the most-wanted list.

Which ones surprised you?

Like, say, "Angel." It ended up not even being in the Top 30, and that really surprised us. That was a really big, big single for us. It kind of steers you in that direction again, to go back and maybe play a few songs that people want to hear from the early, early days which we just have never played live, or at least haven't in recent memory.

Columbus is your first stop on this tour, right?

Yes. We're really looking forward to coming out there. I don't know if people know it or not, but we're setting up the tour there and we'll be in town for awhile. So you may see us at the movies, you may see us out on the town!

Joe Perry Comments About Tour

Online Rock Radio, Greece
September 1, 2006

It's easy to imagine that the guys in Aerosmith and Motley Crue were excited about going out together starting next week, but there were some outside voices that helped make the package a reality. Lead guitarist Joe Perry told us that even though Aerosmith knew it was a good idea, they got confirmation based on what they heard from people around the band: "When we started talking to our surrounding friends, family, neighbors, and fans, the response coming back from it was overwhelming, so I think it's gonna be a really good bill."

The groups kick off their Route Of All Evil tour at the Germain Amphitheatre in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday (September 5th)....

A Fall Preview of Vermont Music

Vermont Guardian, VT
September 1, 2006

Music in Vermont had its share of fireworks this summer, with much of it crowded into two weeks in August. The pace looks steadier this fall, with highlights sprinkled across the state and throughout each month. Here is a sampling of what to expect in the coming months from some of Vermont’s artists, as well as some of the state’s best music venues...

When part-time Vermonter Joe Perry is not playing the odd solo gig, he has a news-making side project, Aerosmith. With Motley Crue, the Aerosmith crew plans a "Route of All Evil Tour" from Sept. 5 to Nov. 24 with several New England and New York state stops, playing at first without bassist Tom Hamilton who has been battling throat cancer. The next studio CD is running late. A "best of" collection, Devil’s Got a New Disguise, is set for an Oct. 10 release...

The Ticker

Detroit Free Press, MI
September 1, 2006

Bottom line, football business is good business. Really good business. Every NFL team increased in value over last year, according to Forbes Magazine's annual rankings...

Stargazing

...Little Steve Van Zandt -- of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and "The Sopranos" -- helped rework Hank Williams Jr.'s "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight" for ESPN's "Monday Night Football" and recorded it with a band that included Hank Jr., Little Richard, Charlie Daniels and Aerosmith's Joe Perry, to name a few...

Joe Nichols is traveling as part of Toby Keith's Hooking Up and Hanging Out tour, and that led him to hanging out with celebrities during the tour stop in Boston.

For instance, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, who made it a point to hang out with Joe Nichols August 19th in Boston while he was backstage at the Toby Keith Hooking Up and Hanging Out Tour. Tyler caught Joe's show from the side stage and then the two hung out for nearly half an hour....
