A jam-packed summer

27 of March 2009

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
March 26, 2009

Big acts hit the road, with many heading to a venue near you

“We may be down on banks, but we’re still up with music.

The summer of 2009 is shaping up as a surprisingly vibrant season for major music tours . . .

Although the extinction of amphitheaters has been rumored for years, this seems to be a year of revival for Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy. The venue, operated by Live Nation, has its usual mix of two nights of the Dave Matthews Band (July 18 and 19), and one night of Parrothead bliss with Jimmy Buffett (Aug. 29) but also the Coldplay tour (July 25) and two nights of the reunited Phish (June 20 and 21). There’s also talk that Aerosmith may be making a visit to East Troy this summer. . . ”

Little Bighorn

“Our latest project, the Little Bighorn, is the result of an amazing idea brought to us by Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Joe is the owner of a Winchester Repeating Rifle, and wanted a guitar fitting the period and style of the Old West – as if it was owned by a Native American, fighting on the fields of the Western Expanse in the late 1870’s.

This guitar is equipped with an RS Modern Upgrade Kit, RS Fralin Big Block Bridge Pickup, Lindy Fralin Blues Special Neck and Middle Pickups. It is also decked out with a Suhr Silent Backplate, and a Trem King Vibrato. The control knobs and the switch tip are fashioned from real elk horn – and the knob center feature spent Winchester 44-40 cartridges. The pickguard is crafted from sueded buckskin, and the control plate and backplate are fashioned from smoked buckskin to complete the wilderness feel. The Fralin pickup covers are made of hammered copper, along with the jack plate and truss rod cover. To tie it all together – we wrapped the headstock with genuine sinew.

We were incredibly proud that Joe chose RS to undertake this serious project. To see the Little Bighorn in greater detail, click on any of the pictures below for a high-resolution version.”

It’s been a long time since an update but I figured with most of the band members giving their own updates I would just leave it to the professionals. I was thinking the other day as I was watching the 5 different personalities come into the studio that it might be cool to let you guys in on what Magee, Jim Survis and I see everyday.

Tom Hamilton: He is usually the first one to arrive. The reason I believe for this is that he prepares for the studio like he was preparing for a test. Everything laid out and precise. He likes everything just so. He usually does his homework the night before and if he didn’t do it, he comes in early and crams before the rest of the guys come in. He is like a scientist in that way and I guess is one of the reasons his early Aerosmith nickname was “The Brain.”

Master of the Big Bottom Tom Hamilton. Photo by: John Bionelli

Joey Kramer: On December 26th 2006 I officially named Joey Kramer the hardest working man in show biz. When the band wasn’t in the studio this summer one could find “Hardworking” Joey Kramer behind his drum set before most of you had your $4.00 cup of Starbucks. Now that the guys are in the studio each day Joey is usually second to arrive behind Tom. Instead of lollygagging or eating, Joey gets into his work clothes and heads immediately behind the traps. He takes his job very seriously and you can hear it in the grooves. He is the foundation of every song. He is the hardest hitting drummer in rock today, in my mind.

“Hardworking” Joey Kramer Rides his Ride. Photo by: John Bionelli

Joe Perry: Joe or Brad come in next. Joe is still recovering from his recent knee surgery so I do my best Morgan Freeman and pick him up and drive him to the studio. Once at the studio he fixes himself in front of his Espresso maker and brews a triple Americano that would have any barrister green with envy. He then says his hellos and retreats to the studio. With java in hand he flicks off the stand by switch his amp du jour and immediately fills the studio with a sound only JFP could make. He definitely is Aerosmith’s version of Steve Austin. “Joe Perry, Guitarist. Gentlemen, we can rebuild him, We have the technology. We have the capability to build rock and rolls first bionic axeman. Joe Perry is that man. Better than before. Better, stronger, faster.” Joe will be equipped on the next tour with a Northrop HL-10.

Brad Whitford: Brad on the other hand is looser than creamed corn. He is so cool and quiet we sometimes don’t realize he is even in the studio. Brad however is in tune with everything going on around him and can usually be found with a Strat slinged around his neck in the back of the studio.

Bad Brad Lays It Down. Photo by: John Bionelli

Steven Tyler: The man with the golden voice is usually the last one to arrive. He comes in like the Tazmanian Devil all arms, legs and lips. He may have had one of the greatest lines I ever heard. One time when he was 5-10 minutes tardy to a meeting he said,” Wow, this is the earliest I have ever been late.” Much to his credit he is almost always the last to leave the studio at night.

It’s still much too early to even speculate what this album is going to sound like but I’ll tell you one thing. It will sound like 100% Aerosmith and you will like it.

The guys plan on hitting the road this summer and I am sure it’s going to be one helluva show. They are finalizing the routing and the special guests. One show is on the books for August at Sturgis. Look for tour dates to be announced here very soon.

Joe was in New York this past weekend taking part in a photo shoot for GQ magazine. He was pictured with 2 scientists. Dr. Rudy Tanzi and Dr. Francis Collins. These scientists are rock stars in their fields and GQ wanted to pair them with real rock stars. The photographer for this shoot was Ben Watts, brother of Naomi Watts. Other musicians who took part in the shoot were Sheryl Crow and Will I Am. Be on the lookout at a newsstand soon.

As luck would have it Tab the Band were in town in the Big Apple this past weekend and Joe and Billie got to see Adrian, Tony, Ben and newest member Sweet Lou Jannetty perform at Santos Party House. The club is owned by Andrew WK. AWK and Joe got to catch up on things before the show. As you all know Andrew opened for A-Smith a few years back. As of this writing TAB is scheduled to open for Modern Mouse tonight.

I have been told we may be spending a lot of time in New York in the upcoming weeks. That’s just fine with me because I love NY, too. It’s the Yankees I hate.

Big shout to Production Manager Extraordinaire Charlie Hernandez who is at home recovering from brain surgery. Rumor has it the surgery didn’t go 100% as planned as Charlie woke up believing he was a life long Red Sox fan. He was muttering Pesky held the ball and Bucky F’n Dent as he came too. He also said something about the Red Sox having won more World Series this decade than the Bronx Bombers. We are going to leave him be on this one.

Employee of the Week:

Goes to Donny Wightman! Donny as you know shines when the band goes on tour. He can be found patrolling the stage and crowd before, during and after every Aerosmith show. Although this year his Felix the Cat like reflexes may more resemble Garfield because of recent hip replacement surgery, he is still someone you want on your side when things get hairy. He also happens to be one of Ross Halfin’s favorite subjects and is quite photogenic. Women love him and men want to be him, but sorry girls he’s taken. He is a true comrade.

See you on the Road!

Hey Everyone!

We’re a go for our new album! We’re working with a producer we never worked with before, Brendan O’Brien. So far it’s going great. Everybody is pretty excited about the amount of new music and the quality of it. We’re looking forward to getting our basic tracks started in about 10 days or so. I’m really quite impressed with some of the new music we’re putting together – we’ll have a true-to-the-spirit-of Aerosmith record on our hands. Hopefully you won’t have to wait too long. We’re working hard to get it done and we’re anxious to hear people’s reaction to it.
Wishing all the best to all our fans,

BW

Asking New England blues harmonica great James Montgomery who he’s played with over a career that spans nearly 40 years is not the right question – unless, that is, you have to kill a few hours hearing the answer. The more appropriate question is, who hasn’t he played with?

…….These days, Montgomery is making a new album, tentatively titled “From Detroit to the Delta.” It features old friends such as Cotton, blues guitarist Johnny Winter, the Uptown Horns, and Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer on guitars and drums, respectively. Montgomery also stars with country legend Willie Nelson and actor Morgan Freeman in a new music documentary titled “Delta Rising……”

LOS ANGELES — If you’re sick of playing Guitar Hero with the digital Steven Tyler, perhaps it’s time to upgrade to flesh and bone.

The Aerosmith front man will be headlining a Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy camp in Hollywood beginning April 29.

Campers will rehearse daily with counselors, write and record an original song, play live at the Whisky A Go Go and record at the Capitol Records building, according to rockcamp.com.

“Steven has generously agreed to donate exclusive autographed memorabilia for our traditional closing night concert and charity auction to benefit MusiCares, which will take place at the world famous Whisky A Go Go,” said David Fishof, Producer, Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp.

In addition to Tyler, campers will be joined by Todd Rundgren (legendary songwriter, producer), Mark Farner (formerly of Grand Funk Railroad), Duff McKagan (Guns N Roses & Velvet Revolver), Steve Lukather (TOTO), Alan White (YES) and Bruce Kulick (KISS).

To register, visit http://www.rockcamp.com or call 1-888-762-2263.

Keep in mind that playing with the big boys isn’t exactly cheap. The Hollywood camp package costs $7,999 per person, with a $2,500 deposit required.

Perhaps $29.99 for that copy of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith isn’t so bad after all.

Joe Perry’s Gibson Goldtone for sale on eBay. Check it out Here!

“Genuine touring and studio combo amp from Joe Perry’s personal collection. Used in the studio for the making of the Just Push Play record and one of the amps used on the Just Push Play tour 2001. There were several of these amps used, making a wall of them in Joe’s live rig. More combos and extension cabinets will be up for auction soon. Joe is happy to sign the item if you want. Regardless, a letter of authenticity will be included in the sale, as well as a photo of Joe signing the amp if you choose to have it signed. The amp is a Gibson Goldtone GA30-RVS. It is an EL84 tubed, Class A British-made combo with great reverb. Trace Elliott was the manufacturer for Gibson. The amp was made in the late 1990’s. It’s in very good condition, a couple of small nicks in the tolex from the tour, but thats it.

I have been Joe Perry’s personal guitar tech for the last 17 years. All tours, all records. I personally cared for this amp. It sounds cool! Check out the tone on the Aerosmith ‘Rockin’ the Joint’ live CD.”

2009 will be a tremendous year for Aerosmith, as the band plans its first album of original material since 2001, which it will support with an extensive summer tour. In celebration of these events and the band’s storied accomplishments, a new 298-page book, “Aerosmith: Essential Interviews”, is set for release through Rock Reader Books/Lulu on May 17, 2009.

Collecting some of the most honest and engaging rock and roll press interactions ever put to print, “Aerosmith: Essential Interviews” is available for advance purchase and immediate delivery at this location.

Beginning with one of Aerosmith’s first extended interviews in 1973, “Aerosmith: Essential Interviews” lets “America’s greatest rock and roll band” tell its own inspirational story. Spanning the legendary hard rock quintet’s 35-plus years, the book chronicles “the bad boys from Boston” during their explosive, drug-and-sex-steered early heyday and the propulsion of mid-’70s classics “Toys In The Attic” and “Rocks”. The band’s fall from grace and initial disintegration as a result of those vices is also explored.

“Aerosmith: Essential Interviews” documents how Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford not only survived those decadent experiences, but learned from them, evolved artistically and ultimately forged one of the greatest rock comebacks ever.

Aura Nightclub hosted the hottest party in paradise Thursday night as the front man for the legendary band Aerosmith, Steven Tyler spent the night with a group of pals in the club’s round room.

The rock star soaked up the scene as he danced the night away with Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders Brooke Sorenson, Nicole Hamilton, Justine Phillips, Whitney Isleng , and cheerleading manager Rachel Durbin. It was their second night of partying in the Bahamas .

The lovely ladies kept the packed house entertained all night long as they took turns jumping in the DJ booth with Las Vegas guest DJ Tino Sanchez as he rocked the house until the early morning hours.
