Rolling Stones "highest earners" in 2006

Digital Spy, UK
July 31, 2006

The Rolling Stones have topped the list for the highest earners in live entertainment for the year to date.

The band's schedule was hampered by disruption in Europe after guitarist Keith Richards had to undergo brain surgery, but the 'Bigger Bang' tour was still the highest earning in the business.

U2 came second, but it was not a close run race. The Irish band's tour was also held back, when a family illness led to guitarist The Edge unable to attend certain dates in March.

The top ten earners are as follows:

1. The Rolling Stones - £79.7 million
2. U2 - £39.4 million
3. Bon Jovi - £35 million
4. Billy Joel - £26.3 million
5. Cirque Du Soleil'S Delirium - £21.5 million
6. Aerosmith - £19.4 million
7. Coldplay - £16.1 million
8. Luis Miguel - £13.8 million
9. Trans Siberian Orchestra - £13.3 million
10. Sir Paul McCartney - £9.7 million

Washington Post, US:

...Road veteran Aerosmith again asserted its authority this winter, grossing more than $35 million from 32 dates on a tour that was cut short because of throat problems for singer Steven Tyler. The good news is that Aerosmith will strike even harder later this year with a co-headlining run with Motley Crue called the Route of All Evil...

About The ’80s

The Canton Repository, OH
July 29, 2006

....Madonna was the subject of the most recent searches for 1980s musical acts on Yahoo!, according to Yahoo! Buzz, which bases its report on more than 116 million uses of the computer search engine in the United States each month. The top five ’80s musical acts that were the basis of Yahoo! searches also included Michael Jackson, U2, Aerosmith and Def Leppard.

The people from Yahoo! decided to compile the statistics because of what it claimed was an increase in interest in the pop culture of the ’80s because of the release this weekend of the movie "Miami Vice," which was inspired by a 1980s television show by the same name....

The Inside Scoop on Justin Timberlake, Aerosmith and More

Rolling Stone
July 28, 2006

How dope was the World Cup? The Smoking Section caught the finals at a pro-Italy underground coffee shop in Amsterdam. It was fun. We were in Europe because Justin Timberlake is back...

The next day we jetted up to heaven (Amsterdam), where the S.S. strolled into the Tweede Kamer...

Upon our return, the Smoking Section was stoked to get a call from Steven Tyler, now in the clear after undergoing treatment to cauterize a broken blood vessel in his throat. "At least I got the insurance money," he says. During his doctor-imposed bout of silence, Tyler plotted the future of Aerosmith, which he revealed only to the S.S. First, the band's been writing a new album, and then there's the Route of All Evil Tour, kicking off in September with Mötley Crüe. (Years ago, certain Aero and Crüe members met in rehab clinics.) But this is what's really making Tyler lick his lips: Inspired by a July 4th performance backed by the Boston Pops, he says, "My goal is to take songs like 'Home Tonight,' 'Dream On' and a shitload of the good ones and go out with a fifty-piece orchestra." Also, "I want to do a string of shows at Madison Square Garden where the first night we do Toys in the Attic and Rocks, in order, the second night Pump and Aerosmith, etc." And look out for Tyler on TV's Two and a Half Men, where he'll play an annoying neighbor who rocks out all night and all day...

EMI and Warner Music Drop Merger Plans

The Envelope, CA
July 27, 2006

EMI Group and Warner Music Group today said they have dropped plans for a multibillion-dollar global music merger in the wake of uncertainty created by a European court's decision to undo the deal that created Sony BMG Music Entertainment...

The merger of the two companies came under question after the ruling by the European Union's Court of First Instance that regulators had made a "manifest error" when they approved the 2004 combination of Japan's Sony Corp. and Germany's Bertelsmann. The court found that regulators did not sufficiently investigate whether the combination would create a monopoly.

Sony and Bertelsmann - which sell music created by such industry legends as Aerosmith, Barbra Streisand and Elvis Presley - have said they will challenge the decision, which was issued in response to a complaint filed on behalf of 2,500 independent music labels. A decision could take as long as five months...

Lee's Stage Ride

PR Inside (Pressemitteilung), Austria
July 26, 2006

Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee plans to build a rollercoaster to use on stage during the band's performances on their upcoming tour.

The Wild Side rockers, who are touring America with Aerosmith this September (06), hope to add the theme park ride to the flying, spinning and upside-down drums that have featured in their previous shows.

Lee explains, "I want to build a rollercoaster, drop the drums on it and put two seats in the back so I can grab two fans, strap 'em in and take 'em for a ride while I'm playing. We've looked at it but it's f**king ridiculously expensive."

Joe Perry's Rock Your World Info - eBay Auctions

Posted by AaronPerry on AF1 Forum
July 24, 2006, 1:47 pm

"Just so everyone knows 'Times are not tough' for Joe or anything like that - we are just in the process of just thinning out some of the gear that has been accumulated for 30+ years of collecting. We are running out of room to store and keep track of everything so thought it would be a great opportunity for the fans to get a piece of Joe's personal collection. If you notice the two auctions we have we did not use a reserve price and we are not starting at crazy high prices. We want to give an opportunity all the fans to be able to have a chance and not just hold out for the highest dollar. We will also be posting various items via the Rock Your World site for set prices on a first come first serve basis. Again that also insures that fans will be able to get a crack at it and not have to fight off collector bidders on eBay.

If you ever have questions about the authenticity of something or a question about things like this or what's going on Rock Your World feel free to post up or PM me. I may not post up often but I am often just creeping around from time to time."

Mid-Year Tour Figures

Billboard, NY
July 21, 2006

Touring is a global business and the Rolling Stones are, predictably, the top touring band in the world for the first half of 2006. Based on figures reported to Billboard Boxscore from Nov. 1, 2005, through mid-May, the Stones' Bigger Bang tour, produced by Michael Cohl, reported $147.3 million in grosses from 45 shows in U.S. arenas and international stadiums.

While it's doubtful U2 would have passed its elder brethren, the band, which is at second for the mid-year, would have improved its already hefty take of $73 million for the period had it not postponed dates because of a family illness. As reported today, those shows have been rescheduled for later this year.

Bon Jovi is the third-highest-grossing act for the period, reporting more than $65 million and 866,873 in attendance, selling out 54 of 57 shows. Rounding out the top 10 are Billy Joel ($47.4 million), Cirque du Soleil's Delirium ($38.7 million), Aerosmith ($35 million), Coldplay ($29 million), Luis Miguel ($25 million), Trans Siberian Orchestra ($24 million), and Paul McCartney ($17.6 million).

In general, the touring industry is maintaining a healthy pace. Gross dollars for January-June 2006 are up 24.6% from the same period last year, driven mostly by the tours cited above. High ticket prices help boost the increase, however, because attendance is up just 5.4%.

Solo Date for Famous Rock Girlfriend

Boston Globe, MA
July 21, 2006

Hear the name Bebe Buell and you think one of several things: Liv Tyler's mom, or serial rock-star girlfriend, or (if you're an adult magazine connoisseur of a certain age) Miss November 1974. Odds are slim you're picturing the 53-year-old blue-eyed blonde growling punk-metal tunes in a sweaty nightclub, but that's what Buell is going to be doing tomorrow at the Middle East -- with a backing group that includes members of Boston rock bands the Rudds and the Neighborhoods and Buell's husband , Jim Wallerstein.

"My mother tells me that I used to stuff a sock in my pants and stand in front of the mirror with a hairbrush for a microphone," says Buell, on the phone from her home in Portland, Maine. "My roots are in music. But Eileen Ford saw my high school graduation picture, and next thing I knew I was on a plane to New York. That's what threw a monkey wrench in it. The modeling."

Still, Buell managed to keep her toes wet through the years, fronting the B-Sides -- which released a Ric Ocasek-produced EP in 1981 -- and the Gargoyles, which put out an obscure self-titled single in the late '80s. Buell released "Retrosexual," her solo debut, in 1995. But her musical career never gained any traction, and for that Buell blames her love life -- chronicled in all its boldface glory in Buell's 2001 autobiography, "Rebel Heart: An American Rock 'n' Roll Journey."

"I've had this conversation with Chrissie Hynde and Courtney Love," says Buell, who divides her time between Portland and New York. "If they'd dated the men they dated before they picked up their guitars, things would have been different. I'm not trying to name drop, but I've had this conversation with Cher, too, who has more last names than Zsa Zsa. Except she was Cher before she had those last names. I'm remembered as a model who dated a rock star [or 10, among them Steven Tyler, Todd Rundgren, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, Jimmy Page, and Rod Stewart]. It's like being Miss America for the rest of your life. It's a brand."

The last time Buell played in Boston was 1988, opening for the Neighborhoods at the now-defunct Channel nightclub, and it was Neighborhoods frontman David Minehan who encouraged her to do it again. Minehan, a longtime friend who recently produced tracks for Twin Engines, Buell's husband's band, admires Buell, he says, for her good taste in music and her irrepressible nature.

"She didn't come up through the ranks as a musician, she doesn't have a hundred thousand gigs under her belt, but Bebe was able to glean a special look at rock 'n' roll in a golden age," says Minehan. "She has a true rock heart and throws herself to the lions. Hopefully she tastes good."

Buell's set list is a mix of originals and covers, among them Iggy Pop's "Fun Time," the Nightcrawlers' "The Little Black Egg," and Leon Russell's "Superstar." She and her new band performed their maiden gig at Buell's birthday bash at the Cutting Room in New York a couple of weeks ago, and according to bassist Tony Goddess, it was a great success.

"Liv told me it was the best band Bebe's ever had," Goddess reports. "We showed up for the job pretty well-prepared, but she can draw performances out of guys. 'You've got to be more nasty,' she'd tell us. 'You've got to rock harder.' She knows where she wants to be in the rock 'n' roll spectrum."

And while Buell's place in the pantheon is more a function of association than accomplishment, she has no regrets. Her role as a mother, she says, has been the most important part of her life.

"The day the Gargoyles' record deal papers landed in my lawyers' office was the day the paternity thing went public," Buell says, referring to the revelation in the early '90s that Aerosmith frontman Tyler was her daughter's biological father, and not Rundgren, who raised Liv as his own. "I was not about to start touring when my daughter just found out who she is. So I became supermom."

In true supermom fashion, Buell maintains a good relationship with Tyler.

"Liv's dad comes to Portland to visit," she says. "He flies up on his little plane and we spoil him and feed him and give him a dose of real life. We take his cell phone and hide it from him."

But despite her long history of close connections with some of rock's brightest talents, Buell insists that her musical path is her own.

"I don't think those guys influenced me at all as a musician," she says. "They required a lot of attention. When you're young you want to take care of your boyfriend. It was difficult to have my own voice during that time. But it's all part of my journey. You go through it for a reason. I've known the most amazing people, I have a gorgeous grandson, and I can still pack a room. That's moving to me. I'm an entertainer."

Concert tours' 2006 gross up 38.5 percent

United Press International
July 19, 2006

The take for the top 100 U.S. concert tours in the first half of 2006 was up 38.5 percent, totaling $1.012 billion, but the biggest stars are aging.

The concert industry has been dominated by performers who have been popular for decades, Pollstar reported. Rock stars in their 50s and even 60s draw the biggest crowds, but they can't continue to perform indefinitely.

In the country music arena, younger performers are more common, the report said. Of the 12 acts in the Top 100, almost all are relative newcomers.

Fall Out Boy is the one new rock band that grossed $11 million and finished at No. 29 on the concert tour chart. It sold almost 400,000 tickets -- more than all but eight acts on the list.

Pollstar said the top 20 midyear tours included Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, Tim McGraw/Faith Hill, Cirque du Soleil, Celine Dion, Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Coldplay, George Strait, Luis Miguel, Aerosmith, Rascal Flatts, Pearl Jam, RBD, Dave Matthews Band, Nickelback, Elton John, U2 and Jimmy Buffet.

Sales From Artist Websites - Mp3's

Market Wire - Press Release

Framingham, MA -- (Market Wire) -- July 18, 2006 -- nimbit -- the management system for music professionals -- empowers musicians by letting them sell mp3's from their personal website. Indie musicians can place their own digital downloads for sale and make significantly more money than by selling through another company. Each mp3 is completely compatible with all major digital music players.

Digital distribution commonly requires a "middle-man" to go between the artist and the sales site. Ultimately, the selling site (iTunes, eMusic, etc.) takes a portion of the sale. Then the "middle-man" takes their piece, and often another organization may demand a percentage as well. When it reaches the artist, often upwards of 70% of the initial purchase amount has disappeared. On a typical 99 cent download, the artist receives only 30 cents.

From a nimbit account, artists place their digital goods for sale on their own website alongside CD's, t-shirts, and any other item. Fans can buy securely using any major credit card. Without a middle-man, artists retain a minimum of 80% of the purchase price on digital downloads. While the artist may have received only 30 cents before, through nimbit they would receive 80 cents. This 260% difference allows artists to make more money while gaining wider exposure and control of their career.

About nimbit

nimbit is the complete management solution for music professionals. From your nimbit account, you can efficiently sell music, mp3's, and merch; book a gig; manage your mailing list; and handle all aspects of your career. A confident Clarkson hits her stride

Boston Globe, MA
July 18, 2006

Reprinted from late editions of yesterday's Globe.

...Sunday night at the Tweeter Center, Clarkson didn't sing "A Moment Like This," the power ballad that will forever be associated with her first-season "Idol" victory. She did showcase a handful of new songs from her forthcoming third album, and the new material suggests that Clarkson is exploring a rougher section of the pop-anthem 'hood.

Even the stark, one-word titles evoke a new edge. "Maybe" began as a calm, dark, acoustic number, then split open to let the emo-influenced guts tumble out. "Anymore" was more Aerosmith than "American Idol," all nasty licks and stiff beats. The funk-soul sing-along "Yeah" is a radio hit-in-waiting, and if the Ford Corporation can translate the urge to jump up and down into the urge to buy cars, "Go" -- already the theme for a Ford ad campaign -- will have earned its corporate sponsorship....

Ok, so the Producer who is doing our record (Marti Frederiksen) has also worked with a million other artists, one of which is Aerosmith. So last night Marti was recording a vocal track with Steven Tyler and I stopped by the studio to drop off a piece of gear and say hello. Steven saw me come in and invited me to sit in on the session. What happened next I will never forget for the rest of my life... So for the next 2 hours I got to watch one of the greatest Rock & Roll singers EVER sing and record..."

'Delirium' aims to capture rock arena vibe

Boston Globe, MA
July 16, 2006

It's official: Cirque du Soleil is no longer a cirque.

After 22 years of pushing the boundaries of the traditional peanuts-and-clowns-and-elephants act, Cirque du Soleil abandons the big top in its new touring show, "Delirium," which plays Worcester's DCU Center on Friday and Saturday.

"All the previous Cirque shows were based on what we call an acrobatic skeleton," said Michel Lemieux, the co creator, with Victor Pilon, of the production. "But with 'Delirium' [Cirque du Soleil co founder] Gilles Ste.-Croix wanted a musical skeleton" -- a show built around music, not circus acrobatics.

In a symbol of its new musical identity, "Delirium" is the first Cirque show to play sports arenas -- the kind that host Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones -- rather than big-top tents....

Sony BMG Loses EU's Merger OK

'The Envelope, CA
July 14, 2006

In an unexpected move that rocked the global music industry, one of Europe's highest courts Thursday threw out regulators' approval of the 2004 merger that created Sony BMG Music Entertainment, the second-largest music company in the world....

Sources at the companies said they would re-submit the deal for approval within a week. A decision could take as long as five months...

If that petition fails, executives may be forced to undo the partnership that collected $4.2 billion in revenue last year and was responsible for more than 25% of U.S. album sales. The Sony BMG combination reduced the world's major record companies to four and brought such artists as Aerosmith, Barbra Streisand and Elvis Presley under one roof...

"We may very well reapprove the Sony BMG merger," commission spokesman Jonathan Todd said. "But it's also possible that we'll reach different conclusion. We have more data about the merger now...."

Aerosmith / Motley Crue Tour Due Earlier

Online Rock Radio, Greece
July 13, 2006

The Aerosmith/Motley Crue Route Of All Evil tour will get underway earlier than first thought. Opening night was supposed to be September 14th in Holmdel, New Jersey, but the bands have added two shows ahead of that. The first gig now is September 5th in Columbus, Ohio, and the second one is September 7th in Hartford, Connecticut. As it stands now, Holmdel is the third stop on the tour, but since it's a week after the previous show, don't be surprised if more dates are added in between.

In addition, a second show has been added in Mansfield, Massachusetts, on September 28th.

There's still a rumor going around that Aerosmith will be part of a triple-bill with the Who and the Rolling Stones in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on September 23, even though Aerosmith and Motley Crue are booked to play that night in Camden, New Jersey.

Joe Perry Interview

LifeTips.com, Inc., MA
July 12, 2006

Joe Perry

Some teenagers modeled their air guitar technique on Joe Perry. Others had pictures of him clad in black leather posted on their bedroom walls. Regardless of how big a fan you are, it's hard to imagine Aerosmith's 56-year-old lead guitarist as anything other than a Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. Behind the rocker image, though, Perry is a family man with some basic advice for making it all work.

Joe Perry joined Aerosmith at its formation in 1969 and soon became a permanent iconic stature to millions of rock-and-roll fans. Over the past three decades, Perry helped drive Aerosmith to sales of more than 100 million albums, four Grammy Awards, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

In the 1970s, Perry had formed his own band - The Joe Perry Project. Their debut record, "Let the Music Do the Talking," reached #47 on the Billboard album charts, selling 250,000 copies domestically. He released his first solo record, the self-titled "Joe Perry," in May 2005.

Perry is married to Billie Paullete Montgomery Perry since 1985 after meeting on the set of his "Black Velvet Pants" video in 1983. Billie appears on one of Joe's guitars, which is dubbed "The Billie Perry Guitar".

Melanie Nayer, editor of LifeTips.com, sat down with Joe Perry on July 3 for a discussion about marriage, kids and managing life.

Marriage Tip
Perry credits his wife as his "muse" for some of his recent solo releases, which were created in the "Boneyard," Perry’s home studio in Boston. But when the band goes out to play, Perry’s wife Billie Paulette is not far behind.

Perry and his wife, Billie Paulette, have survived the hurdles of marriage, including the rise and fall of Aerosmith, and have been married for 20 years. "Billie and I were dating before there was real romance. There was a very strong physical attraction at the beginning, but it has to be more than physical for it to last," said Perry.

So what is their secret tip to making a marriage work? It’s simple, said Perry, "Our relationship comes first. Our family comes first."

On Kids
Whether you’re a rock-and-roll legend or a struggling artist, any parent will tell you there is no secret "tip" to raising kids.

Perry's parenting tip: "The kids get a vote. That's very important when it comes to raising kids. And always keep the bigger picture in mind."

Perry and Billie made the decision early on to bring the kids on the road during tours. "The kids were brought up that way, and they like it and we’re very lucky. But the kids got a vote," said Perry. "We asked, ‘Do you want to go to school or do you want to travel?’ ‘Do you want to play sports, or do you want to go on the road?’ And the kids made the decision."

Perry's four sons have benefited from their own decisions - two of them opted to tour with their dad and be home-schooled on the road. His second oldest son, Anthony, will be attending the School of Visual Arts in New York this fall.

On the road, Perry’s tour bus is customized for family needs, which includes a bunk bed for the kid’s tutors.

According to Perry, "There is no perfect solution; we keep all options open. And we always reinforced that home is where the family is."

Life Tip
Perry has been making music for three decades. Through years of drug-induced friction with his Aerosmith bandmates to releasing four successful solo albums and breaking into the gourmet food industry with his Rock Your World Boneyard Brew hot sauces, Perry has developed a simple outlook: "Take life one day at a time. It’s cliché, and it’s been expounded upon by thousands of philosophers, but it’s true," he said. "Take life on life’s terms – one day at a time." And with a quintessential rock 'n' roll grin, he adds, "And have fun while you're doing it."

New Aerosmith Album Not Due Until 2007

Online Rock Radio, Greece
July 10, 2006

Aerosmith won't finish their new album before they go on tour with Motley Crue this autumn, but that's actually a good thing according to guitarist Joe Perry. The band had hoped to get everything finished, but Perry told us the record has now been pushed into next year because they didn't want to rush things and have the music suffer: "We're definitely not gonna be able to get it out before the tour starts. We just can't do the songs justice. We are getting a fair amount of work done on it, and it'll probably be about half done by the time we start working on it again in February. So we're hoping to have a late spring-early summer release."

The Aerosmith / Motley Crue Route Of All Evil tour starts September 14th in Holmdel, New Jersey, and the bands have announced shows until the end of November.

Joint Rolling Stones, The Who, Aerosmith concert in Canada?

Online Rock Radio, Greece
July 7, 2006

If published reports are to be believed, a massive concert featuring classic rock legends the Rolling Stones, the Who, and Aerosmith is being lined up for Eastern Canada in September. Several sources are reporting that the Stones will play an outdoor show in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on September 23rd, and that the bill might include the Who and Aerosmith. There's been no official confirmation of anything, beyond the Halifax government authorizing $100,000 for security and related costs for a "high profile" event, but they won't reveal what's being planned. The late September date coincides with when the Who are supposed to be touring North America, so that could work out, but Aerosmith is already committed to playing in Camden, New Jersey, on September 23rd, as part of their Route Of All Evil tour with Motley Crue.

The Stones are also rumored to play a handful of other shows across Canada this autumn.

The Boston Pops and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler shared the stage at the annual Fourth of July concert and fireworks display before about half a million spectators.

Tyler -- appearing with guitarist Joe Perry -- sang Aerosmith standards including their hit "Dream On." Tyler danced with Pops conductor Keith Lockhart during "Walk This Way."

Tyler took the stage for the nationally televised part of the show at the Hatch Shell after Lockhart and the Pops played the 1812 Overture, complete with ceremonial cannon fire from the Massachusetts National Guard.

Boston began its Fourth of July celebration with a reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Old State House.

The USS Constitution made its annual turnaround cruise through the Boston Harbor and held a ceremony swearing in new citizens.

Fire and spice light up a spirited Fourth

Boston Globe, MA
July 5, 2006

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith performed at the Hatch Shell last night.
(William Moore for the Boston Globe)

....People came from all over the world, more than 500,000 strong, for one of America's biggest and most famous Independence Day celebrations, braving threatening weather and the sheer crush of humanity for a red, white, and blue themed evening with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and Boston legends Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, topped with a fireworks display involving 19,000 pounds of pyrotechnics....

Keith Lockhart, conductor of the Boston Pops, seemed quite at home with the pop stars, hamming it up at the microphone with Tyler during rehearsals on Monday. "What could be more iconically American than rock 'n' roll?" Lockhart said before the concert. "Arguably, Boston's two most famous bands are the Pops and Aerosmith."

Last night, Tyler and Perry drew thunderous applause as they played several hits including "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," "Dream On," and "Walk This Way...."

Star-spangled program overcomes a few flaws

Boston Globe, MA
July 5, 2006

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, two-fifths of Aerosmith, were the headliners of the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on the Esplanade last night. But the crowd of 500,000 and the national television audience got three songs and just over eight minutes from them.

The two men put out more energy than some performers deliver in an entire show, and Tyler, fresh from throat surgery, sounded fine in "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," "Dream On," and "Walk This Way." He's got power, and high B-flat holds fewer terrors for him than it does for Luciano Pavarotti these days. Dressed in a leopard print shirt, open in the front to display coast-to-coast chest and an amulet big enough to be a walrus tusk, Tyler wove around Perry, dressed as Oscar Wilde, like the serpent tempting Eve.

The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra provided a sumptuous sonic backdrop; Tyler told the television audience that he wants to make an orchestral album.

But the rest of the context was not inspiring. For viewers at home, commercials meant they missed some of the best stuff, like the brass in "Sing, Sing, Sing," and some of the weirdest, like high-energy conductor Keith Lockhart trying to lead an audience sing-along of "YMCA," complete with Village People moves....

Tyler and Co. Rock This Way

Boston Herald, MA
July 5, 2006

Whether he likes it or not, Keith Lockhart is having a rock 'n' roll summer.

First My Morning Jacket and then Aimee Mann sat in with him at Symphony Hall. Then, last night, Lockhart let Steven Tyler and Joe Perry take the reigns for a trio of Aerosmith tunes at the Fireworks Spectacular on the Esplanade....

Tyler and Perry threw down well enough.

Fresh from surgery on his pipes, Steven Tyler looked bronzed and healthy. He and Perry took the Pops through "I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing," "Dream On," for which Tyler played the intro on piano, and "Walk this Way," which Lockhart joined in for a few bars. The Pops worked double time to underscore the signature guitar riff of the latter, following Perry’s lead.

Overall, Tyler sounded like he’s made a full recovery. His voice still has all the power it used to, evident in his trademark screech. What might be missing is a bit of the precision it once possessed, but that’s something that fades with age. And when all is said and done, he can always fall back on that Jagger swagger he’s got down so well - it always bring the fans out in droves.

Oh yeah, and afterwards, there were some fireworks.

Pops, Aerosmith members in Boston's Independence Day concert

Boston Globe, MA
July 4, 2006

Stubborn clouds and early showers didn't deter thousands of Fourth of July revelers from crowding the Esplanade Tuesday for fireworks, the 1812 Overture and rock-n-roll Hall of Famers from Aerosmith.

"What could be more iconically American than rock 'n' roll?" said Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart hours before he shared the stage with Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry. "Arguably, Boston's two most famous bands are the Pops and Aerosmith."

The aging rockers from Boston-based Aerosmith headlined the show with the Boston Pops at the Hatch Shell. It is the first time that Tyler, 58, and Lawrence-native Perry, 55, have played at the event.

Tyler pranced onstage in a black-and-leopard-print open shirt with tight white pants and an American flag bandana flowing from his microphone as he sang Aerosmith standards, wailing during a rendition of the band's hit "Dream On."

Backstage a baby-faced sailor in dress whites slow-danced with a young woman.

Tyler danced with Lockhart during "Walk This Way," singing the line "give me a kiss" and then dead-panning to Lockhart: "not you."

...State police estimated 450,000 to 500,000 people gathered for the concert and 23-minute pyro-musical fireworks extravaganza near the Charles River...

Aerosmith was the big draw.

"I had their albums," said Lockhart, 47. "They're nearing 60 at this point. But they really still perform like their lives depended on it. They eat the stage up..."

CBS4-Boston, MA
July 3, 2006

It almost doesn’t seem like rehearsal day at the Esplanade on Monday – the good weather seems to be drawing tons of people to the banks of the Charles River in Boston.

Whether they came from far away, or from just around the corner, the patriotic faithful flocked to the Esplanade for the Fourth of July celebration. Decked out in their holiday best, friends and family camped out to get the best seats for Monday night’s dress rehearsal of a show deemed to be one of most star-studded event ever.

People are ready for this evening’s practice – they have their blankets ready, umbrellas and food on hand, and they say they are ready for a stellar performance. Many people came to the Hatch Shell to watch Steven Tyler and Joe Perry belt out some tunes with the Boston Pops.

One spectator said the band’s sound check was all he needed to hear to pull up a chair and wait at the gates. “I was really impressed with Aerosmith and said that I couldn’t leave, so I said I was going to stay… and now we are camping out.”

Although the weather for tonight’s dress rehearsal is clear, Tuesday’s show might have a couple of raindrops to contend with. CBS4’s Ken Barlow says showers and thunderstorms will enter the region in the afternoon, but if all goes well, the front should be offshore by sunset, which will create more favorable viewing prospect
