New Product To Demo

CNET News.com, CA
January 30, 2007

eJamming:  Skype for musicians

eJamming, which makes software that enables people to practice music together... is announcing a service that works for non-MIDI instruments... and they're going to demo their new product on Wednesday at the Demo '07 conference...

[Alan] Glueckman says he had his cousin, Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer, in mind when he built this product. The idea being that Aerosmith can still have rehearsals when one or more band members are out of town. Kramer hasn't yet tried the product, Glueckman told me...

Inhale? They sure do

London Free Press, Canada
January 30, 2007

Canisters of oxygen are flying off the shelf amid reports of increased stamina, alertness

"At first Rick Bennett was reluctant to stock Oxia, a personal oxygen dispenser, in his vitamin and sports supplement store....

He counts Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, the New York Giants and 12 NHL teams as customers. Dave Suprenant, head athletic trainer for the Dallas Stars, introduced it to the team's players two years ago. Now players like defenceman Trevor Daley regularly use it to turn around from long shifts, and many more take puffs to cope when playing in higher altitude cities like Calgary and Colorado..."

Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" begins an eighth week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 but barely edges out Fall Out Boy's "This Ain't a Scene, It's An Arms Race," which debuts at No. 2 thanks to 162,000 digital downloads. This is the highest bow for a band since radio-only titles joined the chart in December 1998. The last group to start as well or better was Aerosmith, who debuted at No. 1 under prior Hot 100 rules with "I Don't Want To Miss a Thing" in September 1998...

Look who's playing at Murrayfield in summer

Scotsman, UK
January 25, 2007

Murrayfield Stadium is to stage up to five major concerts this summer as it attempts to establish itself as a serious rival to Glasgow's SECC.

Rock legends The Who and Aerosmith are among the acts being lined up for full-scale stadium concerts for crowds of up to 55,000.

But the venue's capacity will be cut to below 20,000 for some of the concerts in a bid to compete directly with the SECC. Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins is being lined up for one such concert...

Excerpts - Ross Halfin's Diary

RossHalfin.co.uk

January 25

My Yogi going nicely green, if you look hard you'll see some bits of fox stuck to him. Still cold... I hear rumour Steven Tyler is invading the UK next week, I wonder if he'd like to go hunting.

January 24

Woke up to snow, lots of it and I had to go to the hospital for an x-ray. Spoke to Phil Lemon, an expert on broken legs and other broken bits of the body. Well, he thinks he is. 'Isn't the snow pretty,' he said. Pretty? It's fucking freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezing and I hate the cold. I told him if he likes it so much to go camping - see how much he likes it then...

John Bionelli has called from death's door to tell me it's Frehley.

"By the way it's Frehley not Freely, wasn't it me for spelling your idols names wrong? Well right back at you...
JB"

I should hang my head in shame, but I won't 'cos let's face it, Ace ain't exactly Jimmy Page. We discused the Aerosmith set list for Europe (I know, we were both THAT bored), both agreeing that they need to play more '80s Aerosmith - no one knows Dream On over here...

Saw a wild fox in my garden, it was digging up the lawn. After shouting at it a bit (it ignored me) I'd had enough. I grabbed my big machete (the one I bought in Laos) and cornered it. I chopped off it's head with one blow - it made a mess of the snow...

January 23

John Bionelli has broken his leg in two places wrestling, Bazza has broken both his legs skiing, my osteopath, Bent Harry, has broken his arm fighting while skiing and I fell over walking through my front door, I've fractured my foot. A Happy New year.

Some pictures of Ace Freely's best friend Gene. Plus a cold view of Battersea Power Station from last Friday. See more...

Old Time Rock & Roller

Boston Herald, MA
January 25, 2007

Now in his fourth decade of touring, Bob Seger may still sing “Turn the Page,” but the lyrics don’t hit with the same hard truth. For his first tour since 1996, the 61-year-old Seger ...plays a sold-out TD Banknorth Garden [Saturday] and Worcester’s DCU Center on Tuesday...

During the 30 years between scoring his first regional hit in 1966 with “East Side Story” and his commercial cooling off with 1995’s modest-selling album “It’s a Mystery,” Seger spent few nights in his own bed. In the beginning it was playing local gigs to make gas money to head to where the fans were - which, in Seger’s case, was often Boston. He’s recorded live records here and said he’s always shared a kinship with Boston fans and bands such as Aerosmith and J. Geils...

Aerosmith's Joe Perry:

Ultimate-Guitar.com
January 20, 2007

'I have 600 guitars!'

As one of America’s most loved hard rock outfits, Aerosmith are one of the world’s most successful and influential bands. Hailing out of Boston, their ballsy and bluesy raunch underpinned by a Stones-esque swagger, has captivated audiences for more than 30 odd years. Amidst the glory though there has also been the pain, drugs and infighting which led to the band imploding at the height of their reign in the later part of the ‘70s. But with the original band regrouping years later in the ‘80s, the band rose like a phoenix from the ashes, by staging one of the most remarkable comebacks in rock history. Not only did the band return to the top, but have remained ever since as relevant to a newer generation of rockers as they were back in the day.

Today Aerosmith are back in the saddle again and continuing to ride the crest of a wave. As one of the band’s mainstays, guitarist Joe Perry has provided the sonic wizardry to many of the group’s well known and most loved anthems. At the core of his playing lies a love of the blues that is tempered by a tastefulness that testifies to why Perry’s ability and talent is highly respected by the guitar fraternity the world over. Just like his playing, as a person Perry is extremely articulate, humble in nature and very generous in spirit, qualities which set him apart from other rockers of his ilk. Joe Matera caught up with Joe Perry as the latter was winding up the remaining dates of the recent Aerosmith-Motley Crue U.S tour to chat about Aerosmith’s recently released new greatest hits package, his evolving guitar playing and Jeff Beck.

Ultimate-Guitar: What’s the background to the two new songs that are included on your recently released greatest hits package, Devil’s Got A New Disguise?

Joe Perry: We had them in our back pocket for a while as they were going to be part of a studio album that we were going to put. It was supposed to have been finished this Spring and put out this last Summer but we just didn’t have time to finish the record. In between Steven’s throat problems and just when he was starting to get better we found out about Tom being sick and him not being able to be in the studio. We just couldn’t keep the momentum that we needed to finish the record going due to all the health problems. But we did manage to finish these couple of songs. They were kind of finished but just needed to be replayed, so everybody just kind of came in and did what needed to be done to get the songs ready for the record. And because we had a slot locked in for a new record, Sony suggested putting out a greatest hits record. So we thought it was a good idea and thought we could put these new songs on there to give the fans a taste of what the new record is going to sound like. That way we would also have a new album to tour behind because we knew we were going to go out and do this Aerosmith-Motley Crue tour this past Fall.

Aerosmith has been one of the very few bands to have emerged during the ‘70s and not only still be around but be at the very top of their game, how does it feel after all these years?

Right now, I feel like a tired motherfucker [laughs] I’ve just spent three months on the road in the States and Canada. I know the reason we did this was because we had to cancel so many gigs last Spring because of Steven’s throat, like we had this tour we had to finish so it all kind rolled into this thing this Fall. Now that we ‘re wrapping this up, it kind of clears the decks so next year can start to focus on working in the studio and hopefully do a world tour. What we’re looking at is coming back and playing some places we haven’t played a long time. And places we’ve never played. It’s been eight years since we’ve been in Europe and I don’t how long it’s been since we’ve been in Australia, and these are all things I want to do and I know all the other guys in the band feel the same way too - we want to get back and play back out in the world. We’ve played America enough for different reasons and we’ve stayed here but it’s time for playing in other parts of the world. We’re an international band and we’ve played out there and it’s time to get back and go to a lot of places we haven’t played in a while.

Your last album Honkin’ On Bobo was the very first time in many years that you all went into the studio together and recorded an album that way, so how’s the recording aspect changed for you over the years?

The way people record records or can record records now, like recording on computers has really changed the way you make records because you can make them any way you want. It used to be you’d go in and you had to play pretty much as a band and get a good take and that was it. When we did our first couple of records that were done, I think on 16 track tape, though we first got a taste of being able to overdub and that kind of thing, it still relied pretty much on a good performance from the band. Over the years it just changed where it’s this thing where you can put albums together and songs together piece by piece. The guys don’t even have to be in the same studio to do a take when they’re making an album. So it really has widened all your choices and doing Honkin’ On Bobo kind of brought us back to what we do best and that is, play together as a band. And you turn on the tape and you hopefully capture that and that is where an album like Just Push Play wasn’t. That was done in bits and pieces and though there were some good songs on there I know that record would have sounded different if we had recorded it the way we did Honkin’ On Bobo. But you try different things and live and learn. But this next record we’re going to do, I think we will probably incorporate the best of both worlds.

Aerosmith have weathered through an ever changing musical climate that has seen a lot of changes in styles and sounds in music over the years. How do you think your sound has evolved from the early days to now?

Again there are so many different choices now. It used to be that you were desperate to get a kind of distortion and a certain kind of sound. But now you’ve got so many choices where because everything from reissued guitar amps to reissued guitars is available, you no longer have to buy these old original guitars from the ‘50s to get a certain sound. I mean, you can get a half decent sound plugging right into a computer. It’s not what I choose to do but it certainly adds another color to your paint palette. So overall with my style I kind of lean towards a cleaner sound with a little more drive out of it. And it sounds a little more fresher too when it sounds a lot cleaner. I know when I’m writing songs and when I’m laying basic tracks down and even when I’m playing live that I tend to go with a cleaner sound.

Speaking of guitar sounds, looking back over your whole Aerosmith catalogue, is there any album or albums that stick out that you are the most happy with and where it captures you at your best?

Well looking back at some of the first few records I know I was still trying to figure out what the studio was all about. When I was a kid I thought that once I could get into the studio it would be really easy to get this kind of sound or that kind of sound. But then you realize that once you’re in there, all it is about is just a microphone picking up the sound you’re making and I think that the first few records, I was learning that. But I wouldn’t go back and change it because that kind of naivety gives those songs a feel that they have. And in some ways I’d kind of go back and try and get it sounding like that again, but it’s kind of hard. So I suppose in my own kind of ignorance, I’ve ended up making these guitar sounds that I think are classic now. I think I’m now able to kind of just pick the sounds that I think will work best for the song. And that is always an art. Once again it’s what your ears hear once you go into the studio and then you try and get that on tape so it’s always a big experiment.

You’re a long time guitar connoisseur and have an ever expanding guitar collection, how many have you got in your collection currently?

I would say I have about close to 600 guitars.

Out of all of those what would you say is your most favorite and most treasured guitar?

My ‘Billy’ guitar—a Gibson Lucille that was built about four years ago and that has a picture of my wife on it. It’s unusual because not only does it look great but it also sounds great and is a real workhorse. I use it in the studio and I use it live. It’s also the most unique guitar because there is only one of them in the whole world.

Jeff Beck is one of your main musical idols - does he still thrill you as a guitar player?

Definitely, I went to see him play about a month and half ago and we were lucky enough to see him in a small theatre and we were able to sit about 30 feet away and he was astounding in his commanding of the instrument and his sound. We talked a little bit afterwards and we talked a bit about technique and just some of that stuff. But I’ve known him off and on and been lucky enough to meet him over the years where we bumped into each other at different things. I’ve probably seen him except for that tour he did about five years, I’ve seen him on every tour since the first Jeff Beck Group. He’s constantly pushing the edge. I still think he’s the best guitar player in the world.

You jammed with him once onstage at an Aerosmith show in Anaheim back in the mid 1970s?

You’re right, you’ve been reading up? Yeah we did and it was my birthday and we were on tour with them and he came up onstage and played Train Kept A Rollin’ with us and that was a moment I’ll never forget.

In your career have you ever let tracks go by that you knew weren’t your best but you still allowed them on an album in order to fulfill your contractual obligations?

No, I’ve always felt like I’ve put everything I’ve got into every track. I’ve always felt that. But I’ve certainly looked back at tracks later and gone, ‘that one sucks! We shouldn’t have put that one on there’ or ‘what was I thinking’ ...all those thoughts. But at the time I always feel I always put everything we got into a track and I’ve never felt like I’ve just tossed it off. Maybe that is one of the things that has kept us going all this time.

Tales from the Gridiron

Don't look now, but here comes Pat Patriot
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The tour has been over for a little more than a month but things are underway for the next set of shows which should be announced very soon. The guys are all taking time off in very different ways and places. Steven enjoys exotic locations while Tom and Joey are spending time in warm Florida. Brad is loving being home at his new house in North Carolina and surprisingly Joe is has been staying put in Beantown following the Patriots.

Speaking of the Patriots, Joe took his boys to the playoff game on Jan 7th at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. Pats owner, Robert Kraft, invited him to the game back in late November when Robert came to the Aerosmith show in West Palm Beach. Robert said “If we are in the playoffs we want you there.” The weather that day was near 55 degrees so it was a perfect day for tailgating. Joe brought his bus and just about any kind of meat you could think of. I didn’t see any vegetables unless you count relish. Before the game Joe and clan toured the field and said hello to the Krafts and to Donald Trump, who was getting his own tour. The Pats brass asked Joe if he wanted to see the players come out of the huge Patriots helmet that is set up in one of the end zone. If you look at the video that is up on this site, it is from inside the helmet.

The boys decided to watch the 1st quarter from the field and it was awesome. The Patriots crushed the Jets. The Pats could have beaten the 1972 Dolphins on that day. They watched the rest of the game in a box right near the press box. Tom Hamilton and his wife Terry also took in the game but they chose to sit in seats right on the 50-yard line. The next week the Patriots beat San Diego in San Diego so they get to play their arch rivals the Indianapolis Colts in Indianapolis. The winner goes to the Super Bowl. The loser goes home.

Being from Boston my allegiance is to all the teams I grew up loving but I have noticed that in other parts of the country the fans go just berserk for their teams and I wanted to point out a couple in particular. The Cowboys fans in Dallas absolutely live and die by their team. In KC it doesn’t matter how good the Chiefs are they have the best tail gating in the country every single game. In Washington the Redskins have sold out games for like the last 50 years, which is a true testament of their die-hard fans. Switching to baseball, I hate to admit it but Yankees and Mets fans seem to be most vocal and knowledgeable - but Sox fans have the most heart and the best place to play. There is nothing like Fenway Park. Wrigley is a close second with a great vibe. Chicago is a great city and going to a game at Wrigley was on my list of things to do. I accomplished that a few years ago. Detroit is hockey town and they have the most passionate fans in America. For Canadian hockey teams, it’s a 5-way tie.

I hope you enjoy the pictures from the game as much as I enjoyed taking them and being there. I will fill you in next week on what the spring and summer looks like.

See you on the Road!

John B.

PS. I had an on ice accident last week in my Wednesday morning hockey league. I zigged when I should have zagged and ran into an opposing player. Looks like I will be in this walking cast for the next few months but hope to be back in action soon.

In an age when air travel is stressful and time consuming, the Music Industry takes advantage of EDNet's bi-directional connections which allow record company producers and executives to supervise distant recording sessions from their offices and conference rooms. Industry notables Harry Connick Jr., Bruce Springsteen, and Danny Elfman communicate with record companies in this way. The same technology is also employed for "virtual press junkets."

For example, Aerosmith used EDNet's services to connect to dozens of radio stations across the country in a single afternoon to do individual live interviews, avoiding having to leave the comfort of their home studio....

Hotline: Limp this way

Boston Herald, MA
January 17, 2007

It seems Aerosmith’s assistant tour manager John Bionelli might be taking a “permanent vacation” from ice hockey. Bionelli, a defenseman in the AMHL league, broke his leg in two spots after being involved in a freak collision with a teammate and opposing player in a Jan. 10 game. The AMHL is a competitive men’s recreational league that plays around Boston. According to the league blog written by Jim Dwyer, Bionelli needed pins and rods to hold in place the bones in his lower leg. He is out for the season. Aerosmith has no future tour dates planned.

Chart rules are changing

BBC-Radio 1, UK
January 8, 2007

The Top 40 singles are compiled in a new way since Sunday, January 7th. Singles can now chart from the moment they become available as official downloads. That could be four or five weeks before the CD comes out. Before Sunday, downloads could only chart one week before the CD release. Downloads are no longer affected when the CD is deleted. As long as it's available as a download, it's eligible...

...Old tracks available as downloads can also chart. Such as Aerosmith's -
"I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"
- it was recently performed on X-Factor and enough people then downloaded the original to get it in the chart.

Under the old rules it wasn't eligible, under the new rules it is.

U.S. Stars Shine Again in Japan Ads

Washington Post, DC
January 14, 2007

TOKYO -- Forget the rising stock market or fifth straight year of economic growth. The latest sign of Japan Inc.'s comeback is Cameron Diaz in a slinky black dress gabbing on a phone and strutting to the tune of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" on Japanese television. But this is no film trailer or wacky guest appearance -- it's a 30-second commercial for a cellular telephone company.

And Diaz is hardly alone. As the decade-long recession drifts into memory here, the "Only in Japan" celebrity commercial is enjoying a sudden comeback -- with Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Scarlett Johansson and Kiefer Sutherland among the American stars coming back down to earth in Japan to peddle everything from dairy products to power bars...

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler on the beach in Maui.

Here is Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler as you've never seen him before -- walking around a beach in Maui, Hawaii wearing a skimpy bathing suit.

The 58-year-old star is on a romantic vacation in the island paradise with an unidentified woman and while she seemed content to lie on a lounger and soak up some sun, Tyler strutted around in a bathing suit that leaves little to the imagination.

The wrinkled rocker brought his camera along and snapped pictures of the Hawaiian scenery and of his lovely companion. Then he crawled on top of her for a quick smooch.

When their public display of affection was over, Tyler had to make an important adjustment in his trunks -- and gave his fans all over the world a glimpse of his penis.

Click (here) to see the pics everyone is talking about. Discretion is advised.

Last September, Tyler revealed that he has been battling hepatitis C, a viral blood infection that can cause liver inflammation and lead to cirrhosis and cancer. The disease is commonly spread by the sharing of needles.

The rock legend divorced his wife Teresa Barrick one year ago this month.

January 5

". . . I got the new Uncut magazine February issue. It has a good interview with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Steven gives the best description of what to do and how to do it when listening to Whole Lotta Love. I read it to Jimmy who thought it was hysterical. Can't imagine Robert Plant agreeing...

I spoke to Steven in Boston a couple of times yesterday. He asked me about a Who song that I didn't know. He'd heard it on the radio, although he may have got the title wrong. He was very enthusiastic about coming to Europe. I told him Pete Townshend had written about him on his website. It was nice talking to him - he is the perpetual rock star and I mean that in a nice way . . . "

Celebs Jet to Foxboro for Pats win

" The stargazing was the second-best sport at Gillette Stadium yesterday, with a minigalaxy of celebrity pigskin fans root, root, rooting for the Pats, who advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs by manhandling Chad Pennington [stats] and the Jets and scoring a 37-16 win yesterday.

New York mogul Donald Trump was in the house with his bride, Melania, cheering on the Pats. Well! He was in owner and pal Robert Kraft’s box, what did you expect, a J-E-T-S cheer???

Also schmoozing with the Kraft fam was CBS prez Les Moonves, who was seated next to Robert for most of the action. The proud parents of QB/QT Tom Brady [stats], Tom Brady Sr. and wife Galynn, were pulling for their son’s team from Bank of America’s box, alongside the bank’s CEO, Chad Gifford. Aerosmith ax man - and big Pats fan - Joe Perry was rocking out to “Walk This Way” on the sidelines before the game as the band’s big hit blared from the stadium speakers. Joe’s bandmate Tom Hamilton was also in da house, as was Godsmack’s main man Sully Erna, who took in the action from car czar Ernie Boch’s box. “Yes, Dear” funnyman Mike O’Malley, a New Hampshire homey, was in Foxboro for the big win, along with Procter & Gamble CEO Alan G. Lafley."

VIPs turn out for Pats’ win over Jets

Boston Globe, MA
January 8, 2007

It's playoff time and with a New York team in town you can expect to see Donald Trump. But when The Donald is at The Razor he's all about The Robert. As in the New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft. Trump and his wife, Melania, were on hand to witness the Pats trounce the Jets 37-16 yesterday to advance in the NFL playoffs. Before the game, Kraft was squiring around The Donald, whose TV show "The Apprentice" started its sixth season last night. And Trump, appearing on the WBCN pre game broadcast, was effusive about the Krafts and the Pats as an organization. It was a day of rock at Gillette Stadium, with Aerosmith's Joe Perry on the sidelines (his appearance on the scoreboard brought sustained cheers) and outside the Pats locker room with Pats honcho Jonathan Kraft after the game. Godsmack's Sully Erna was hanging out in auto magnate -- and sometimes rocker -- Ernie Boch Jr.'s box. Making a return to Foxborough for playoff action was Kay Hanley, formerly of Letters to Cleo, who sang the national anthem. The Pats QB's parents, Tom Brady Sr. and his wife, Galynn, were up in the Bank of America box taking in all of the action with Bank of America's chairman emeritus Chad Gifford and bank senior veep Jim Mahoney. And a very tan CBS CEO Les Moonves was spotted near the end of the game in the owner's box seated next to Bob Kraft.

Devil’s Got a New Disguise:
The Very Best of Aerosmith

Artist: Aerosmith
(Sony/BMG)

Reviewer: Joseph Loh

Selecting tracks for a “best of” compilation of Aerosmith music is always going to be a difficult task. Not only is there a legion of outstanding tracks to choose from, but it has to go one up over existing compilations. Amongst others, there is Greatest Hits, representative of their stint with Columbia Records, Big Ones for their Geffen years, and then there are the career-spanning double-disc sets in Aerosmith Gold and Oh Yeah! The Ultimate Aerosmith Hits.

So what does this one have in its favour? Well, that depends on what sort of Aerosmith fan you are. If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool fan and own most of their albums, and possibly one or more of the previous compiles (and your daughter is also named Liv), you’re likely to be disappointed – and might feel cheated, even.

On the other hand, if you don’t own any of their albums or compilations and are just a cursory fan, well, this one’s just for you.

Most of their hits are represented here, from hard-rocking tracks such as Dude (Looks Like a Lady), Love in an Elevator, Walk This Way (with Run-D.M.C., not the original) to their softer side like Janie’s Got a Gun, Amazing, Crazy and of course, the obligatory I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.

As a bonus, the compilation features two previously unreleased tracks, Sedona Sunrise and Devil’s Got a New Disguise, the former a ballad-like tune and the latter a straightforward rock number. For what it’s worth, both are decent tracks, and won’t disappoint.

Even with the addition of two new tracks, ardent fans will criticise that this is not representative of the true Aerosmith. It’s mostly a matter of omission – insufficient tracks or inappropriate selection of them. For the Aerosmith newbie, however, having 16 definitive hits plus two new tunes on a single disc, running for just under 80 minutes represents excellent value for money.

So if you’re looking for a definitive compilation of Aerosmith tunes (and not just the hits), this album’s not for you – unless you can’t resist the lure of the two new tracks, that is. Otherwise, get a grip on this one.

Aerosmith Update: David Hull returns to reality

Tabloidbaby.blogspot.com
December 17, 2006

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

From the James Montgomery Band website:

Dec 29 Chan's
Woonsocket, RI
David Hull rejoins the band after 3 months as Aerosmith's bassist! Welcome back Dave! The most venerable blues and jazz club in all the Northeast. Great dinner and great music. The crowd here is the best! "We play to the crowd more here than any other place we play," says James. Come down and experience it personally!

The rock’n’roll Cinderfella success story of the year is winding to a close, and the local hero rock star of Tabloid Baby’s teenage years is returning to the trenches after a season at the top.

For a few months now, we've been following the amazing comeback of David Hull, Seventies rock star turned journeyman musician, to whom fate handed an incredible second coming in September when he was recruited to play with Aerosmith on the band's Route of All Evil tour.

We first knew David Hull more than thirty five years. It was Southern Connecticut. We must have been 14. He was the cousin of our best friend Brian Butler, a few years older and the rock star we all wanted to be. He made records with Buddy Miles and Arthur Lee, jammed with Hendrix, and had planned to start a band with Steven Tyler before returning home victorious with White Chocolate and later The Dirty Angels, a trio and quartet that provided the bar band soundtrack of our Seventies. He gave us bass lessons when we were young, and when we were older and had traded guitars for the journo life while moving the punk scene with our Connecticut pals Tom Hearn and Legs McNeil, we wrote about his band and records.

David Hull’s Aerosmith connections stuck through the years. The Dirty Angels opened for Aerosmith in their late Seventies burnout years, and he played bass with the Joe Perry Project when Joe wandered off on its own.

Over the past 25 years, he’s been based in Boston, playing with a variety of rock, pop and blues bands, back in the bars and small clubs, still socializing with the guys from Aerosmith but apparently content in his role as a journeyman who’d reached for the brass ring and almost made it. When he was young.

And then, this summer, opportunity knocked. Aerosmith was headed off on a fall tour with Motley Crue, but bass player Tom Hamilton, a fan favorite, couldn’t make it because he was being treated for throat cancer. The show would go on, and David Hull got the call to fill in. Another chance at rock stardom, years after it seemed to be in his past. In his 50s!

Suddenly, this rock pro who hadn’t played to arenas full of screaming fans since the Seventies, was being plucked from the clubs and bars of New England where he’d been playing with local hero James Montgomery. Aerosmith management assured the fans it would only be for a month or so, that Tom was on the mend and would be back soon. David did a crash course on the Aerosmith songbook, worked for weeks getting into the groove with drummer Joey Kramer, getting his hair in shape. He made his debut on September 5th in Ohio. Onstage, he laid back. He knew whose shoes he was filling and the possible fan backlash that could rival the reaction when Ringo took over for Pete Best. But as weeks turned to months, and it became clear that Tom’s condition was worse than let on, David's reputation as a good guy and longtime compatriot added to the goodwill. He loosened up, started looking like a rock star again. The fans accepted him. And what would otherwise be seen as sacrilege-- playing the classic opening bassline of Sweet Emotion-- was heard as a tribute from an old friend.

He'd even inspire his own subgroup of fans known as FOD: “Followers of Dave.” And he played the entire tour, which wraps up tonight at the Arco Arena in Sacramento.

The members of Aerosmith wlll scatter to their own private rock star corners of the world for winter vacations. For David Hull, it's back to work. He'll will rejoin The James Montgomery Band, beginning at Chan’s Chinese restaurant and jazz club in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Not quite the Arco Arena....

Start off 2007 with some live music

The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, TX
January 3, 2007

Aerosmith completed its co-headlining tour with Motley Crue in December and after a brief holiday break will head to the studio to record a new CD. It will be their first studio album since 2004’s “Honkin’ on Bobo.”

In addition to material from outside songwriters, they also are looking in their archives.

“There’s some stuff we left off certain records that we’ve been scratching our heads over why that happened,” guitarist Joe Perry said in a recent press release. “There’s also bits and pieces of things from ‘Honkin’ on Bobo’ that never got finished. We want to bring some of the elements of the experimenting we’ve done on the albums over the last few years and mash that in with that ‘Honkin’ on Bobo’ energy. Some songs are still two riffs and a chorus but they’re classic Aerosmith; a guitar riff and the vocals and the slammin’ rhythm section. Some of the material could have been written last week or 10 or 20 years ago. Some of it has bell-bottoms and big hair but it’s surprising how well it fits today’s playlists.”

This past year was a tough one for the band with bassist Tom Hamilton battling throat cancer and vocalist Steven Tyler having throat surgery and battling hepatitis C. Everyone’s healthy now, so the Boston bad boys are back in the saddle.

More: The Best of 2006

Excerpts:

Singing the praises of 2006's concerts - The Best
Calgary Herald, Canada - January 02, 2007

"Aerosmith - (Dec. 11, Saddledome) - With Steven Tyler fresh from throat surgery and the band getting up in years, one had to wonder if Aerosmith could still deliver like the arena rock animals they're supposed to be. They can, and they did, playing a stripped down, back-to-the-basics show heavy on their blues-based roots rather than the lame radio-ready ballads they cranked out in the '90s. Aerosmith's greatness was highlighted by how decisively they thumped Motley Crue, with whom they were sharing the bill."

Change is good - When it comes to northern Nevada entertainment ...
The Sacramento Bee, CA - December 24, 2006

"The performance by Aerosmith at the Reno Events Center on Dec. 15 was strong evidence that the northern Nevada area is no longer your father's casino town. It is now on the circuit for some of the country's biggest tours (both the Who and Rod Stewart arrive early next year), and the events center has learned to accommodate them. The high-tech Aerosmith concert went off without a glitch, and the sold-out crowd was as ecstatic as the band was electrifying. It was easily the concert of the year.

Reno needs more of the same..."

The Best of 2006

Excerpts:

Edmonton's best concerts of '06
Jam! Showbiz, Canada - December 31, 2006

"Some of the biggest and most legendary names in music made their way to Edmonton this year. So big and so legendary, in fact, that many of them could dispense with doing interviews to help sell their shows. The names alone of artists like Elton John, the Who, Aerosmith, Motley Crue, Alan Jackson and many others still carry enough cachet and clout to put bums in seats."

Pop Music stories of the year
St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MO - December 31, 2006

"Chuck Berry turned 80, with bashes at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room that included a guest appearance by Aerosmith's Joe Perry, and a private fete at the Pin-Up Bowl."

High and low notes of 2006
Victoria Advocate, TX - December 29, 2006

"My favorite concert of the year is a tie between Elton John's performance at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and catching the Motley Crue/Aerosmith concert in San Antonio. Ironically, all three artists were favorites of mine over 20 years ago and they are still going strong today. Either way, it was a fitting way to end 2006 with a bang and make me look forward to another 12 months of music in 2007."

Looking back on a year in music
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, NY - December 28, 2006

Aerosmith at Darien Lake, Sept. 13: "Steven Tyler and Joe Perry sat on stools for a resurrection of 'Seasons of Wither,' accompanied by a fake snowfall that was almost a blizzard. Twenty years ago, you might have suspected that was cocaine, but it turned out to be only soap bubbles."

We got Stone'd and Wolfmother'd
Vancouver Province, Canada - December 26, 2006

Aerosmith, GM Place: "What can I say. It was the year when dinosaurs roamed the Earth and made it shudder. Proving once and for all that it is one of the finest American bands ever, the 'Smith ripped through a setlist that left those repetitive power ballads behind and concentrated on the quintet's finer blues 'n' metal moments. The show was a master class in, well, class for all those wannabees out there."
