Original Stone May Roll Into Grammys
January 31, 2006
It seems like the rumors may be true this time. But we're not laying any bets yet.
Still, the much-hyped reports of a Sly Stone appearance/performance/sighting/
emergence from obscurity at next week's Grammys appears to be true. A member of the original Family Stone told the Times the whole original band is planning on being there, the first time they've been together in more than a decade, though he declined to say whether they'd perform.
Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler told the Times on Tuesday that, as far as he knows, he and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry are slated to perform with Stone and others during the scheduled Sly and the Grammys' Family Stone tribute. But he admitted to not having a lot of details.
The awards show will be broadcast from Los Angeles on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. on Channel 13 and 8 p.m. on Channel 5....

Joe Perry: Telephone Interview
Denver Post, CO
January 29, 2006
Aerosmith Still Soars
Aerosmith's origins are endearing. Steven Tyler, originally a drummer, met Joe Perry at an ice cream shop in Sunapee, N.H.
The band's legacy is impressive. Aerosmith was one of the biggest rock bands from one of the biggest rock decades, the '70s. It also enjoyed huge success in the 1980s.
But the reality of Aerosmith... is problematic for serious music fans. Some bands know when to say when. They know it's more than a little sad to play songs in middle-age that the band wrote when they were strutting twentysomethings. Yet it still works. In big numbers, even.
Aerosmith's durability surprises even Joe Perry, the band's guitarist and an icon in his own right.
"This Aerosmith thing constantly blows my mind, and it does the other guys' too, that we're able to carry on like this," Perry said recently via telephone. "It's been interesting, this classic rock swelling up underneath all the pop stuff that's going on. I don't know, there's something about good music - and it isn't just that I have a soft spot in my heart for those songs that I grew up with, that I cut my musical teeth on."
Aerosmith circa 2006 doesn't sound the same - listen to current recordings of their 30-year-old songs including "Dream On," "Walk This Way" or "Sweet Emotion" - and the members definitely don't look the same.
And what of the new music: Is it important enough, adding to its legacy in such a way that it justifies being made? They answered that question with the abominably named "Honkin' on Bobo," the band's alleged blues record from 2004 that was received with less enthusiasm than either of the band's last two live records.
On the live-music front, the band still sells out arenas. Is it Aerosmith's time to launch another tour? Or is it Aerosmith's time to say goodbye?
Perry says absolutely no to the latter, and nostalgia-hungry fans who have helped this tour sell out nationwide are in overwhelming agreement with him.
"I've never been in any other band, so I can't say why they stayed together or why they didn't, but I know that everybody here gives the best they can from night to night," Perry said. "It all ties in with the whole idea about being together for 35 years and how come we're still out there and playing. It's a legacy, and we have a certain amount of respect for that - and a lot of respect for our fans who have supported us throughout the years."
Fanning the flames
The fan support has been tremendous. And the band's ability to get along is remarkable.
"It still has its bumps and grinds, and we still have our arguments about stuff, but they seem a lot further apart," Perry said. "We still have a bigger mountain to climb, and that's keeping the band strong and keeping the music strong. And that hasn't changed in 30 years. We're constantly trying to play a better show than the one last night."
An admirable sentiment, but when you've been around for 35 years and honestly believe every show can be better than the previous one, you're a tad delusional. That's physically and musically impossible.
Still, Aerosmith has come a long way, and the band does have an unmatched legacy of brash rock 'n' roll and loud power-ballads - amid American bands, at least. The group came out of the gate strong in 1973, making seven potent records in seven years. The group stumbled into a druggy haze in the early '80s but hauled itself off the mat for what was, at the time, the greatest rock 'n' roll comeback story ever told.
The late '80s were kind to the band, and it sold more records than ever. The '90s were solid, with a massive soundtrack hit courtesy of the 1998 blockbuster "Armageddon." While its records aren't performing as they once did, the band - almost inexplicably - continues to sell well on tour.
Or maybe the band's enduring live popularity can be explained.
"You still have to go out and prove to the audience that you're worth the money they paid to see you," Perry said. "We managed to keep up with the technology, so the fans really get the whole thing - the lights and sound - and everything is better than it used to be.
"They don't want to watch people falling down, and nor do I. If I go see a band, I don't give a (expletive) about the personal problems. I paid my money. All it took for me to realize this was putting myself in their seat for three seconds and I saw, 'This has to be good.' "
The other harmony
The working relationships inside the band mean better organization, Perry said, and ultimately better shows.
"There's a lot less ego involved," he said. "Speaking for myself, I'm a lot less inclined to slam my point home. You know what I mean: There's a lot more parity amongst the band members as far as working things out, and everybody's got their strengths and weaknesses, and we all recognize them for what they are and it makes it a lot easier to make decisions and work together creatively.
"There are times where we're sitting in the room going over stuff, deciding on dates on a tour or talking about the color of T-shirts, and I swear it could have been 30 years ago," he said. "It's the same people, and when you feel those feelings about what the band is as a touchstone, it seems timeless. In our personal lives, we all have our own system for making it work, but as the five guys putting it together and playing rock 'n' roll, we do all that together."
In his months away from the band, Perry relishes time with his family in homes in Vermont and Florida. He says his life outside the band is crucial to his sanity. "It's so fleeting, this lifestyle," Perry said. "To hang your life on it is certain death."
The rock star must be left back on stage, Perry said, so he can fill other roles, including dad - his proudest title.
When it's time to rehearse or record, Perry and their bandmates head to Boston ... "and it's like we're still those 18-year old kids in the garage."
The current top headline on Aerosmith's website isn't about a band achievement, rather Perry's individual triumph: a Grammy nomination for rock instrumental performance. His track "Mercy" was the final song on last year's eponymous solo record, his first in more than 20 years. He's up against the likes of Stewart Copeland, Steve Vai and Les Paul for the Grammy.
"It really hit me sideways," Perry said of the nomination, noting that "Mercy" wasn't even a single. But it's what he said about the solo album that proves his musical dedication.
"With the solo record, I had a pile of music I felt I had to get out there," he said. "And it was a different set of circumstances than the solo record I put out 20 years ago. (This one) was from loving and recording music and playing my guitar and putting it out there, and that still burns inside for me ... It's still all there, intact, and it still blows my mind."

Reclusive funk-rock pioneer said to be discussing reunion on Grammy show, which plans tribute
Sly Stone, the reclusive, long-vanished funk-rock pioneer whose potent recordings in the late 1960s and early '70s altered the course of popular music, may be about to strut back into the public eye. Diary - January 27
The show in Dallas is massive and packed to the roof. Len is feeling better and graces us with his presence - a kind man, letting love rule etc. The Motor City Madman is backstage, Ted Nugent - seems he has relocated from the Motor City to Dallas to be with his chosen tribe, The Republicans! Ted invites himself onstage to play. He wanted to play Baby Please Don't Go but they settled on Train. I enjoyed Ted more than Rick Nielsen but then again I am a metal fan. Disappointingly they didn't finish with Stranglehold. Got some nice pics of Ted and Joe in Joe's inner sanctum. Managed to get back before the end and shot Joe before he came off stage. Steven brought his son Taj out to sing Happy Birthday - Chelsea and Mia were also on hand for the festivities.
I'm heading home tomorrow to sunny England. Rock 'n Roll Johnny B is heading with the Cowboys to Brokeback, Denver - home of the Cowboys or Broncos. We meet for a farewell drink in the bar. I had a pint of lager and he had something pink with an umbrella in it. He looks rather strange in his cowboy hat and spurs but oddly enough fits right in here. All friendly...
Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz Work the Crowd at AAC
The Dallas Morning News, TX
January 28, 2006
They're a generation apart, but Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz are perfect tour mates, since they draw from the exact same well of blues, funk and metal.
Mr. Kravitz, the opener Friday at a sold-out American Airlines Center, introduced his riff-heavy "Always on the Run" as "Steven Tyler's favorite song," and it was easy to hear why: It could have passed for an outtake from Aerosmith's Toys in the Attic.
Both acts owed a debt or three to the Beatles: Aerosmith opened its set with a rabid version of "Helter Skelter," while Mr. Kravitz closed his with the Lennon-esque "Let Love Rule."
And while Aerosmith's most recent big hit was the wimpy 1998 ballad "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," it focused on snarling blues Friday and followed "Thing" with a "Baby Please Don't Go," the ultimate case of saccharine followed by Tabasco. "Baby" made way for "Train Kept a Rollin'," with surprise guest Ted Nugent. As the Nuge and Joe Perry locked horns in a furious guitar-solo contest, it felt like a flashback from some long-gone Texxas Jam.
Mr. Perry – Keith Richards to Steven Tyler's Mick Jagger – grabbed the spotlight more often than usual, singing "Stop Messing Around" and "Shakin' My Cage," a blitzkrieg boogie from his new solo CD. He's not much of a singer, but he's still one of rock's saltiest guitarists – and not a bad theremin player either, judging from his solo in the middle of "Sweet Emotion" that threatened to break into "Whole Lotta Love" at any moment.
Still, the stage belonged to Mr. Tyler. At 57, he's not as acrobatic as he used to be (knee surgery will do that to you), but he's still a marvel, constantly twirling and hopping and galloping down a pair of stage wings that extended 25 rows across the main floor.
Mr. Kravitz spanned his career in a 65-minute set, starting with "Lady," his lyrically atrocious ode to Nicole Kidman, and ending with "Are You Gonna Go My Way." In between, he showed his knack for groovy singalongs ("Fly Away," "Dig In") while showing off his top-notch eight-piece band. Newcomer Trombone Shorty from New Orleans got huge applause, but the most valuable player was longtime guitarist Craig Ross, who lit into one jagged solo after the next.
Like a gracious guest, Mr. Kravitz lauded Aerosmith as "beautiful human beings ... and musically, so incredible." But like most opening acts, he didn't get to use his host's video screen or stage wings. He worked the joint into a frenzy anyway, jumping offstage in "Let Love Rule" and shaking hands and hugging fans like a politician on election day.
When you work a crowd as well as this guy does, who needs a stinkin' video screen?
Same Old Song and Dance For Rockers
Fort Worth Star-Telegram, TX
January 28, 2006
The American Airlines Center was packed to the rafters -- including seats sold behind the stage -- Friday night for Aerosmith and "co-headliner" Lenny Kravitz.
The show was originally sold as an "in-the-round" event, but try telling that to the folks who paid $150 a ticket to watch the band from the back.
Meanwhile, vendors trolled the floor as if at a sporting event, peddling $5 flashing pins and $12 disposable cameras.
Both acts were hawking dated CDs: Aerosmith's 2005 Rockin the Joint and Kravitz's '04 Baptism.
Kravitz brought along an eight-piece backup band, and Aerosmith had a fancy stage, with platforms and a plastic ramp that jutted out into the audience.
Otherwise, this was a bare-bones -- though entertaining -- rock show.
Aerosmith opened with an odd choice, a cover of the Beatles' Helter Skelter, with singer Steven Tyler hugging the microphone in oversized sunglasses and patchwork denim jeans, and guitarist Joe Perry in a black cowboy hat and matching duster.
The ensuing 90-minute set proved to be an obvious albeit satisfying parade of vintage cuts, from Walk This Way to Dream On to Back in the Saddle. Everyone on the planet has heard these songs (or seen the videos), but Aerosmith delivered them with crusty enthusiasm.
For anyone who owned the '74 release Get Your Wings, the high point of the concert was the band's rendition of Seasons of Wither, a beautiful if understated song distinguished by Perry's hypnotically chiming guitar.
Kravitz' set was a languid groove with lots of extended jams and what seemed to be vampy, though not unpleasant, filler. He padded Mama Said with an introduction of the band members. During Let Love Rule, Kravitz strolled through the arena shaking hands and lingering long enough for audience members to point their camera cellphones.

Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz
The Dallas Morning News, TX
January 27, 2006
Aerosmith debuted in 1973 and Lenny Kravitz not until '89, but stylistically, they're cut from the same tattered denim: Both rely on blues-based, riff-oriented, hook-laden rawk and roll. So it's no surprise to see they're now touring together. Aerosmith, which closes the show tonight, recently released Rockin' the Joint, a live album that shows the band still has plenty of snarl and swagger....

Diary - January 26
Flew with the band to a very cold Dallas. Shot Steven, who was resting his voice.
Kazuyo asked who the polite person was that I'd shot with Joe last night - it was Eric Johnson, who was so polite I'd forgotten I'd even taken a picture of him...
Going out for a sedate evening meal with John, in our cowboy hats - all friendly.
January 25
Went to bed earlyish - 12.30 - and still woke up at 7am... Meeting Rock 'n Roll John B for breakfast. A nice warm, sunny day. I hear it's nice in England - minus ten degrees...
Show tonight in San Antonio, I haven't been to a show here in... I honestly can't remember. I used to come here all the time in the '80s. I think it's maybe fifteen years.
Lenny Kravitz has cancelled, again - poor 'ole Len's feeling poorly. So Aerosmith add some songs - Kings And Queens, and an impromptu Think About It, plus Stop Messing (which I'm bored with, but the 'smiths love old Peter Green). Good to see them play stuff you don't expect. Did a good shoot with Joe Perry before he went on - he always looks cool... Joe wanted to do more when he came off all sweaty, but it took me ages to get through the crowd - by then he'd changed back to normal (whatever normal is). Rock 'n Roll John Bionelli insisted on taking a picture of me in Joe's hat. He must want it for his hotel room wall, next to Donny Shiteman - all friendly on the range....
January 24
Arrive at 3am. Can't sleep. As I'm jet-lagged, I am awake at 9am. Go out with a friend of mine, Spencer, record shopping. I'm too tired to enjoy it. Corner Steven at 5pm and make him go through photos - he's actually quite good, he knows what he likes....
January 23
Off to Houston. Why is it the only flights I can get on are at dawn? Arrive into Houston at midday. It is overcast and cold - every time I come here is the same. Boring day, hanging out at the show. At least the Aerosmith crew are all nice. The band arrive at around 6.30. Mainly shoot Steven backstage. Rock'n Roll John Bionelli insists on doing pictures with me, holding a red rose in his mouth. I'll get them up soon - all friendly. Don't enjoy the show, the audience are aggressive and drunk. There is nothing less fun than a sad, middle-aged drunk. Kazuyo, my assistant, is politely asking people to move out of the way and is told "Go f*ck yourself". Nice manners - in the south... Fly to San Antonio after the show with the band....
Aerosmith Brings Rock 'N' Roll Drama to AT&T Center
San Antonio Express News, TX
January 26, 2006
Steven Tyler and Aerosmith perform Wednesday night at the AT&T Center.
Bahram Mark Sobhani/Express-News
Same old song and dance? Who cares?
This is Aerosmith after all, the American version of the Rolling Stones that continues to gather no moss since rolling out of Boston in the early '70s.
We still love that dirty water served up by the much cleaned up band led by singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry, as evidenced at a nearly sold out show at AT&T Center on Wednesday.
About the only down side was co-headliner Lenny Kravitz's no-show due to illness – or at least that was the official reason given.
Some fans, like attorney Chance McGhee, weren't too pleased.
“I'm bummed,” McGhee said. He spent $425 on tickets for himself and his wife.
“My wife and I love Lenny Kravitz – we were thinking Aerosmith was a bonus.” The San Antonio lawyer expressed his doubts about the reason for Kravitz's cancellation announced late Wednesday.
“I think Kravitz is hung over or got into a fight with Aerosmith,” McGhee, 39, said.
Local heroes Sexto Sol filled in admirably, doing their Santana thing that earned a shout out from Tyler.
Rock 'n' roll drama was alive and well this night — so was the fun.
“There's some crazy (expletive) in here,” Tyler said at one point. Moments later, an overheated female fan climbed onto the catwalk to get close to the bad-boy sex symbol (and prove his point). It was one of several instances of security lapses that led to grope 'n' roll.
Other highlights: Tom Hamilton's bass rumbling on cue for the famous intro to “Sweet Emotion.” The song captures the attention across generations.
And they were represented here — with fathers with backward baseball caps accompanying their young children, teenagers snapping photos with their cell phones and gray-headed dinosaurs grooving along to the beat – some motorcycle mamas, too.
Aerosmith opened its concert with the Beatles' “Helter Skelter,” Paul McCartney's infamous ode to a children's playground slide. The frenzied attitude of that distorted E-chord barrage prevailed throughout the show.
For his part, Perry played the man-in-black foil to Tyler's gypsy persona, especially with the on-fire “Baby Please Don't Go” and his own slide guitar blues spotlight.
“Livin' On the Edge” best personifies this band's attitude and ability to survive and call it like it is: “Something's wrong with the world today and everybody knows it's (expletive),” Tyler sang, messing with the verse. But as long as Tyler's still able to miraculously scream those high notes with the only enormous mouth that rivals Mick Jagger's, things ain't so bad. Walk this way, indeed.

Aerosmith, Kravitz Relive The Past
Houston Chronicle, TX
January 24, 2006
Successful rock 'n' roll bands catch fire with a hit single or album early on and then spend the rest of their time chasing that success. Career rock 'n' roll bands are clever enough to realize that longevity lies in a fine balance between commitment to evolution and loyalty to past glories.
This was the Rock 101 lesson on display during the Lenny Kravitz-Aerosmith co-headlining set that took over a sold out Toyota Center Monday night. In 90 minutes it became evident why Aerosmith was able to emerge from the Rolling Stones' shadow and become one of America's greatest blues-rock outfits.
On the flip side, Houston saw the talented Kravitz battle himself and continue to be little more than a Jimi Hendrix knock-off.
These days a rock superstar's ego is measured by the size of its stage. Aerosmith was not about to be outdone by the the mini-skyscraper and jet-ready runways that the Rolling Stones and U2 packed onto the Toyota Center floor. The band's stage was a mix of both with a main deck that extended the width of the building, a two-story wall of LED-screens and strutting platforms for singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry that extended more than halfway into the floor seating.
Tyler and Co. spent the bulk of their 17-song set banging out the 12-bar based blues-rooted rock 'n' roll that was its trademark for the first half of its career before a mid-80s pop-rock makeover. The set highlight, however, was a pure Brit-rock masterpiece they stole from fellow legends, the Beatles.
In a pair of black-n-white striped pants that seemed borrowed from Quiet Riot's Kevin Dubrow, Tyler sang the Fab Four's Helter Skelter in a tortured howl that McCartney, Bono or any other past comers couldn't rival.
Aerosmith could have gotten away with a set of nothing but songs from its '70s beginnings and nearly did. Walk This Way, Same Old Song and Dance, Sweet Emotion and Dream On were played with a renewed adoration from the originators who took them for granted in the past. The nostalgic stream was only briefly interrupted for a leap forward in time to pop ballads Cryin' and What It Takes.
Tyler ventured into the middle of the floor during What It Takes and was pawed at by the masses. The sneaky frontman took the weakest link in the set list and made it one of the most memorable.
Kravitz is in dire need of some of Tyler's mojo. His voice was constricted from a bout with the flu, and his 11 songs seemed to be a drowsy dollop of NyQuil for everyone else. He gave piecemeal support to his latest album, 2004's Baptism, with competent renditions of the forgettable neo-soul of California and Lady.
By the time he got to the hits he'd already lost the crowd to the beer lines. His ace-in-the-hole, debut single Let Love Rule, was extended to a monotonous 20 minute jam and a cover of American Woman begged the question, "Why bother?" Kravitz entire career plays like a cover of American Woman.

Launch Radio Networks reports: Aerosmith gave the fans in Tampa, Florida, last week a special treat when they brought Cheap Trick's Robin Zander onstage. Zander joined Aerosmith on a cover version of The Beatles classic "Come Together", and he traded vocals with both Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. Thanks to modern technology, a fan was able to capture the performance, and the video is now online. To check it out, just go to YouTube.com and search for "Zander."
Aerosmith first recorded "Come Together" in 1978 for the film "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", in which they played the Future Villain Band. The song also came out that year on Aerosmith's "Live Bootleg" album.
Aerosmith and Cheap Trick are old friends, and they did a joint tour in 2004.

Aerosmith's Hard-Knock Rock
San Antonio Express, TX
January 19, 2006
It has been 19 years since he was drooling drunk, but Joe Perry still confesses a weakness for the sauce.
Calling from a tour stop in North Carolina, Aerosmith's chiseled-cheek, boogie-riff guitar hero is joking about his namesake brand of Rock Your World hot sauces. These days, the lean and clean 55-year-old rocker is more likely to slather his ribs than pickle his liver.
"Yeah, definitely," he says with a laugh. "I'll eat all the hot sauce I want, because it doesn't stop me from playing onstage (laughs). I've always gravitated toward (cooking), and I figured if I'm going to eat, I'm going to eat well. I've had my share of Burger King in the early days, but I can remember having these big cookouts at my parents' place and always making sure the steaks and hamburgers were just right.
"It must be my Mediterranean blood. I'm half Italian and half Portuguese and only one generation from the Old Country, so I'm sure that's a big part of it. The one thing I kind of get upset about though is when people bring their bottles (of hot sauce) for me to sign and they're still full."
Draining bottles is something Aerosmith did with death-defying frequency throughout the 1970s. More motley than Crüe, more toxic than Poison and packing more guns than roses, this Boston-baked train wreck set a staggering standard for bloodshot blackouts and coke-caked excess.
Done with smoke and mirrors, Perry lines up 30 years' worth of Aerosmith hits at the AT&T Center on Wednesday when he is joined by monkey-man vocalist Steven Tyler, co-guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer. Expect surprise rarities along with "Walk This Way," "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion."
Aerosmith is peddling its latest dual disc, "Rockin' The Joint — Live at the Hard Rock Hotel," which offers video and audio of an intimate 2002 Las Vegas performance in front of 3,000 lucky fans. The performance includes the long-lost gems "Seasons of Wither" and "No More, No More" alongside an old-school cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Rattlesnake Shake" and the first-ever live recording of the No.1 smash, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."
For his part, Perry is pushing his self-titled fourth solo album, which features a locked-tight cover of the Doors' "The Crystal Ship" along with Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man" and a host of original, blues-marinated shuffles, including the Grammy-nominated instrumental track, "Mercy."
The nomination "really hit me from the side," Perry says. "I've been living with that song for so long. It's one of those riffs I've wrung inside and out. I think I first laid it down 10 years ago as a potential song for Aerosmith. We tried rearranging it every which way in order to put vocals on it, and as it happens so often, sometimes the riffs are so strong on their own it's hard to find space for vocals."
By the late 1970s, Perry had a hard time finding space for the unholy madness consuming Aerosmith. A bona fide, stadium-sized monstrosity, Aerosmith was riding the rails to legend thanks to the smash success of the 1975 masterpiece album, "Toys in the Attic" and the subsequent releases, "Rocks," "Draw the Line" and the lesser-liked, 1979 death-knell, "Night in the Ruts."
Inevitably, Perry quit the band in a blinding black cloud of threatening violence, shouting and snorting. Whitford soon followed, leaving the respective parties to struggle for sanity and commercial viability.
"We'd been busting our asses making Aerosmith into what it was for 10 years, and we'd never really taken time off to clear our heads," Perry says. "The machine was bigger than us, and we should have just taken a year off.
"Instead, it blew up and we melted. There were some times when I'd get back to Boston after being on the road and my first marriage had broken up, where I'd move into one of those places where you pay $25 a week to live. It wasn't quite a homeless shelter, but it was a pretty hand-to-mouth existence. It was a really hard time leaving the shelter of Aerosmith, but I was gonna make my own way one way or another. It was a good lesson."
Another good lesson came in the shapely form of one Billie Paulette, a model whom Perry met during the video shoot for his 1983 song "Black Velvet Pants." Together, the couple steered toward sobriety and is today pushing 23 years of married bliss. Upon their meeting, Billie figured Perry was a long-haired, moonlighting rocker dude and had no idea he was adored by zillions of Aerosmith fans.
"That's true," Perry recalls. "It didn't really sink in. She just paid it lip service and said, 'yeah, yeah, yeah.' Then she realized we had songs on the radio, and I think she was going through some of my old stuff and found boxes of old magazine clippings and stuff. She realized that we were indeed a stadium act."
Enshrined in 2001 in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and having sold more than 100 million albums, the all-original brotherhood of Aerosmith is today richer in more ways than money. Asked if Aerosmith will get back to the swaggering, innuendo-driven songwriting genius of Tyler and Perry minus the outside hit makers, the guitarist hints at hope.
"That's what we've been talking about doing for the next record, but it's hard to set rules," Perry says. Begged further on behalf of hard-core fans, a humble Perry gives some ground.
"It's nice to hear that," he says of the gushing. "If you can put that down in writing and I can hand it out to the boys, we might have something."

Let's Go See The Elephant
We have been based in Florida for the better part of 2 weeks now. The shows have been great and, hell, they have put "Kings and Queens" in set for two nights in a row. When we were in Atlanta I was going over the setlist and Joe blurted out, "Let's do Kings and Queens," to Steven and he said, "Let's do it!" so I told Brad, Tom and Joey while they were warming up literally 15 minutes before showtime. Almost immediately Tom reaches for his CD's and pops in Draw the Line. The three of them listened to the song once and nailed it. This song is one of those chestnuts you don't get to hear that often so it felt extra special this night. I remember they played it at Donington in '94 and really butchered it but... tonight it was like butter. The guys love playing in Atlanta. It was one of the first cities to really embrace rock music and Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom was the place to play. I don't know what went on back then but it always puts a smile on their faces when that name is mentioned.
The guys taped a segment for the Today show in Atlanta too. It airs this Thursday morning - early - so be sure to check it out. It's all about how a rock show gets put up - how it works. The road crew have to load into the venue as the sun is coming up and don't finish load-out until after you guys have been asleep for a few hours after coming home from the show. The men in black put in some serious hours. They are the ultimate professionals and I tip my hat to them.
Jacksonville, FL, was fun because the NE Patriots were playing Jacksonville at home in Foxboro while Aerosmith was playing in Jacksonville. Tom and Brad were watching the game right up until showtime. During the encore the guys were told the score and that the Pats had won. I asked Production Manager, Charlie Hernandez, if we should post the final score on the screens and he looked at me with a bewildered glare and said "What are you f%&kin' crazy?" Ah, but the joy of winning that game came to a crushing halt as the following week they got defeated by the Bronco's in Denver. It was a great run for a great team. I am now rooting for Pittsburgh because their coach looks like he could pop a vein at any minute. I like his moxy!
On an off day Tom and Tour Coordinator, Donny Wightman, decided to kill an afternoon by attempting to play golf. They quickly got escorted off the 1st tee because of their attire. It seems Tom's camouflage shorts and albeit collared shirt with a nice skull and crossbones logo didn't meet the course's stuffy dress code. They then went to a casino where they were more in their element.
At the Tampa show, Cheap Trick lead crooner, Robin Zander, brought his silky voice to the St. Pete Times Forum. He came with Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, Jon Gruden. This hot-head is a great coach and he spent some time with the boys before they hit the stage. Robin joined the guys on Come Together. Earlier in the tour Rick Nielsen came up and jammed and if we pass through Nashville at some point I'm sure bassist, Tom Petersson, will get up on stage too but sadly I don't think Mr. Bun. Carlos will come out unless Aerosmith plays in his living room. Rick Nielsen has a great shirt that reads "Our Singer is better than Yours" but I think Joe Perry could wrestle him for it.
Unfortunately, after giving it a go at souncheck Lenny couldn't do the show because of throat problems. In his place was a girl named "Twinkle" who stepped in with only a grand piano and entertained the crowd. It must have been pretty intimidating but she passed with flying colors. Fingers crossed, Lenny should be back in Ft. Lauderdale.
Be sure to catch Joe Perry and his wife, Billie, on Animal Planet's show called "Trail Mix." It will take you to their Vermont home where they talk about their horses. It airs on Jan. 29th at 8pm EST.
Houston we have a problem: I just got word that old Ross Halfin will grace us with his presence in the great state of Texas. He's a ballbreaker but a hell of a good photographer and a fine human.
Speaking of fine humans - Charlie Hernandez is Employee of the Week! This guy has seen and done it all. When it comes to getting this mother-of-a-show up every night, he comes in with his boots on the ground and his coffee pot set on stun. He broke into this business by working at clubs in NYC. He has done The Clash on Broadway and got his road legs with Billy Squire. He's been with the Stones, a Beatle and everyone in between. I've had the great pleasure of working with him the past 5 years with Aerosmith and last summer on Ozz fest. He's a true gentleman!
See you on the road!

Aerosmith Tears Through Classic Set

Lenny Kravitz, struck down by illness, is unfortunately a no-show in the double bill with the rockers from Boston.
How's this for an exciting double bill: Lenny Kravitz opening for Aerosmith!
It sounded too good to be true. Unfortunately for the 14,056 fans who turned out Tuesday night at the St. Pete Times Forum, it was too good to be true.
Struck down by an ill-timed case of laryngitis, Kravitz turned out to be a no-show. In his place, an intrepid Sarasota vocalist introduced as Twinkle performed a fine mini-set of soulful numbers accompanying herself on a baby grand piano.
It was an admirable, well-received performance. But by the time a photographic collage of the headlining act began flashing on a giant video screen above the stage about 9:20 p.m., the audience was restless and ready for some rock 'n' roll.
Aerosmith was only too happy to oblige, coming out swinging with a thunderous version of the Beatles' Helter Skelter. Having established the tone for the evening, the hard-rock veterans wasted no time getting down to business, performing Walk This Way, Same Old Song and Dance and Cryin' in rapid succession.
That last number dates from the remarkable second chapter of the band's 30-plus-year existence. Long after drug problems and band dissension appeared to leave Aerosmith a spent force in the early '80s, the band caught a second wind thanks to hip-hop group Run DMC's 1986 cover of Walk This Way, which featured cameos by Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry.
Before long, Aerosmith was back on the scene again with a string of new hits that actually managed to surpass their earlier classics in terms of chart success.
The band performed some of those latter-day songs Tuesday night, including a sharp take on Livin' On the Edge. But make no mistake - it was Aerosmith's blues-drenched early material that established the band's legend as one of rock 'n' roll's most fearsome ensembles.
Now well into their fifties, Tyler, Perry, guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer were at their most vital when they tore through classic numbers like Mama Kin, Sweet Emotion, Train Kept A Rollin' and, best of all, a blistering performance of Back in the Saddle.
During an encore, Cheap Trick frontman Robin Zander made a surprise appearance to share vocal duties on a cover of Come Together.
Aerosmith finally closed out the evening with a rocking Draw the Line, helping support their publicists' claim that they are "America's Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band."

Aerosmith Offers Singer A Chance To Shine
Tampa Bay Online News, FL
January 18, 2006
It's the rock 'n' roll fantasy.
You're a struggling musician. Suddenly you get the call: The opening act can't go on. Aerosmith needs you to open the show.
That was the reality for Sarasota-based singer-songwriter Schascle Yochim, who performs under the stage name Twinkle.
With R&B singer Lenny Kravitz unable to open for the band Tuesday night at the St. Pete Times Forum, Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler escorted Yochim to center stage with his arm around her, told the crowd she was a great singer from the area who just toured with Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts and then unleashed her upon the crowd. (Tyler mentioned later onstage that Kravitz had laryngitis.)
The moment was reminiscent of Bernard Watson, whom rock promoter Bill Graham plucked from the parking lot in Philadelphia to open Live Aid there in 1985.
"How about we both take a deep breath together?" Yochim said with a trembling giggle before a 15-minute set filled with soft piano ballads showcasing her bluesy vocal range.
"I never thought I'd be opening for Aerosmith," she told the 14,056 people in the audience, who graciously applauded her brave effort. She wasn't Lenny, but that wasn't her fault.
It would be easy to forget that the supergroup she opened for once warmed crowds for Sha-Na-Na as they fought their way out of Boston.
These days their concerts are choked with hits known by millions, songs like "Sweet Emotion," "Dream On," "Walk This Way" and "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" that they performed Tuesday night with huge amounts of muscle and energy and theatrics as they prowled their forceps-shaped stage.
If you were at the show and you liked what you heard, Twinkle will be playing Jan. 27 at the Five O'Clock Club on Hillview Avenue in Sarasota
Tom Hamilton - Road Still Home For Aerosmith
Tampa Bay Online News, FL
Published: Jan 13, 2006
Bassist Tom Hamilton knows Aerosmith can't tour like road dogs forever. Just don't expect them to stop anytime soon.
"You get to the point where you're tired of [touring], but you still can't be away from it for long. That probably isn't a very healthy obsession," Hamilton says by telephone from Las Vegas, where he and his band mates are doing what he calls "miscellaneous promotional crap."
"In the future we probably won't tour as many months out of the year," says Hamilton, 54. "You start thinking about all the things you want to do in your life and realize you don't have unlimited time. We're at a point where we need to make serious decisions about how we want to live."
Hamilton and his band mates - drummer Joey Kramer, guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, and singer Steven Tyler - can discuss their future during their travel time between gigs. The group's current tour began in late October, and Hamilton says they'll stay on the road until April. Then they'll head out again this summer.
Aerosmith's latest CD is, fittingly, a live album: "Rockin' The Joint," released in October.
The album was taken from a 2002 show taped at a 1,500-seat Hard Rock Live venue in Las Vegas called The Joint.
In this relatively intimate setting and with the tapes rolling, Hamilton says the band decided to "play as many songs as we could barely remember."
"We figured if we play a great show, we have it in the can, and if we screw it up, it was only in front of 1,500 people," Hamilton says.
Some of Hamilton's band mates were grateful for the small crowd at show's end.
"I remember we left the stage and some of my fellow band members thought we had sucked," Hamilton says. "I thought we played really great."
Hamilton was proven right when the band finally got around to listening to the tapes.
"Once we dug the tapes out of the closet and listened to them, everyone else [in the band] was pleasantly surprised," Hamilton says.
Cuts that made the CD include great older numbers such as "Seasons of Wither" and "No More No More," as well as "Rattlesnake Shake," a chestnut from the Peter Green-era of Fleetwood Mac.
"That's one of the first songs [Aerosmith] ever learned," Hamilton says. "Joe and I had already been playing it in bands in high school."
Sitting somewhat uncomfortably in the midst of these loud, bluesy rockers on the disc (right between "Draw the Line" and "Big Ten Inch Record," as a matter of fact) is "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," the Diane Warren-penned ballad that gave Aerosmith its only No. 1 single.
"'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing' is like this angelic mermaid surrounded by sharks, wondering, 'Why am I here?'" Hamilton says with a laugh.

Steven Adler Metal Sludge
MS: Name the 3 high points and the 3 lowest points of your career to date?
SA: Okay, I’ll tell you the best, the best moment in my life, and the worst moments of my life. The best moment of my life was having sex with Stephen Tyler in the back of a tour bus. The worst moment of my life, was when the second time I did heroin was on the last show of the Aerosmith tour, and you know you had those meet n’ greet rooms. And, you know I opened up the door and I’m standing there in my rock star pose, all looking all cool and Stephan Tyler is like, 5, 10, 8 feet in front of me, talking with this girl laughing, and he looks up cause he noticed my presence. And he has the biggest smile on his face, and then he could just see in my eyes, that I did heroin, and he made the saddest face and umm… my heart just dropped, and I wanted to die right there.
Because Stephen Tyler is the greatest person in this whole world, and I love him, and there is nobody in the world like him, and I (pauses) hurt his feelings, and it just hurt me so bad. The best and the worst times were with Stephen Tyler. Greatest person in the world, there is nobody cooler, it, there is nobody cooler in any and every way, that person could be in this whole universe.
MS: The epitome of cool?
SA: Yeah, beyond, I mean, nobody comes close! I mean, I’m a cool motherfucker…but I’m on, you know on a scale of 1 to 10, I’m a 10 for a cool motherfucker but he is just peeked, a number like I say, there isn’t even a number for him. The greatest person I ever met. That was really sad that I disappointed him.

The old warehouse at 1712 Texas doesn't have a sign, and it gives no clue about the treasures contained inside. But the 12,000-square-foot building, about a block-and-a-half east of Cotton, is a veritable museum of 1800s-style Wild West gear -- holsters, shirts, suspender pants, overcoats, dusters and boots. The building houses El Pasoan Sebastian Ramirez's thriving business, Classic Old West Styles, which manufactures and sells historically accurate Old West gear to the movie industry, entertainers, historical re-enactors and sportsmen....
Rock band Aerosmith's guitarist Joe Perry frequently buys Ramirez's products to use at his ranch and on stage. "He calls almost every week just to talk," Ramirez said...

"Peelin' off my boots and chaps, I'm saddle sore. Four bits gets you time in the racks. I scream for more." History will no doubt be very kind to Aerosmith, if only for the band's tireless, never-ending tour of hip-thrusting classic rock 'n' roll. On their current jaunt, 57-year-old Steve Tyler & Co. are joined by opening act Lenny Kravitz, another man who never tires of randy guitar licks and arena-rock loudness. Buzz from the ongoing tour is that the acts have occasionally been playing a few tunes together. I'd like to see Kravitz take lead on Aerosmith's Back in the Saddle, and ax god Joe Perry tear up Lenny's Are You Gonna Go My Way.
Aerosmith, with Lenny Kravitz, rocks off at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, Tampa. $53.25-$123.25. (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100 or (813) 301-2500.

Joe Perry's Comments
ElvisNews.com
January 15, 2006
The January edition of Goldmine magazine features an interview with Aerosmith guitarist, Joe Perry. In the interview, Perry is asked about any favourite music artists that he has and below is his reply:
"Jimi Hendrix and Elvis. I love Elvis. It's not just the music, it's what he accomplished and what he did. Probably the most important thing he did was bring black music to white ears. I think that some of what he contributed to our culture and music gets lost in his later years, in the stereotypes. Most of the impersonators are doing the white jumpsuit [look] because he was such a caricature of himself, but he was so important in those early years that it's just a drag that it gets lost. People think about the glasses and the jumpsuit, but if it wasn't for him there is so much music that we wouldn't have heard.
He was the right voice at the right time, and it precipitated that whole social change in the '60s, bringing all that music and breaking down that barrier because black music was so taboo. It existed, but to break through that into the white stronghold on music, somebody had to do it, and he did it. He had the voice.
There were certainly other rockers, but they sounded white. That's why he scared the sh** out of people when he was coming around. People were expecting to see a black dude singing. Like I said, the right voice at the right time to do that.
You can't say enough about what he contributed. He laid the groundwork for breaking out, and the rest is history."

Back In The Saddle Again
Sarasota Herald-Tribune, FL
January 13, 2006
Longevity and Aerosmith have become almost synonymous. For more than three decades, the band has inculcated pop culture with its catch-phrase choruses and lyrical innuendos.
As music trends have arisen and evaporated, the iconic group has remained true to its original rock 'n' roll core. Somewhere in the quintet's armory is that elusive secret to not "selling out."
"I think part of following this path, this kind of a destiny almost, is trying to stay the same, trying to go with the flow and shake off the blows, and trying to maintain somewhat of an identity, and not feeling like you sold out," said lead guitarist Joe Perry in a phone interview en route to a Las Vegas concert.
"Any time you trade art for money, you're going to have to make some compromises. It's always a balancing act."
The acrobatics began in the early '70s, when five twentysomethings were jamming outside Boston University's student union. In 1973, they released a self-titled album featuring the single "Dream On," followed two years later by the multiplatinum album "Toys in the Attic."
The latter feat marked Aerosmith's coming into its own, when Perry, front man Steven Tyler, guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer found their collective sound.
"When it comes to extrapolating out a good song and having it sound original, that's the process any artist goes through to find their own voice," Perry said. "I think 'Toys in the Attic' really was the first record where we found it.
"It's a long process. You learn as you go, and you kind of figure out what it is about rock 'n' roll that you really like."
Learning as he went, fumbling at times, Perry made a move in 1979 that he would grow to regret. He left Aerosmith and was replaced by Jimmy Crespo, became estranged from Tyler and delved into the tepidly received Joe Perry Project.
"We really burned some bridges at the end of the '70s. If we had taken a sabbatical, if we could have taken a vacation instead of broken up, we would have lasted much longer at that time," Perry said.
"Knowing when to pull the plug is really important. That's probably the biggest mistake we've made. Now we all have the same goal ahead of us. Sometimes we get into the petty stuff, but nothing like it used to be."
Perry returned in the mid-'80s, and Aerosmith skyrocketed to even bigger fame with a slew of hits, from a remake of "Walk This Way" as a rock/rap collaboration with Run-DMC to "Rag Doll" and "Dude Looks Like a Lady." "Pump" became one of the most memorable records of the first MTV decade.
"I think there are times when trends come and go, and you kind of have to lay low for a while and really pay homage to your hard-core fans who support you through those periods, and don't forget them when you swing into fashion," Perry said. "I know how hard it is to make it in this business, how hard it is to stay there. You've got to give the fans 100 percent."
Often these days, the members don't even see one another until they arrive onstage. But the dynamic among the middle-aged bunch is as electrically charged as ever.
In 2001, Aerosmith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. A year later, its latest CD, "Rockin' the Joint," was recorded at The Joint in the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel.
The DualDisc CD/DVD features 11 songs, including "Seasons of Wither" from 1974's "Get Your Wings"; "No More No More," an obscure track from "Toys in the Attic"; and a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Rattlesnake Shake."
There are also live debuts of "Beyond Beautiful" and "Light Inside" from 2001's "Just Push Play," and DVD-only tracks of "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion."
Crowds have witnessed these renditions since Aerosmith began its "Rockin' the Joint" tour with special guest Lenny Kravitz. Once the tour concludes, Aerosmith plans to retreat to the studio to record another album.
Perry also owns a condo on Longboat Key, where he lives part time with his wife, Billie, a Sarasota High School alumna. While in town, he frequents the Hollywood 20, "the best theater anywhere," he said, and St. Armands Circle.
In his off time, Perry's writing and fondly ruminating on his years in Aerosmith -- where they're going, where they've been.
"All the stuff we've hoped to do, we've done. I think the exciting thing is just wondering what's going to happen next," he said. "There just aren't many bands out there that have come this far with the same guys, the same lineup. ...
"We're all interested to see how far we can take it."

Review: Aerosmith, Kravitz Work The Faves
Charlotte Observer, NC
January 13, 2006
Steven Tyler, lead singer for Aerosmith, performs during the Rockin'
the Joint tour at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena on Thursday.
(Yalonda M. James)
The spirit of '70s classic and '80s hard rock were alive and well at Bobcats Arena Thursday night as fans of rockers Aerosmith and Lenny Kravitz unpacked their old Aerosmith and Guns N' Roses' T-shirts (and a few afro wigs). Some women in the audience even donned updated, classier versions of scant groupie garb.
It was a stripped down affair for Kravitz, despite his gassed-up eight-piece band, compared to his church revival-like setup at Ovens Auditorium last spring where fans went completely wild for him. Many concert goers were still straggling in as he took the stage in fringe and denim around 7:45.
The set list was tailor-made for passing Kravitz fans. It included "Dig In," "Believe," "Can't Get You Off My Mind," and "Always on the Run." "Fly Away" found the crowd singing along.
"I'm not really into Lenny Kravitz, but I'm impressed with his show, especially the horn section," said Glenda Webster, an Aerosmith fan and teacher from Elkin, who got tickets for her 54th birthday.
Webster was elated when the Boston quintet hit the stage around 9:30 playing The Beatles' "Helter Skelter." Guitarist Joe Perry rocked an arsenal of effects pedals as Steven Tyler, in a near-translucent, white shirt and jeans that appeared glued on, worked the crowd from the catwalks that extended three-quarters of the way into the crowd.
At 57, Tyler still appears the ever energetic frontman, although he's no longer performing front handsprings on stage.
Although fans danced and cheered for songs like "Living on the Edge," the oldies were the ones that received the best response. Heavy hitters early on included "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way."

The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer was spotted buying a pair of cowboy boots at the Donald J Pliner store at the Forum Shops at Caesars on Sunday (Jan. 8). After telling the store's staff he was returning with friends on Monday, Kramer stopped by again with the entire band, including singer Steven Tyler, who bought a pair of boots as well. The next day, Tyler attended the Fashionistas show at Krave with a small group. On Wednesday, the singer rented a motorbike at the Harley-Davidson store on Eastern Ave.

Tap Into The Future
Winston-Salem Journal, NC
January 12, 2006
Back in the early 1970s, Aerosmith ruled American hard rock. At the time, few people would have thought that most of this notoriously drink-and-drug-fueled band (singer Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry were known as The Toxic Twins) would live to 2006, much less still be making music. The band became such a parody of itself that it heavily influenced director Rob Reiner's film 'This Is Spinal Tap,' a hilarious spoof of fading rock stardom. But survive they did - the clean and sober Aerosmith proved more popular than the falling-down version. The band's show at Charlotte Coliseum, with retro-rocker Lenny Kravitz, could be as potent as it is pro. Go figure.

Tuning Tech Catches On With Guitarists
TMCnet
January 11, 2006
No matter how accomplished they are, musicians who play fretted instruments spend a lot of time playing out of tune. Strings stretch and bind. Fluctuations in humidity and string tension cause instrument necks to bow, arch and twist. Something--it is not always clear what--throws string pitch out of whack. Professional players on stage and in recording sessions find themselves twisting tuner knobs between every song and sometimes in the middle of songs... Technology, it turns out, does offer a remedy for tuning problems--at least for those who play electric guitars. Backers and users of an electronic system called the Performer say it offers a big leap beyond the ubiquitous electronic pitch readers... Those attributes have helped sell the system to rock icons Graham Nash, Jimmy Page and Joe Perry, along with other concert-stage veterans.
With the touch of a button, The Performer is designed to automatically tune open, unfretted strings to whatever notes the player programs into the system's computer. The retuning can happen any time the player has a moment to strum on open strings, even in the middle of a song. It works via a system of sensors, computer electronics and miniature motors and mechanics designed for installation in the bodies of Fender's Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars, and Gibson USA's Les Paul...
TransPerformance's first client was Jimmy Page... "Sometime in '91, he
said, 'This is it.' He started playing it onstage," (Neil) Skinn said... The next customer was Aerosmith's Perry. Over the years, mostly through word of mouth, TransPerformance attracted avid amateur players and a fair number of other well-known professionals, including Tom Keifer (Cinderella), Mark Slaughter, Pat Metheny, Mick Fleetwood, Robert Hunter, Kenny Loggins, Eddie Van Halen, Peter Frampton, Sonny Landreth and young guitar phenom Matt Curran. Page now owns three guitars equipped with the system....

Joe Perry and the People That Believe
ContactMusic
January 10, 2006
Guitarist Joe Perry decided to quit Aerosmith in 1979 because he was so ashamed of his inability to honour the rockers' loyal fanbase.
The Sweet Emotion star, who rejoined the band five years later (84), was suffering from a well-publicised drug problem and was fed up with Aerosmith's unreliable behaviour letting people down.
He says, "There's a contract that you have with your audience that every band is sworn to.
"When someone out there works a nine to five job all week and they decide to spend the money that they've earned on your band then you have to deliver.
"Whether it's making an album or that person coming to see you in concert, you have an agreement with each other that they believe in you and you have to give them that reason to believe.
"At the end of the 1970s, we got really stupid and lazy. We were making mistakes that a band of our class shouldn't be making.
"We were breaking our contract with the people that believed in us and when you can't keep up your end of the bargain, then that's when you call it a day and that's exactly what I did."

Review: Aerosmith Rocks With Precision
Times-Union, FL
January 8, 2006
Aerosmith's lead singer, Steven Tyler, plays to the crowd during Saturday's performance at the Jacksonville Memorial Arena.
Don Burk/The Times-Union
I'm no expert on the aging process or anything, but if you're 50something years old, shouldn't you have, you know, a wrinkle? Somewhere?
Steven Tyler, prowling Veterans Memorial Arena on a series of through-the-crowd catwalks Saturday night, proved to hundreds of fans close-up that he's got skin at least as fine as that of Lindsay Lohan. Guess all those lines in his face really were getting clearer.
Fantastic skin care aside, the Aerosmith that played to a packed and sweaty house of people was the Aerosmith that many of them remembered -- taut, efficient, and without body fat, both physically and musically. The band was simply as professional as bands get without requiring a permit.
The challenge for Aerosmith, of course, is to continue to rock well into their fifth decade without serving up the same old song and dance. Saturday's set did this by two means: 1. Relying heavily on some unheralded corners of their catalog (Seasons of Wither, No More No More, S.O.S.), and 2. Injecting a little down-home boogie into their time-tested stuff (Walk This Way and Sweet Emotion both benefited from some added funk riffs courtesy of Joe Perry and Brad Whitford).
The band, it almost goes without saying, sounds great. Tyler has no business sounding as good as he does, and Perry's fingers fly with the energy of a man a third his age. Tyler worked up a good sweat on surprise opener Helter Skelter and Sweet Emotion, and Perry even took a crack at Shakin' My Cage off of last fall's solo record.
Sadly, the guys didn't leave Power Ballad Aerosmith at home, the one responsible for the band's 293 most recent power ballads, and Tyler delivered Livin' On The Edge like he was, with far more heavy breathing than you might expect from a song ostensibly about societal problems.
But at this point in their storied, 20-year resurgence, Aerosmith would have to work to turn in anything less than a solid, professional effort. This isn't a rock band, this is a perfectly tuned vintage Porsche, a mint condition Jim Rice rookie. You've been seeing it for 30 years, but it's still fun to look at.
For his part, Lenny Kravitz delivered an opening set that was even more efficient than the headliners'.
There was nary a Lenny-hit missed; Kravitz and his large band hit a slithery groove on Always On The Run, roared through simple but effective rockers like Dig In and Lady and quickly lit fire on the easily combustible Are You Gonna Go My Way.
Kravitz knew how to work it, too -- he went for a stroll through the crowd for his signature sermon, Let Love Rule, whipping up a spiritual vibe.

Aerosmith Guitarist to Re-Launch Hot Sauce
Online Rock Radio, Greece
January 07, 2006
Having trouble finding Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry's hot sauce these days? You're not alone. Perry told us that he and his partners are working on a new marketing campaign for his Rock Your World Bone Yard Brew, which will roll out with a splash soon:
"We're repackaging and we're putting out a new version, a new, updated version, new packaging, and then we're gonna start with other products."
Perry was not sure exactly when the Bone Yard Brew and other products would be back on the market. The guitarist launched Bone Yard Brew in 2003.
Aerosmith perform on Saturday, January 7th, in Jacksonville, Florida.
And from BraveWords.com
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry’s Rock Your World website (www.joeperrysrockyourworld.com), home of the original Boneyard Brew and Mango-Peach Tango hot sauces, has been updated with the following message:
“Coming soon, New bottles, New prices, New clothing, New labels, New site and a slick New image!” Stay tuned for further updates.

Thanks to devsrul4:
Hello everyone
Vince Neil is on the Opie and Anthony Show this afternoon. He just mentioned what the Crue would be up to in 2006, he mentioned a coheadlining tour with Aerosmith, probably for the summer.
Looks like this is a go.

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry in classic form as Aerosmith performs at
TD Waterhouse Centre in Orlando, Thursday, 01-05-06
(Jim Carchidi/Orlando Sentinel)
After all these years, there aren't many new wrinkles at an Aerosmith concert -- although a close look at Steven Tyler might reveal a few.
But who cares?
Tyler and Aerosmith returned to the TD Waterhouse Centre on Thursday and rocked the large, raucous crowd with the enthusiasm of a band half its age, and the swagger one might expect of a rock institution. As Tyler proclaimed in the early going, it was the same old song and dance.
Aerosmith does it well. The lasting charm of familiar radio staples such as "Walk This Way" and "Cryin'." has allowed Aerosmith to push beyond 1970s cliches into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On stage, the band still delivers them with over-the-top style, making good use of a mammoth, neon-lit horseshoe-shaped catwalk to shrink the arena and personalize the music.
It was a little odd for card-carrying Hall of Famers to begin with a Beatles cover, but "Helter Skelter" was well suited to Aerosmith's strengths: Tyler's larynx-shredding vocals and the wailing guitars of Joe Perry and Brad Whitford.
The song also was a good segue from the old-school rock and funk of Lenny Kravitz, who opened with a generous and uplifting set that lasted more than an hour. Accompanied by an eight-piece backing band, Kravitz strutted through a cocky "American Woman" and a marathon "Let Love Rule" that took him into the crowd for a big sing-along.
"I have a really, really good feeling about this year," Kravitz told the crowd, predicting that 2006 would be "a time for change, a time for love to bloom again."
Aerosmith, meanwhile, spent most of its 90-plus minutes looking back at its monster hits. Tyler worked the catwalk almost constantly, slapping high fives, mugging comically, kissing ladies half his age and even pulling one out of the crowd to dance with him on "Cryin'."
She was ready to prowl the catwalk with him, until a beefy roadie hoisted her off the ground and out of the spotlight.
Although less demonstrative, Perry exuded his own distinctive cool. He took the stage dressed like a Western gambler in a long black coat, ebony cowboy hat and knee-high leather boots accented with spurs. In an otherwise decent sound mix, Perry's vocals could have been louder in "Shakin' My Cage," the featured number from his 2005 solo album.
At least the mix was favorable to his terrific slide guitar, one of Perry's numerous instrumental highlights. When he and Whitford teamed for the intertwining twin guitar break in "Dream On," it matched the studio original.
That song also was a showcase for Tyler's voice, which still hits the high notes.
Same goes for Aerosmith, even if the band lost momentum in a ballad-heavy interlude anchored by the schmaltzy "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."
Otherwise, Aerosmith still rocks, but that's not surprising.

Happy New Year to everybody!
I figured out I slept in my own bed 22 days in 2005. This year looks to be just as busy. At the Milwaukee show old friend, Rick Nielsen, jumped up on stage to play “Train.” It kicked ass! Rick spent most of time before the show in Joe's dressing room jamming. Lenny also came by to give props to Rick. Our favorite shutterbug and postcard peddler, Ross Halfin, had his Nikon charged up and his finger on the trigger the whole night. He also threatened that he will be at the Fort Lauderdale and LA shows. I quiver with anticipation. I will put the kettle on for my favorite tea bag! Ross asked me why fans keep coming up to him at shows and pat him on the back and I told him it must be your sparkling personality. Joe and Brad went by the crew's catering room to check out the local cuisine and were impressed with the ice sculpture the chef made for the guys.
Detroit was rocking as usual. The band was presented with special plaques for selling out 12 shows at the Palace. It really is a home away from home for the guys. All of them spent the day off - before and after the show - Christmas shopping in the local town of Birmingham, MI. This is also the town where the band was holed up when the show with KISS was postponed due to the power failure a few years back. This time a mid-December blizzard threatens to cancel this show, but the gods were with us on this day and the show went off without a hitch.
The last show of the first leg was in Grand Rapids, MI and the band flew home immediately after the gig.
The second leg is now under way starting in the great state of Florida. Another home away from home as 3 of the guys have abodes there. Steven, Joe, Tom and Joey all spent some of the break in the Sunshine state and I got to ring in the New Year with Mickey and my family. As I wandered around Disney World I noticed all the characters being chased by young bambinos with their autograph books out clutching pens the size of baseball bats, their parents close behind with digital cameras out and ready. They are like rock stars to those kids. I heard one of them screaming “I just met Minnie, I have been a fan of hers for at least 4 years.”
This weeks “Employee of the Week” honors go to Mark Langley. He's Joe's bus driver and can always be counted on for getting us from point A to point B even if he goes via point C sometimes. He has been with such great people as Lenny Kravitz and Bill Ward from Black Sabbath but also has Insane Clown Posse on his resume.
See you on the Road!

Glam-bam classic rockers
Charlotte Observer, NC

Headliners such as Lenny Kravitz rarely take a back seat in the music biz, but when it comes to rock legends Aerosmith, Kravitz does just that, co-headlining their current arena tour.
The one-two punch of Kravitz and Aerosmith hits Charlotte Bobcats Arena on Thursday.
It's a fitting gig for Kravitz, whose oft retro-tipping guitar rock has always owed a heap to '60s and '70s classic rockers and his current tour mates.
The tour, which began at the end of October and runs through February, promises hit-packed sets from both acts. Kravitz isn't limited to a typical half-hour opening slot, even after spraining his ankle on the second show of the tour.
Graduating from the same school of rock, Kravitz and Aerosmith defied the odds, churning out hit after hit in a climate that often shunned old-fashioned rock 'n' roll in favor of the latest trend....
Although Tyler's reportedly donning patchwork jeans on the current tour, he, guitarist Joe Perry and the rest of the group have never shied away from skintight leathers, and, in Tyler's case, lace leggings. Aerosmith also gave scarf sales a boost - with Tyler tying them to his microphone stand as if it were a flagpole....
Chart-Toppers Round 1: "Dream On," "Walk This Way" charted in the Top 10 in 1976 and 1977 respectively. Others that are now considered classic such as "Sweet Emotion," "Back in the Saddle" and "Draw the Line" failed to crack the Top 30....
Chart-Toppers Round 2: Starting in 1987 with "(Dude) Looks Like a Lady," hits that followed include "Angel," "Love in an Elevator," "Janie's Got a Gun," "What it Takes," "Amazing," "Crazy," "Livin' on the Edge," "Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees)," "Pink," "I Don't Want to Miss A Thing," and "Jaded...."

Santana Positive About 2006
Online Rock Radio, Greece
January 3, 2006
Carlos Santana ends 2005 with another successful album release in All That I Am, which debuted at Number Two on the Billboard Top 200 chart in November. It's Santana's third set of all-star collaborations, but he told us that the album also conveys the spirit of positivity that the guitarist holds dear: "I walk away from this CD very proud because we created a consciousness that I believe the media needs, which is more of a positive perception about who we are instead of just running with the same fear, anger, suspicion, Halloween, and always criticizing and just seeing the darkness. You know we have to validate the light."
All That I Am features collaborations with Michelle Branch, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Los Lonely Boys, Mary J. Blige, Joss Stone, will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas, OutKast's Big Boi, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and others.
Santana returns to the road on March 9th, starting in South America and then moving to Europe. North American dates are expected for the late spring and summer.

Aerosmith & Lenny Kravitz in concert
January 5, 2006 - 7:30pm
America's Greatest Rock N' Roll Band, will turn up the temperature when they bring their “Rockin’ the Joint” tour to TD Waterhouse Centre, complete with their "inhibition-free, sweat-slicked rock 'n' roll" (Ian Fortnam, Classic Rock UK magazine). They have even come up with special staging for this tour whereby fans on the floor will have the chance to get up close and sweaty with the band who will perform on the ramps leading from the stage to the middle of the auditorium. This staging also ensures that everyone in the venue will have a better view of the performance. Aerosmith continues to be one of the most enduring and exciting forces in American rock music today. The band – Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), Brad Whitford (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass) and Joey Kramer (drums) – has obliterated the generation gap and has also spearheaded some of the most important trends in pop music with each new release-- from groundbreaking early 70’s heavy metal to the invention of the power-ballad to the first fusion of rock and hip hop. Aerosmith has not merely survived and thrived, they’ve transcended the trends, fads and follies of their times to become one of the most durable and perpetually exciting forces in popular music with countless awards, honors and accolades including grammy wins and being named a music icon by MTV. Along with Aerosmith, four-time Grammy award winner Lenny Kravitz’s high-octane set promises to be nothing short of extraordinary. Featuring his trademark combination of funk and rock n roll, the artist will play hit after hit from his expansive 15-year career, including his definitive classics "Fly Away," "Are You Gonna Go My Way, “Always on the Run,” "Dig In, Again” Where Are We Runnin” plus many, many more., Kravitz will be backed by his 10-piece band, ensuring that these one-time only shows are not to be missed.
Tickets for all TD Waterhouse Centre events may be purchased by visiting the TD Waterhouse Centre Box Office, online at Ticketmaster.com, all area Ticketmaster centers (FYE & Altamonte Mall) and by phone at 407.839.3900.
