At Your Survis!

All photos by John Bionelli

I walked into the studio on Monday only to find the place was picked clean, and I had this vision of Jim Survis (crew chief and head key keeper) with his trusty sideman Magee (drum tech and Jenny Craig poster boy) playing Grinch and Max, packing all the gear up.

Jim had Joe and Brad's cases all lined in a row,
these amps and these speakers are the first things to go.
Then he slithered and slunk with a smile most unpleasant
and yelled for Magee like he was some kind of peasant,
get Joey's drums, he yelled with a bark,
I want this truck packed up
before it gets dark!

Harmonicas, shakers, mic stands and drumsticks,
Wardrobe cases, Steven's scarves, hot sauces with picks!
Then in the truck went the stuff 'til no more would fit in.
Not even a crack for old cranky Halfin!
He finished his pack job without too much fuss
and said to the driver next stop Columbus!

Ah, that was so sweet, I put my coffee next to that story and I don't need to put any sugar in! People are always wondering about the setlist. Well I guarantee that the set will change as much as the Red Sox lineup lately. Right now it's looking like it will please the guy who swears he saw Aerosmith open up for Sha Na Na at Sufolk Downs in the early 70's to the young girls who think Permanent Vacation was the Bad Boys from Boston's first album. Close to 30 songs were rehearsed, and look for the set to consist of about 16-18 songs that will rotate almost nightly.

One of these things does not belong here!

Brad teaches David Hull "Last Child". Did you write that?

Steven belts it out!

Joe's son Tony is in 3 bands. One is a blues band called "The Sons of Blue's" and he has been playing around the South Shore of Boston these days. Joe pulled a Ted Nugent and joined the band for some Blue's classics and then played his fiddle with headliner James Montgomery last week.

Joe with Carter Allan

Joe also had Boston radio personality Carter Alan stop by the Boneyard last Tuesday. CA interviewed Joe for about an hour. The interview was broadcast on WZLX in Beantown and can be heard on their website and also on You Tube.

Krame Dog on the traps!

I spoke to Tom and he wants you all to know that he will be writing a little something soon, so be on the look out. He should be back in action around mid October.

See You on the Road!

John B.

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler To Appear On CBS-TV's "Two And A Half Men"

Blabbermouth.net, NY
August 31, 2006

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler will mark his return to television Monday, September 25 (9 PM ET/PT) where he'll play himself on CBS-TV's Emmy-nominated prime-time comedy series "Two And A Half Men", starring Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer. In the role, Steven appears as Charlie's famous Malibu neighbor, playing loud music and causing problems for Charlie. This is the second time Tyler will appear on the show, having done a voice-over as himself in 2003.

Tyler continues to establish himself as a film/TV presence after having already starred in an array of classic Aerosmith videos (such as "Crazy", "Walk This Way", "Janie's Got A Gun", "Living On The Edge" and "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing") that have been regarded as mini-movies. Tyler recently appeared in both the 2004 holiday blockbuster "The Polar Express" — as an animated version of himself — and in 2005's "Be Cool", alongside John Travolta and Uma Thurman. Tyler's acting credits also include "Goodnight, Joseph Parker" and "Clubland".

In addition to his film roles, Tyler has had many guest spots on television shows such as "Lizzie McGuire", "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons". He has also appeared in ads for The Gap and "Got Milk" and the popular Sony camera spot.

Aerosmith's songs have also been featured in numerous films including "Armageddon", "Airheads", "Charlie's Angels", "Dazed and Confused", "Last Action Hero", "Light of Day", "The Lost Boys", "Not Another Teen Movie", "Rugrats Go Wild!", "Starsky & Hutch", "Wayne's World 2" and "Mrs. Doubtfire".

The "Two And A Half Men" episode, titled "Who's Vod Kanockers", was directed by Gary Halvorson from a story by Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn, two of the series' executive producers, and a teleplay by Don Foster, Susan Beavers and Eddie Gorodetsky. The episode revolves around Sheen's character's brother Alan (played by Cryer), who feels guilty when he learns that Charlie and girlfriend, Mia, didn't tie the knot because she had wanted him and Alan's son Jake to move out. Meanwhile, Charlie and his rock star neighbor don't get along.

"Two and Half Men" is a comedy about men, women, sex, dating, divorce, mothers, single parenthood, sibling relations, surrogate families, money, and most importantly, love. More specifically, it's about the lives of two brothers, one brother's son, and the many women who surround them.

Aerosmith: 'Devil's Got a New Disguise' Artwork Available

Blabbermouth.net, NY
August 29, 2006

The cover artwork for Aerosmith's upcoming best-of collection, Devil's Got a New Disguise, has been posted online at this location. Due on October 10 via Columbia, Devil's Got a New Disguise takes its title from one of two new songs that will be included on the 16-track album. Perry described it as "a classic Aerosmith rocker," while the other fresh track, 'Sedona Sunrise', has been around for awhile and was considered for other Aerosmith albums. "We felt like it really had to come out," Perry told Billboard.com.

The rest of the set will be a "pared down" single-disc version of 2002's two-CD set O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits, containing single mixes of 14 favorites from the band's tenures with both Columbia and Geffen.

Perry said Aerosmith plans to resume working on the new album in February. The group has been spending a lot of time mining its vaults for old songs and ideas, most of which he said "sounded like just old-fashioned Aerosmith songs" but "weren't perceived as being right for that time."

"There's a lot of the stuff that inspired the Pump songs, and even before that," the guitarist explained to Billboard.com. "There's a lot of songs there that I think have the grit and the meat of what a lot of people expect from Aerosmith. We thought we'd take another look at that stuff, and that's what's going to be the backbone of this next record."

Joe Perry Comments

Blabbermouth.net, NY
August 29, 2006

Launch Radio Networks reports: Aerosmith is just one week away from their Route Of All Evil co-headlining tour with Motley Crue, but it wasn't that long ago that there were doubts about the band's future. Back in the spring, the band had to cancel a run of dates with Cheap Trick when Steven Tyler suffered some damage to one of his vocal cords, which required surgery, but now he's back and just as good as ever.

Lead guitarist Joe Perry told Launch that even though some people wondered about the future, the band members were more concerned about Tyler himself than their livelihoods. "I know how much he loves being on stage, and... I mean, Jesus, it would be... I can't imagine," he said. "It's like if a car ran over my hand, and I'm, you know, sitting back wondering if they're gonna be able to sew it back together. So of course you think about those kind of things, you know, but we were worried about him personally — as a brother first — and then how it would affect the band."

Aerosmith and the Crue get things started at the Germain Amphitheatre in Columbus, Ohio, next Tuesday (September 5)....

Aerosmith: CDs in Space

So Hood, NY
August 28, 2006

Toys In The Attic and Rocks are hailed as career-defining works for Aerosmith that stand among rock’s pivotal albums. You can now add another description to each album’s legacy: "gravity-defying." CD copies of both albums were recently taken into outer space by astronaut pilot Mark E. Kelly who was on board the Space Shuttle Discovery, a 13-day, 8.5 million-kilometer trip to the International Space Station in July.

A lifelong Aerosmith fan, "I met Steven [Tyler] at a couple of events and I mentioned to him that I could fly with a couple of CDs," says Kelly. "I asked him if he wanted me to take his favorite Aerosmith CDs into space. This was a huge honor for me."

In addition to the Toys In The Attic and Rocks albums floating around in the spaceship, Kelly (for whom this Shuttle Discovery ride marked his second space mission) rocked selections from Aerosmith’s catalog on his MP3 player. "Everyone aboard the flight heard 'Janie’s Got A Gun,' which is on my Ipod, and it was blasting out of the speakers. Sounded pretty cool up there." The CDs were returned to Tyler and bandmate Tom Hamilton upon Kelly’s arrival back to earth.

Tyler said, "Having spent most of the 70's and part of the 80's on the dark side of the moon myself--just for inspiration, mind you--I'm not surprised that the magic in those recordings lifted them to such heights. Having risen to the top of the charts myself, being weightless and docking with the Space Station seems fitting."

Tyler flew to Florida to be on hand for blast-off, but the Shuttle couldn’t leave July 1 or 2 because of the weather, launching instead on July 4, "which was neat for us but unfortunate for some of our guests who couldn’t stay," says Kelly. Tyler had to fly back to Boston to rehearse and then perform on CBS-TV’s "Boston Pops," during which they performed such Aerosmith classics as "Dream On," "Walk This Way" and "I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing" with the Boston Pops orchestra.

Says Kelly: "I remember on launch day, as we were getting suited up, seeing a TV spot for Steven and Joe to perform on the Boston Pops show. That definitely put me in the mood to fly the Aerosmith CDs up into space."

The Doors Celebrate New 'Perception'

AOL Music News Blog, NY
August 27, 2006

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the Doors' first album and you can expect a big bash. The party kicks off in earnest Nov. 21 with the release of 'Perception,' a six-CD, six -DVD box set featuring all of the original albums re-mastered, with additional audio tracks, and an accompanying DVD in 5.1 Surround Sound...

Drummer John Densmore also says he's very happy with producer Botnick's work... "I'm very pleased," he cracks... "We were happy to get our rent paid (and beyond!), and to have an impact on the culture."

That they clearly did. In an essay to be released in the upcoming Doors Anthology, 'The Doors in Their Own Words,' several of today's greats, including Scott Weiland, Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith, and Daron Malakian of System of a Down talk about the band's influence...

The Sunday Times - Britain

August 27, 2006

...Steven Zeitels, a leading throat specialist who has treated the voices of 40 singers, including Julie Andrews, the original Maria in The Sound of Music, has now developed a pulsed laser that can safely treat their disorders without damaging the vocal cords... Zeitels’s latest success, Steven Tyler, lead singer of the rock band Aerosmith, goes back on tour next week...

British doctors are so impressed with the results that they are traveling to Boston in October to bring the treatment method to Britain...

Two New Songs Highlight Aerosmith Best-Of

Billboard, NY
August 24, 2006

With its next studio album pushed back until 2007, Aerosmith plans to release a best-of, "Devil's Got a New Disguise" Oct. 10 via Columbia, in the midst of its fall tour with Motley Crue.

"We were working on getting a studio record out, but we just couldn't do it. There wasn't enough time," guitarist Joe Perry tells Billboard.com, calling the hits set "a good holdover."

"Devil's Got a New Disguise" takes its title from one of two new songs that will be included on the 16-track album. Perry describes it as "a classic Aerosmith rocker," while the other fresh track, "Sedona Sunrise," has been around for awhile and was considered for other Aerosmith albums. "We felt like it really had to come out, Perry says.

The rest of the set will be a "pared down" single-disc version of 2002's two-CD set "O, Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits," containing single mixes of 14 favorites from the band's tenures with both Columbia and Geffen.

Perry says Aerosmith plans to resume working on the new album in February. The group has been spending a lot of time mining its vaults for old songs and ideas, most of which he says "sounded like just old-fashioned Aerosmith songs" but "weren't perceived as being right for that time."

There's a lot of the stuff that inspired the 'Pump' songs, and even before that," the guitarist explains. "There's a lot of songs there that I think have the grit and the meat of what a lot of people expect from Aerosmith. We thought we'd take another look at that stuff, and that's what's going to be the backbone of this next record."

The Aerosmith/Motley Crue tour kicks off Sept. 5 in Columbus, Ohio.

Billboard Says: 90-Minute Sets

Billboard, NY
August 23, 2006

Even though Motley Crue has a feature film and a new album in the works, bassist Nikki Sixx says the band's upcoming co-headlining tour with Aerosmith was what really took him by surprise.

"I can't believe it," Sixx tells Billboard.com. "I'm excited but also kind of shocked. We toured for 14 months and now we're going right back on the road again? But for me, to go out with Aerosmith is something that is a dream come true."

The "Red, White and Crue Tour 2005 -- Better Live Than Dead" found the band performing its hits to a decidedly younger audience on a nightly basis. This new fan base is the reason Motley Crue jumped aboard the Route of all Evil Tour with Aerosmith, according to Sixx. The 34-date jaunt begins Sept. 5 in Columbus, Ohio. Each band will perform a 90-minute set, with Aerosmith closing the show every night.

"I think both bands work together great but they're different enough where it's not going to get boring," Sixx says. "It's quite a journey for both bands."

The Crue's journey is about to be transformed....

Motley Crue: New Stage Design Revealed

Blabbermouth.net, NY
August 22, 2006

AOL Music News has uploaded a picture of Motley Crue's stage design for its upcoming "The Route of All Evil" tour with fellow music veterans Aerosmith, which is scheduled to kick off on September 5 in Columbus, Ohio. Check it out at this location (here).

In a recent posting on his web site, Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx had the following to say regarding the group's new stage set-up: "It's hard to design a show as a co-headliner. There's different rules, concerns and limitations that apply for both bands, and you have to have your show mobile and fast to take down — it's a lot of work. With that being said, I hope I'm not building anybody's hopes up to high (mine too), but I think this show (visually) is even better than the 'Carnival of Sins' tour. I don't wanna give it away; the Internet sorta kills the element of surprise after the first show anyway."

Motley Crue is believed to have commenced the songwriting/demoing process for its new studio album with producer Bob Rock, who previously worked with Crue on their "Dr. Feelgood" and self-titled albums, as well as the three new tracks that appeared on Crue's two-CD "greatest hits" collection, "Red, White & Crüe" (which came out in February 2005). A 2007 release is expected.

Tour guides phone it in: Company moves beyond iPods

Boston Herald, MA
August 22, 2006

A local tour guide company that led tours through iPods and other MP3 players is now moving onto cell phones.

Audissey Guides, a Boston-based company that created downloadable tours of some of the city’s less frequented tourist spots, recently teamed up with Talking Street to bring its content onto visitors’ cell phones.

Despite the iPod’s success, the cell phone is the “most ubiquitous portable device,” said David Solomont, chairman of Candide Media Works Inc., parent company of Talking Street.

Indeed, allowing customers to dial-up tours rather than downloading them means they won’t have to come prepared before they hit town, said Rob Pyles, executive producer and founder of Audissey Guides. “The cool thing with cell phone tours is the traveler doesn’t have to plan ahead,” he said. “We really target younger travelers. Young people don’t always plan ahead.”

Audissey Guides’ tours of Boston usually deviate from the Freedom Trail. Instead, people like Dicky Barrett of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones provide narrated segments on events such as racial feuds that happened in the Financial District.

Talking Street is known for its cell phone celebrity tours of major cities. In the past local rocker and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler provided narration for one Boston tour.

Teaming up with Talking Street means Audissey Guides’ tours can be accessed from a cell phone by dialing a local number. The tour costs $5.95 and is billed directly to customers’ wireless bills.

Musical Instruments

Vancouver Province, Canada
August 20, 2006

Thieves are illegally chopping down highly prized maple trees -- some up to 400 years old -- in the Upper Fraser Valley forests.

Their plunder is destined for the highly lucrative musical-instrument industry, which uses the wood to make violins, cellos and guitars, often for the stars. Guitar makers pay up to $200 for a piece measuring as little as 17 by 55 centimetres.

Known as curly and quilted maple, the wood has a unique rippling and a blistered pattern valued by rock guitarists from Carlos Santana and Lenny Kravitz to Aerosmith bass player Tom Hamilton, who cough up big bucks for the instruments.

Depending on the quality of the curly or quilted pattern, one tree will yield anywhere from a few hundred dollars worth of wood to $50,000...

Michael Rytter, owner of Vedder Mountain Hardwoods in Chilliwack, is one of a handful of companies in B.C. that sells curly and quilted maple to musical instrument makers around the world.

"Woodturners die for this wood," says Rytter, whose clients include a New York "guitar maker to the stars." He usually harvests the wood himself and will only buy from another party if the wood has been legally obtained.

While maple trees are found everywhere, the sought-after curly or quilted pattern can only be found in a particular species called the Western broadleaf maple.

Even then, the curly pattern is found in only about one in 30 Western broadleaf maples and the quilted pattern in only one in 100.

Further compounding its rarity is the fact that the species grows only in coastal Oregon, coastal Washington and coastal southwestern B.C. -- and found only at elevations below 305 metres....

Life On Planet Rock
by Lonn Friend
Portrait, £10.99

Lonn Friend began his career reviewing porn films for Larry Flynt's Hustler magazine before moving seamlessly into the editor's chair at LA metal magazine RIP, and Life On Planet Rock recounts his war stories from that era. Friend is a man of dubious musical taste but boundless enthusiasm: he regards Pearl Jam, Skid Row and Linkin Park as music of the spheres, but maintains just the right degree of wry detachment when relating his lurid close encounters with Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, KISS and Metallica, among others. His tenure at RIP coincided with the demise of hair metal and advent of grunge, and he is equally amusing describing the noble task of procuring women for Mötley Crüe and being rejected as "disgusting" by a paranoid Kurt Cobain. His decline into a "what's it all about?" midlife crisis is affectingly related, and Friend's engaging demeanour throughout renders his anecdotage highly enjoyable.

More About Paid, Inc.

Boston Globe, MA
August 18, 2006

Those billboards baring Keith Lockhart's gap-toothed smile are just the beginning. You can expect a lot more propaganda for the Pops conductor now that he's signed a two-year deal with Paid, Inc. The celebrity services company issued a press release yesterday announcing it has been retained by the baton twirler to design and manage his website, manage merchandise sales, create VIP ticket packages, and authenticate memorabilia. "Keith is one of the nation's, if not the world's, most beloved and prolific conductors," proclaimed Paid, Inc.'s VP Kristen Kuliga. Some of the company's other clients include Aerosmith, Snoop Dogg, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, and Pats players Deion Branch and Troy Brown.

Letter: Thank you, from Friendship Home, Inc.

Norwell Mariner, MA
August 17, 2006

Mt. Blue Event - Steven Tyler - July 31, 2006
More pictures - (here)

To the editor:

The Friendship Home Board of Directors extends our deepest gratitude to everyone who made the 10th Annual Mt. Blue Summer Party fundraiser a huge success.

Excellent leadership was graciously and capably provided by Jayne Bowe from Mt. Blue, Joan Savarese, Elizabeth Spradlin, Debbie Rademacher, and Carol Sullivan from Friendship Home and more than 75 volunteers from Norwell and surrounding communities who worked tirelessly since February to plan and organize this special fundraising event.

Providing terrific entertainment throughout the evening - the party was held Monday, July 31 - was the South Shore Conservatory Jazz Ensemble, which featured Friendship Club's own Matt Kardok of Hingham on drums, with Ed Sorrentino and Alex Bourque from the Conservatory, rounded out by Ryan Caira, James Dow, and Dave Neves of Norwell.

Thanks also to Jim Carroll who flew in directly from Las Vegas and the renowned Joe Leary and Chris Fitz bands, who rocked the night away.

Many food and beverage vendors from the South Shore provided a wide array of tasty refreshments throughout the evening. Guests consistently raved about the variety and quality of their offerings.

We'd like to offer a special word of thanks to Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, whose gracious participation was especially welcomed by many members of the Friendship Home community.

Another highlight of the evening were the exceptional live and silent auctions, which included artwork, sporting tickets, handcrafted and gift items, and gift baskets and certificates. Dan Flynn of Daniel J. Flynn & Co., Inc. of Quincy was our auctioneer extraordinaire, making the live auction not only successful, but also fun! Our deepest appreciation goes out to all of our many donors whose contributions made for a high quality and interesting auction.

We would also like to thank Joyanne and Jon Bond of Bond Printing for their generous donation of all printed materials for this event, and to the members of the Norwell Visiting Nurse Assn. who made a special effort to enable their staff and guests to join us at Mt. Blue.

Finally, the Mt. Blue Summer Party was successful due to the efforts of so many caring people who contributed their time and talent. And, to the approximately 700 guests who attended, a special thanks for your generous support of our mission.

Rock's Best Laser Light Show Is in Steven Tyler's Throat

Wall Street Journal
August 16, 2006

Dr. Steven M. Zeitels, left, with his star patient,
singer Steven Tyler of the veteran rock band Aerosmith.

BOSTON -- Steven Tyler, the rock star and lead singer for Aerosmith, lay on an operating table at Massachusetts General Hospital in March, a thin laser snaking through his iconic mouth and down into his legendary pipes.

Nearly six months into a North American tour, a popped blood vessel on Mr. Tyler's right vocal cord had reduced his singing voice to a hoarse shrill and forced Aerosmith to cancel all 20 of its remaining concerts. The injury was a potential disaster for Mr. Tyler, whose hot-blooded, high-pitched tones have defined his 33-year career. Even the slightest tweak in his throat -- the stiffening of a vocal cord or a change in its vibration -- could have forever altered the sound of "Walk This Way," his signature tune.

But now, almost five months after his experimental surgery, he declares, "Oh, I'm back in action." He proves it with a series of wild, cascading scales. "I can do the whole Janis Joplin thing," he says. Mr. Tyler had to rest his vocal cords after the surgery ("The hardest thing was not talking for three weeks," he says), but he's working full-time now. Aerosmith has been recording in the studio this month, and a new gig, "The Route of All Evil Tour" with Mötley Crüe, begins on Sept. 5.

How Mr. Tyler, 58, reacquired his voice, signature squawks and all, could have broad implications for professional singers silenced by vocal disorders. He was treated with a pulsed potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser, the latest and most promising procedure to come out of Mass. General's voice center. Quick bursts of green laser light, lasting just 15 milliseconds, zapped Mr. Tyler's broken blood vessel, sealing the vessel without touching it.

The procedure is sounding a positive note for more successful and resilient recoveries from vocal disorders like Mr. Tyler's. It has saved the voices of at least 14 other singers since 2005, including the opera star Carol Vaness. A paper published last week by Steven M. Zeitels in the Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology (that would be ear, nose and throat) reports effective and "relatively safe" treatments in 39 singers, using the pulsed-KTP laser in some cases and an earlier incarnation, a yellow-light laser, in others.

"This is profoundly affecting the way we treat vocal disorders," says Dr. Zeitels, who performed the surgery on Mr. Tyler.

A dermatologist at Mass. General, R. Rox Anderson, first developed the use of a pulsed laser for treating port-wine stains on baby skin. The laser heated the blood causing the stain without stiffening the delicate baby skin around it. Dr. Zeitels then applied the same concept to the vocal cords. Dr. Zeitels believes he's the only one using the pulsed-KTP laser on the vocal cords.

The National Institutes of Health estimates that 7.5 million Americans have trouble using their voice, with disorders ranging from spasms to tumors. Singers, who use their voices constantly with little rest, are at the highest risk. Greater touring demands have increasingly strained voice boxes in genres from opera to hip hop. And the belting, wailing, and screeching common among some singers, especially in hard rock and heavy metal, have led to still further woes. Canceled appearances, delayed albums and shortened careers can frustrate both artists and their fans. Just this week, Mick Jagger was forced to cancel two Rolling Stones concerts in Spain after coming down with laryngitis, the band said.

"Just like athletes, singers need to have adequate rest," says Jan Shapiro, chair of the voice department at Berklee College of Music in Boston. "Opera singers hitting high notes, even students practicing every day, that takes its toll. We see all sorts of voice problems and more now than ever."

The offices of Mass. General's voice center, which has emerged as the nation's pioneer in the treatment of vocal disorders, are a testament to its range of high-profile patients. Signed head shots of such artists as Ozzie Osborne and Cher line the wall. A photo features Sen. John F. Kerry, who lost his voice in losing the 2004 presidential election. Another shows a smiling Jack Welch, former chief executive of General Electric Co.

The dominant treatments for broken blood vessels in the larynx have traditionally been cauterization and removal with surgical tools. But both methods carry a high risk for altering the vocal cords, or vocal folds, as they are clinically known, by applying excess heat and leaving them stiff.

In Mr. Tyler's operation, the goal "was to get the vessel to seal without getting heat outside the vessel," Dr. Zeitels says. "It's the heat outside the vessel that causes stiffening in the vocal folds."

Dr. Zeitels has used the laser to treat not only broken vessels, but also dilated veins, polyps and precancerous lesions known as dysplasia. The laser interrupts the blood supply that such disorders depend on to thrive. Many of the procedures can be performed in his office with just local anesthesia. The main risk is surgical error, since the treatment area is so small.

The treatment is not just for singers, either. "We get professors, CEOs, anyone who's using his voice all day without much rest for years and years," says Robert E. Hillman, research director at the voice center. They have also begun using the pulsed-KTP laser on laryngeal cancer, helping to avoid radiation treatment or removal of the larynx.

John Ward, a business professor at Northwestern University, developed two cancers on his vocal cords, and many doctors said he would have to undergo radiation, which causes scarring and can only be used once. But in three surgeries over several months, Dr. Zeitels was able to remove the larger tumor and eliminate the other by cutting off its blood supply with the yellow-light laser. That saved Prof. Ward's voice, and he continues to give lectures and coach his child's soccer team.

Almost four years later, Prof. Ward is considered cured and says in a raspy but healthy voice, "Dr. Zeitels not only saved my life but my career as well." The experience led Prof. Ward to help form the Institute of Laryngology and Voice Restoration, which has raised more than $5 million for the Mass. General voice center in three years.

That money, along with funding from the hospital itself, has allowed Dr. Zeitels to expand his practice into a full-blown research center, by far the world's largest in laryngeal surgery. The center is equipped with two advanced sound rooms, not unlike a recording studio, where doctors can make precise measurements of voice quality and lung pressure for comparison after treatment. A speech pathologist at the center, who is also a classical singer, outfitted her own examination room with a grand piano.

The center also provides continuing medical education classes for laryngologists and surgeons, sometimes presenting live demonstrations of the pulsed-KTP laser treatment. One video shown to doctors features a view of Mr. Tyler's vocal cords, healed after surgery, as he sings Aerosmith's 1973 smash "Dream On" with his customary verve. The twin folds of mucous membrane vibrate violently over his larynx as Mr. Tyler hits the chorus, "Sing with me, sing for the years..."

Joe Perry Comments About Motley Crue

Blabbermouth.net, NY
August 11, 2006

Launch Radio Networks reports: We're less than a month away from the start of the Aerosmith/Motley Crue "Route of All Evil" tour, and the excitement is building. The bands have known each other for many years, having recorded in adjoining studios in Vancouver, so they're all looking forward to spending time together. Aerosmith lead guitarist Joe Perry told Launch that his Crue memories go back even farther, to the time when they first proved themselves to everyone. "To me, Motley Crue is still a baby band, you know?" he said. "I remember seeing them play... I think it might have been one of their first big arena shows, at the Santa Monica Civic Center (in California), when their first record came out. And of that generation of bands, they were the best ones, you know what I mean?"

The "Route of All Evil" tour gets underway in Columbus, Ohio, on September 5.

Both bands are working on new albums, but neither one will be ready before the tour.

John B - Road Report

Back To Work

It's been a while since I wrote so I thought I would fill you guys on what's been going on this summer. First off I have been to many Fourth of July's on the Esplanade in Boston but this one was by far the best one yet. Not only was the music top notch but also the fireworks display was the best I have ever seen. But! One major draw back was old Dr. Phil. He and wife seemed nice enough but their ability to read a teleprompter was on par with my 86 year old father in-law. I suggest an intervention on those two.

Steven Tyler has to be rock's version of Steve Austin. We can rebuild him! The guy is a machine and he seems to be well lubed for the upcoming “Route of all Evil Tour” with Motley Crue. The band start rehearsals next week. The stage will once again extend out into the audience but this time instead of the two ramps it will only have the one going out. The outdoor amphitheatres are just not cut out for the stage set up that you guys saw on the tour with Lenny. There will be a lot of changes on this upcoming tour and the band intends to keep it fresh. I am the first one to mention old chestnuts and this tour is no different.

Steven has kept himself pretty busy shuttling back and forth to the west coast, hanging with Liv and Royston in NYC, Mt. Blue charity gatherings and jamming with Willie Nelson. Sounds like he is in mid tour form.

The weather in Massachusetts was unbelievably hot last week that I felt like boarding a plane to Scottsdale and spend some time at the Alcor Cryonics Center and crawl into one of those cylinders they have Ted Williams frozen in but instead went to a beach on the Cape only to yet again have a group of teenagers try and roll me back in the water like I was some beached whale. Well it's better than last summer when I fell asleep on Nauset Beach only to wake up with a team of scientist over me getting ready to carve me up like I was some beached Humpback. Other than that - it was a great vacation.

Joe spent some time with a band from Sierra Leone called “The Refugee All Stars”. He was watching a documentary about them with his wife Billie and decided to fund a show for them to play in Woodstock, VT. If you get a chance check out their website to see what they are all about and you will be amazed. Joe jammed with them and had the guys over his house for the afternoon. He was astounded at their equipment that they brought with them. One of the guitar players played a right-handed guitar left handed and didn't even have the strings switched properly for a lefty. Joe couldn't believe the sounds that were coming out of these old and worn instruments. He then sent the guys all new guitars and a bass. Of course he sent 2 Joe Perry model Les Paul's along with a Gibson Left handed SG. The All Stars just completed a tour of Japan and hopefully we won't be too far behind them.

Joe stopped by Guitar Center in Boston last week with his son Roman. He went in looking to buy a Bass for the youngster and ended up trying out a Marshall Stack. The Amp is one of 250 ever made by Marshall and has a real vintage look to. The store manager PK Pandey opened the front doors and handed Joe a Les Paul and said give it a try. Joe proceeded to blow the roof off the joint and stopped traffic on Commonwealth with his riffs. Don't worry Roman left with a new bass and Joe will have an new addition to his stage rig.

Joey has been in and out of the studio this week working on his drums with his tech “MaGee.” MaGee has been working on his drumming skills since March and has improved dramatically. Last year his playing sounded like a couple of sneakers in an old Maytag. The guy just dropped almost 90 lbs. since the end of the last tour and since he is one of the only guys on the payroll right now is my choice for Employee of the Week!

These days MaGee is on a steady diet of drumsticks!
Photo: John Bionelli

It looks like this tour with Motley Crue will go until at least the end of November and then who the hell knows what will happen.

One last note:

I have been toying around with the idea of doing a diary like Ross Halfin has on his website but figured people don't really want to hear what I had for breakfast or what airline has the best peanuts in first class so I'm just gonna keep it real. All Friendly.

See you on the road!

27 days and counting.
John B.

A region rich in firsts

Boston Globe, MA
August 10, 2006

When I read about Marshfield's recent celebration of the world's first radio broadcast, made by Reginald Fessenden in 1906, it got me thinking about other firsts connected to our region. I knew that Boston was home to the invention of the typewriter and sewing machine, the printing of the first Christmas card, the building of the first subway, and the founding of the first newspaper, just to name a few. But it seemed that Boston must not be the only spot in Massachusetts where significant accomplishments could be found.

So I began a little online research to see if I could compile a list of Southeastern Massachusetts firsts.

Starting the list was fairly easy, thanks to the Pilgrims. Of course the first Thanksgiving was held right here in Plymouth in 1621 and sadly the first war between the white settlers and the N ative Americans, better known as King Philip's War, started in our region.

Then there was John Hancock of Braintree, who with a defiant flourish became the first signer of the Declaration of Independence. And there was the Adams duo of Braintree and Quincy who became the first father-and-son presidents in our nation's history.

But Quincy's contribution goes beyond those well-known firsts in the political arena. It was where the nation's first railroad was built, in 1826. And the city is credited with launching the first nuclear-powered surface ship, the USS Long Beach, from the Fore River Shipyard in 1961.

Brockton also offers some firsts. There was William Douglas, the shoe king of the city, who is recognized as starting the first retail shoe chain in the country, with 127 stores opened from New York City to Minneapolis. Douglas is also viewed by many in the advertising industry as the first retailer to use newspaper ads to sell his product. The first advertisements for shoes appeared in 1884. This is the same William Douglas who would go on to become governor of Massachusetts in 1905.

And any mention of Brockton must include mention of Rocky Marciano, who retired after six title fights to become the first and only heavyweight boxing champion to retire undefeated.

I would be remiss if I didn't put a plug in for my employer, Bridgewater State College, which holds the distinction of being the first state normal school -- that means teacher s college -- in the United States. The year was 1840. (I say that with a respectful nod to Framingham State College, which may have started its school one year earlier, but then folded.)

And I would be even more remiss if I didn't recognize the accomplishments of my hometown, Whitman. The town holds the distinction of being the first to answer the call of President Lincoln in 1861 for men to fight in the Civil War. The men boarded the train from Whitman to South Station and then on to Washington, where they were greeted by surprised officials, who couldn't believe the dedication, determination, and the patriotism of the men from Whitman.

And who can forget that my town is where the first Toll House cookies were baked by Ruth Wakefield in the 1930s?

These are just a few of our region's firsts. I am sure there are many other inventions, accomplishments, and contributions worthy of recognition.

But the important point is that our region is not without distinction and that there will be many more distinctions credited to individuals and institutions in the future. How about recognizing Aerosmith (headed by local guys Steven Tyler and Joe Perry) as the first great American rock band?

Michael Kryzanek of Whitman is professor of political science at Bridgewater State College. He can be reached at mkryzanek@bridgew.edu.

Educator gets to see friend go into space

Kerrville Daily Times, TX
August 7, 2006

Katy Jones’ heart stopped for a moment while watching the space shuttle climb through the air, but her fear quickly turned into excitement. The Kerrville teacher watched the space shuttle Discovery launch July 4 in Cape Canaveral, Fla., and froze with fear 73 seconds after liftoff as she recalled that was the moment the Challenger exploded. Mike Fossum, her friend since eighth grade who now lives in Houston, was aboard the shuttle for the STS-121 mission, Jones said. She worried about something going wrong on the mission specialist’s first trip to space. "I always have the Challenger in the back of my head," she said. But her fears subsided and were replaced with excitement when the tense point ended... It took Fossum a while to actually start his career. He began working at NASA as a systems engineer in 1993. He became part of the Astronaut Candidate Training program in 1998 after being rejected six times, Jones said. His first space shuttle mission also was delayed, like the start to his astronaut career. The Discovery launch was originally set for June 30, but it was postponed to July 4 because of weather complications. A thunderstorm was 20 miles away from the landing strip, so the mission had to be scrubbed. Jones said she thought the shuttle was postponed to the perfect day. "It made (the launch) more all-American and apple pie," Jones said.

Making the launch even more all-American, a member of a well-known American band attended as well, even if Jones didn’t know it at first. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith stood right next to Jones on June 30, but she didn’t realize who he was until later that day. She knew he looked familiar, but she assumed he was a friend of one of the astronauts. She said her tour guide told the group that he attended the launch simply because the space program has interested him for many years.

Jones also learned a few tidbits at the launch that she plans to teach children. She is a science and poetry teacher for home-schooled children, and this year she is teaching physics. She said she wants to make her class more interesting for students by sharing her launch experience with them. Jones also can tell them the few physics lessons she learned while at the Kennedy Space Center, such as aspects of gravity and why the smoke from the shuttle stays around after the launch...

Album Release Update

FOX News
August 3, 2006

Maybe you had to be on the breezy warm roof of 610 W. 26th St. last night to really appreciate what was going on. Hugo Boss sponsored a party with Interview magazine to help celebrate their music issue.

The guest band was Arckid, which consists of the Langdon brothers. Roy Langdon is married to actress Liv Tyler, and she was there (of course) with her mom, Bebe Buell, and her two dads.

No, it’s not a TV show. Liv was raised as the daughter of rocker Todd Rundgren until she discovered around age 10 that Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler was her biological father.

Then, in the spirit of family, the whole gang milled about on the roof, as well as famed photographer Bob Gruen, and another big-name rocker, David Bowie.

Steven Tyler brought his new girlfriend, Erin, whom he hugged a lot. Everyone got along famously, bopping up and down to Arckid. The group is terrific, by the way.

Tyler, who had surgery earlier this year for throat problems, looks and sounds great. He told me Aerosmith starts touring soon with Motley Crue.

"Someone’s gotta do it," he said with a shrug.

The group is getting a "best of" album together for Christmas and may include one new song as well. Then they will begin thinking about a totally new album early next year.

As for Rundgren, we did talk about his exclusion so far from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

"I wouldn’t go even if they inducted me," he insisted. "I loved what the Sex Pistols did this year."

Rundgren has every right to be bitter. Apart from hits like "Hello It’s Me" and "I Saw the Light," he has also been a seminal producer for Grand Funk Railroad, Badfinger, XTC and other groups.

After a while he said, "Let me know if I get in. I could come and not be happy about it."
