Aerosmith fans get Christmas early

The Guardian, Canada
April 30, 2007

Local fans pitch tents and endure some raindrops to pick up their tickets

Brian Wakelin came into Charlottetown from North Rustico early Friday morning to make sure he was first in line to buy Aerosmith tickets.

By 8 a.m., Wakelin and several of his friends were waiting outside the Civic Centre. Tickets for the July concert, dubbed Blast at the Beach, weren’t available until Saturday at 10 a.m. at different locations across the Maritimes, including the Civic Centre, as well as online.

As Friday night approached, the weather turned cold, windy and rainy, and the friends, who all attend Bluefield high school, pitched a makeshift tent to sleep for the night.

“It wasn’t even a tent,’’ Wakelin said laughing. “It was like tarps taped together."

But it was worth it, as Wakelin and friends were once again the first in line for a big show.

“We went to the Rolling Stones, we were first in line. We’re first in line for everything," he said, adding he had a lot of fun and met some “really neat people."

Another fan that arrived at the Civic Centre Friday night was Keri Lannigan. She was able to purchase the first VIP ticket.

She said the cost of $240 for the VIP ticket, which includes early access to the venue, food and drinks all day, separate washrooms and premium viewing location near the stage, was worth it.

“I’ll be close to Steven Tyler,’’ she said. “I love Aerosmith. I grew up with them. I used to sing into the handle of a broom, I would sing Aerosmith."

David Carver, the man responsible for bringing Aerosmith to the Island, said ticket sales over the weekend were “through the roof."

At last count, more than 20,000 tickets were sold, he said.

“I’m expecting that on July 21, Aerosmith is going to be playing to a sold-out audience."

Although there are going to be at least five more bands to play before Aerosmith, Carver said it’s still too soon to say what those acts will be.

It’s hard to book bands for summer tours all at once, because some bands plan their tours well in advance, like Aerosmith, while others still haven’t finalized their dates, he said, adding a few bands look promising.

“As soon as we get them confirmed, we’re going to announce them. We’re not holding back."

Carver said if time permits, he’d like to see an Island band get a chance to play.

Last year, Carver brought the Black Eyed Peas to P.E.I.

He said the Jungle Jim’s outlets in the Maritimes sold tickets for that concert.

“They said that the phone action leading up to the (lineup) sale was unbelievable last year for the Black Eyed Peas, and they said it’s 10 times that for this year."

Twenty-five thousand tickets are available for the outdoor concert, being held at the Charlottetown Driving Park and Entertainment Centre July 21.

San Luis Obispo Tribune, CA
April 27, 2007

Classic rock band Aerosmith made history before they even got to the California Mid-State Fair to perform.

The band is the first ever musical group coming to the Paso Robles fair to sell out in a single day.

The 14,661 tickets for the July 25 concert, the most expensive in the fair’s history, were gone in a matter of hours Friday after going on sale at 10 a.m.

Ticket outlets, phone lines and online sites were jammed immediately, and some people waited in line overnight to get tickets.

Pageantry Rocks

Las Vegas Review-Journal

Pageantry Homes has given away four sets of 10 VIP tickets to the April 28 Aerosmith charity concert at Mandalay Bay Events Center.

The event will benefit the Lili Claire Foundation, which helps Southern Nevada children living with Williams syndrome, Down syndrome, autism and other neuro-developmental conditions.

The home builder has only two sets remaining of 10 VIP tickets to give away in its promotion, where home shoppers enter a drawing at one of its participating neighborhoods...

"The people that have already won tickets are thrilled with the opportunity to see Aerosmith live, in what could be their only appearance in Las Vegas this year," said Michael Cox, sales and marketing director of Pageantry Communities.

To enter the ticket giveaway, visit a participating Pageantry Community before
April 27 and find the hidden entry box inside one of the community models and deposit a completed entry form.

Eligible entries include name, address, daytime phone number and age.

The final two prize winners will be selected during the morning newscast on TV-KVVU, channel Fox 5.

The Lili Claire Foundation's fifth annual benefit dinner and concert, featuring Aerosmith, will honor Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino President/Chief Operating Officer Bill Hornbuckle, Land Baron Investments Founder/Principal Michael Chernine and UNSOM Professor and Chief Genetics and Dysmorphology Dr. Colleen Morris for their work on behalf of the Lili Claire Foundation and the children the organization assists.

The Lili Claire Foundation was established in 1998 by Keith Resnick and his wife, Leslie Litt-Resnick, when their 5 1/2-month-old daughter, Lili Claire, died of heart complications related to Williams syndrome.

"Lili Claire Foundation is an amazing organization that provides much-needed assistance at no cost to families in need with children suffering from neuron-developmental disorders," Cox said.

"Pageantry is committed to being a community partner, by lending a hand to nonprofits like Lili Claire that work hard to make Las Vegas a better place to live for future generations," he said.

For more information on the promotion, visit Fox5vegas.com or pageantryco.com.

El Loco

On to Monterrey Mexico. The guys played at a place called Estadio Universitario to about 50,000 people. The place went nuts wire to wire. Aerosmith hasn’t been to Mexico since 1994. The set list was pretty much the same as the 2 South American shows. Out was Crazy, but something strange happened that I have never seen or heard before. As the band’s Suburbans raced out of the stadium with the chords of “Walk this Way” still ringing in everybody’s ears the 50,000 or so Monterrey aerofanatics were signing at the top of their lungs the chorus of Crazy. Maybe it was time to put it back in. The next day the guys flew to Guadalajara. It was about an hour flight, which made the 11-hour flight to Monterrey seem like a distant memory. That night some of the guys went to a great restaurant called “Santo Coyote”. The food was great and the atmosphere even better. Smoking was permitted in the bar area which made Tour Manager Jimmy Eyers happy as he smokes like an old Buick.

The next night the gig was at basically a bullring called Arena VFG. It also houses rodeos, which made Joe happy as he got to ride before the show. The guys played to about 15,000 people. It was the only indoor show of the tour. Before the gig the crew guys were concerned that the sound coming off the stage was too boomy and that it may throw Joe off. All of the other band members wear in ear monitors so the sound is basically the same every night. Joe’s answer to that was to crank up his amps. It ended up being the best sounding show of the tour. Brad, Tom, Joey and Donny aka Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo went to a place called “Tlaquepaque”.

Tlaquepaque is one of those places that shoppers dream of. This Guadalajara suburb is a "must" on any vacationers agenda. I know people who have flown halfway around the world just to shop in Tlaquepaque. The main shopping area has been closed off to traffic so that you can stroll and shop at a leisurely pace.

Ok so I cut and pasted that last paragraph. Sue me! Brad ended up with a gorgeous old covered wagon for his home and Joey and Tom got a bunch of knick knacks.

Next it was off to Mexico City. This place reminded me of a cross between Paris and Flint Michigan. The police escort from the airport was off the hook. On every turn I thought that I would loose that delicious Quesadilla I had earlier in the day. We arrived safe and sound just in time to see a great band from Mexico City open the show called “Cucao”. Like La Cucaracha. Good bunch of Amigos!

Guess what? Crazy was back! Also Joe and Steven thought Mama Kin instead of Toys would be a nice change. I love Brad’s solo in Mama Kin and tonight he took it even higher. Maybe it was the elevation of the Stadium where everyone in attendance got free admission to the mile high (and higher) club.

Next up Vegas baby! Please remember to split them and double down...

See You On the Road!

Juan B.

PS. I just got word that Ross Halfin is coming to our hotel today. The staff here called him the orange “Oompa-loompa”. Please folks that is a term of endearment on their part and should not be taken as a derogatory statement against Oompa-loompa’s.

Aerosmith Performs Its Greatest Hits for a Great Cause—Life

For almost four decades, Aerosmith has managed to accomplish what few bands are capable of: making a career out of rock ‘n’ roll.

“You don’t have to be a big fan to shake your head and wonder how we do it,” Joe Perry told What’s On. “How we haven’t dropped off or died of an overdose…the trials and tribulations we’ve all gone through and still carried on. It’s the culture of rock ‘n’ roll to have a couple hit singles and disappear or break up or OD, but we’re proof it doesn’t have to be that way. You can survive the drug issues. You can have a career at this.”

The record label as venture capital firm

CNNMoney.com
April 19 2007

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- Three years ago, a couple of economists rankled the music industry...

...Now, a big industry player is closing in on another type of union that would tap into new revenue outlets -- and if it's successful offer a new economic model for the major record companies. Warner Music Group, which was acquired by Edgar Bronfman Jr. and several private equity outfits in 2003 from Time Warner (Charts, Fortune 500) for $2.6 billion, is inching toward a deal to acquire Front Line Management, the nation's largest artist management firm, owned by the famed manager Irving Azoff. The firm represents a slew of big-name artists, everyone from Christina Aguilera to Van Halen to Aerosmith. (The deal has been rumored for months within the industry, but sources tell me that talks have lately gained momentum)...

Sunset in Peru……

Well the first 2 shows of this tour went great. Tons of time traveling though. It can wear you down. I don’t think anybody has been to bed before 4:00am.

The rehearsals were a lot of fun especially since Tom was back. The guys put together a set list of songs that the kids in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico wanted to hear. Since it has been 13 years since Aerosmith has been to these places they haven’t heard anything from Nine Lives, Just Push and Honkin’. "Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees)" and "Crazy" made it into the set as well as "Dude", which has only been played a handful of times since 1999. It turned out to be a great move by the guys because a lot of the fans still think Permanent Vacation was the band’s first album and "Dream On"," Walk this Way" and "Sweet Emotion" appeared from thin air.

We got to have a great support band for the 2 shows. Velvet Revolver! They were staying at the same Hotels as us so it was great to see them. At one point in Sao Paulo, Duff, Slash, Matt, Joe and Steven were all in the Hotel gym at the same time and it was cool seeing these guys talk about touring together during the years in between water breaks and sets. Matt as you may remember played with the Cult, who did a bunch of shows with the guys.

The Sao Paulo show was awesome - 50,000 screaming people singing every word to Elevator. All you could see were a sea of people jumping up and down. It was Brazilians by the millions.

Next up was Buenos Aires, Argentina:

The hotel we all were staying at was Amazing. It was called Faena Hotel and Universe. It was owned by this guy named Alan who invited the guys out to dinner at the Hotel’s steakhouse. The food was amazing and it was great to see the band out enjoying themselves. The next day I went with some of the guys from VR to see the Pyscadelic Furs at a club called the Roxy. After the show we went back to the Hotel bar where we found Brad Whitford jamming with the house band to the wee hours of the night. It was great to just sit back and hear Brad wail for about 2 hours. The place was packed.

Fill 'er Up - Photo: John Bionelli

The show in Buenos Aires may have been the best show I have seen in quite sometime. The stage was huge! The place held 65,000 people and was sold out. The guys put Crazy in the set without even rehearsing it and it came out awesome.

The next day Brad, Tom and Joey decided to go leather shopping. I guess leather is pretty cheap there and the guys stocked up on jackets for their wives. Band Associate Donny Wightman picked up a pair of black leather chaps at the request of Ross Halfin.

Velvet Revolver were playing at a small Theatre in Buenos Aires that night and Joe and his wife Billie decided to check them out. We got to the place about 3 minutes before they went on and watched from the side of the stage. The venue was like a sauna. It was 1 1/2 hours of sweaty grimy rock and roll. The new songs were awesome. Go out and get their new record when it comes out.

Steven and Joey check out Lima - Photo: John Bionelli

What do you do on your day off? You fly 11 hours to Monterrey, Mexico of course. On the way we had to stop in Lima, Peru for gas and the guys started to get a little antsy on the plane. So after Mr. Perry assisted the local airport worker fill the plane with petrol the guys had an impromptu photo session with Billie Perry behind the lens. It was one of those moments besides the stage and the fuselage of a airplane where the guys just hung out for 45 minutes and enjoyed the sunset in Lima, Peru.

See you on the Road!

John B.

    Aerosmith - NASCAR Season Open

    Broadcast Newsroom, CA
    April 9, 2007

Habana Avenue put the pedal to the metal recently when it helped create Aerosmith’s rockin’ NASCAR season open which precedes every race broadcast on ESPN. The high-octane, 12-camera HD shoot took place during the band’s concert gig at the MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas.

The open, which finds Aerosmith performing its anthem of the ’70s, “Back in the Saddle,” marks the resurgence of the iconic band and the start of a new season of NASCAR racing on ESPN.

“We did a location scout of Aerosmith’s Nashville concert last October and had an opportunity to pitch creative to the band and its management,” says Habana Avenue creative director/executive producer, Steven J. Levy. “Aerosmith are huge NASCAR fans, and they added their input on how to tailor their show to the specific needs of NASCAR and ESPN. We were interested in shooting a big green screen behind them and the MGM Grand Arena was one of just two indoor venues that met our size requirements.”

It was Habana Avenue’s intention to stage an unobtrusive shoot during the gig but “Aerosmith was so excited that they wanted to embellish the show with cars and other NASCAR elements,” Levy reports. “The band, their crew and staff -- they were all really into it.”

Habana Avenue brought in a giant green screen for the sound check during which NASCAR-specific footage cut for the song was projected behind the band. Images included cars from Richard Petty Racing branded with Aerosmith’s and ESPN’s logos. The green screen was quickly dismantled and the band’s huge custom LED screen was installed in time for the show. Live IMAG and video elements on the LEDs were captured during Aerosmith’s performance.

An HD broadcast truck from Cox Media worked in conjunction with Nocturne Productions, Aerosmith’s broadcast-equipment provider, on the production which featured a dozen Sony broadcast HD cameras shooting 720p. Cameras were Steadicam-operated, handheld, pedestal-mounted and robotic.

Female Racettes, waving checkered flags, took center stage at the start of the open. They choreographed a flag reveal of Steven Tyler who cried, “I’m back!” and launched into the lyrics of the slammin’ “Back in the Saddle.” Feeds from remote cameras and POV cameras were adjusted to work with the shoot and mixed with new feeds especially for the open.

One of the production’s most innovative elements was suggested by Aerosmith. Habana Avenue was tasked with turning a real NASCAR vehicle into a lighting instrument replacing its headlights with powerful spotlights illuminating the band. “We had to figure out how to gut the vehicle, make it light enough to hoist in the air and fly on the edge of the stage, and rebuild it as an effects element,” Levy explains.

Aerosmith performed two run-throughs of the song back-to-back during the concert with the audience becoming a dynamic part of the open, too. “Everyone was so excited about doing this,” says Levy. “The MGM Grand Arena was great to work with -- they let us get in, get out and do anything we needed. Aerosmith, its management and Nocturne were terrific throughout.”

At ESPN, Valerie Fischler was senior creative producer, Rich Feinberg NASCAR senior coordinating producer and Neil Goldberg NASCAR coordinating producer. At Habana Avenue, Steven J. Levy, who served as creative producer for the project, was supported by his West Coast team which included producer John Mullins and production manager Philip Ruddy.

Habana Avenue is a full-service TV, film, live event and concert-experience production company and an original content creator. The company has offices in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami’s South Beach and Tampa. It maintains a boutique postproduction facility in Tampa and has postproduction partnerships with the full-service Mad Toy Box Post in Charlotte, North Carolina and Vidiots in New York City.

Tom Checks In - Rehearsals - South America

The band is psyched to say the least to be going to South America and Mexico. We’ve been bangin’ away down at Pandora’s Box (our studio) shakin’ off the rust and getting the machine ready. It’s been years since we’ve been down that way and we want to make sure we do as much damage as possible. I remember the last time we played Sao Paulo. It was our first time playing in Brazil and we were amazed at how many people are into the band. Thinking about it makes us anxious to get down there and show how much we’ve been practicing all these years.

Speaking of practicing, we spent several days last week getting ready. We picked a bunch of songs that we’re sure people want to hear and hopefully we guessed right. Some of them are ones we haven’t been playing for the last couple of years. Actually, a few of them weren’t even written the last time we played there. We’ve got a lot of other stuff going on in our show that we never did in South America, especially with the sound, lights and the video screens. We were sitting around talking about it and getting excited about taking everything we’ve been doing all these years and spewing it out all at once!

I hope everybody in Sao Paulo is ready!

    See you Thursday,

    TH

    Virtual Museum

    Wyoming News, WY
    April 9, 2007

BOSTON - From the power chords of Aerosmith to the jazz beats of Roy Haynes and the funky dance rhythms of the Tavares, New England has been home to a diverse and vibrant music scene for decades.

Until recently, however, there has never been a single repository for that musical history. A few men with deep roots in the region's music scene have set up a Web site to celebrate some of the area's greatest artists. Their goal is to one day open a bricks and mortar museum....

....The evolving site, online since November, has biographies of 52 artists. It also features sound and video clips, a list of some of the region's top concert halls and links that take visitors to the artists' official sites.....

....The only qualification for inclusion: Artists must have made a "substantial contribution" to the region's music scene. The site includes those born in New England, including Connecticut native and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Gene Pitney; those who made their name here, including New Wave pioneers The Cars; and those who made the area their home, including folk singer James Taylor....

    The transcript...

    Thanks to:  Dr J Jones

    Moderator

Zildjian would like to once again welcome all of our Z Club members to our chat session with Joey Kramer today starting at 8 PM, Eastern Daylight Time. For those of you that would like to submit questions you may start doing that up to one half hour before the start of the session. We do ask that you try to keep your questions brief to allow for as many questions as possible in the time that we have available. Zildjian monitors all chats and cannot guarantee that every question will be answered during the time allotted. Joey will begin to respond to your questions promptly at 8 PM and we hope that you will enjoy the session that follows.

Joey Kramer is simply one of the most influential drummers ever. Anyone involved in rock music today would be hard pressed to say they weren't, in some way, influenced by Aerosmith; one of the most popular bands of all time.

Joey's playing defines what rock drumming is all about; a deep, solid groove, tasteful fills and rock solid time. Coming from the school of "less is more", Joey's drumming is as much a part of Aerosmith's sound as Steven Tyler's voice, and Joe Perry's guitar.

    Moderator
Joey, thank you for being with us tonight.
    It's good to be here.

    Moderator
Joey, before we start can you tell us what you have been doing lately?
A lot of rehearsing for the upcoming tour (right around the corner from the Zildjian Factory), a lot of recording and a lot of driving.

    knjw
Why don't you still do solos during Aerosmith shows?
    Drum solos are boring.

    knjw
Any plans at all for a solo project?
Yes, but I'm not at liberty to discuss it. It is not musical and will be out in a year's time or so.

    Alexandria
I'm reading your autobiography, personally what memory sticks out the most for you and the band?
My first drum solo at Pontiac Stadium in Detroit in 1974. 80,000 people - sold out.

    ami_wicca
How do you feel when you're on stage? (to me you look very happy and concentrated)
Happy, snappy and bursting with love!

    kramers girl
What album has been your favorite to drum on and why
    "Rocks" and "Honkin' On Bobo".

    knjw
What new drummers are impressing you?
Taylor Hawkins, Tre Cool and Adrian Young, and Jesse Kramer to name a few.

    Tyler17
Mike from Phila. Thanks for 30 yrs of enjoyment. What are your top 5 Aerosmith songs from a drummer's view point?
Lord of the Thighs, Last Child, Nobody's Fault, Round and Round, Lick and a Promise.

    ami_wicca
What kind of music are you currently listening to?
Tower of Power, Earth, Wind & Fire, James Brown, Green Day, Jet, Velvet Revolver...

    knjw
any hobbies besides the beautiful cars?
I now own a car dealership, so buying and selling cars is a hobby.

    knjw
We've seen Steven in a few movies. Any desire to act?
No acting here - just the real deal.

    knjw
What do you think you'd be doing today if you weren't a drummer?
    I'd be an archaelogist.

    cruehead1991
There were rumors going around that Aerosmith was going to play a couple shows with the Rolling Stones, is this true?
No, this is not true. No dates with the Stones are planned.

    cindi
What is the key to staying focused - you never seem to stray, and Lord knows, there are distractions during a concert !
There's no thinking involved. Being focused is from the heart. If you're coming from the heart, you can never lose or stray.

    cruehead1991
who influenced you to play the drums?
Dino Dinelli, Clive Bunker, Mitch Mitchell, Clyde Stubblefield, John Bonham...

Fletcher from Please Select a State
Hi...i wanted to ask u what kind of practices do u do before every jam session ?....thanks for your time..
Isometrics and a little bit of stretching.

    leo.slima from
Joey, im from Sao Paulo. You are coming here soon. Did you like your first time here? What do you expect for this gig?
Loved our first time in Brazil! Can you tell me which songs we should play?

    knjw
    What are your biggest regrets?
I didn't finish school, and not discovering Lamborghini's until later in life.

    thereasonadog
Hi Joey. I see drum intros like walk this way, rock candy, and poor tom, seem to be a lost art form. What do you think?
I think much of drumming is a lost art form and it's not what it used to be in the old days...

Fletcher from Please Select a State
What is your favourite cymbal...that zildjian manufactures of course ?
The Z Mega Bell Ride. It's an amazing cymbal.

    knjw
What advice would you give to asspiring musicians?
    Chase the passion.

    NYaerofan
What is your least favorite song to play?
Even after all these years, I love them all.

    cindi
Jesse was spectacular sitting in for you on a few songs. He seemed to slide right in - had he played with Aerosmith before?
Yes, when I had my shoulder surgery he did a lot of rehearsing with the guys, so he was familiar with the material. It was a proud moment for me.

    cruehead1991
is their any non aerosmith songs that you just love playing?
    Yes.

    knjw
What do you like to do in your free time?
My favorite thing is to chill with my wife April and lots of recreational driving.

    cindi
Do you play any other instruments?
Bits and pieces of bass and guitar.

    knjw
Aerosmith live is sounding better every year. How much longer do you want to continue touring?
I don't really see an end in sight. We still love performing live.

    Hanimal from
with what kind of drumsticks do you play?
Zildjian's Joey Kramer model of course!

    Aerofan32
What are you most looking forward to on your world tour 07 and what are you guys gonna play?
Looking forward to going to Russia, India and Dubai, and we're going to play everything you love.

    cindi
We loved HOB tour with the drumset at the end of the catwalk. How was that experience for you? Consider doing it again?
It was a great experience - I loved being so close to you guys, but I wouldn't consider doing it again.

    Dr J Jones
Is driving the Aerosmith machine anything like driving your Lambo?
Yes, it's more powerful, but doesn't handle quite as well

    spinnin
Are the band aerosmith really coming to the country India?
    Positively. Looking forward to it.

    NYaerofan
Who came up with the name KrameDog? Did you like that image in the video "Pink"?
A high school friend came up with it, and yes, I liked the image in the video.

    Aero Rocker
who has influenced you most in life?
Muhammad Ali, Sidney Poitier, my dad, to name a few...

    Dr J Jones
Carl From Vegas..Your kit has shrunk to a 3 piece on the past few tours. when and why did you decide that less is more?
All my heros used smaller kits, and as far as I'm concerned, that's all you need.

    Teri Troub
Have U Ever Broken One of those Zildjian's When U R Rockin Out a Live Performance?
Yes, but overall my cymbals hold up well and I can always count on Zildjians.

    cindi
How do keep in shape? What's the regimen?
    Plenty of exercise and sex.

    ami_wicca
    Favorite sport besides "Girl Watching"?
    Boxing.

    Moderator
Do you have a collection of drum kits or just a few that you use on tour?
My drum kits that I've used on tour are on display at various Hard Rock Cafes around the world. I do keep a few kits at home.

    snapplecrapple
mr kramer, your majesty, has the fact that steven started as a drummer affected you in any way?
Yes, it's helped make me a better drummer.

    NYaerofan
What exactly IS it that Steven comes over and says to you, when he comes up to your drum set during a concert?
    He says "I love you"...

    Comment from Joey Kramer
Zildjian has just informed me that there are so many questions the server is unable to handle them all. I'm sorry if I couldn't answer your question, but I will do this again when we get back from South America.

    Comment from Joey Kramer
I also want to tell you to visit www.joeykramer.com for details on a chance to talk with me live on the telephone and win some cool prizes from Zildjian and DW. I want to thank you all for being here tonight - I've had a great time.

Hamilton's back in the saddle again

    Boston Globe, MA
    April 5, 2007

If you were expecting Tom Hamilton to take time off, forget it. The Aerosmith bassist, who has spent the better part of a year battling throat cancer, is back on his feet and ready to rock. Tuesday the band is bound for Brazil for a few South American shows and then to Europe for a full-blown summer tour. "The doctors warned me that the treatment would be an ordeal, and it was," said Hamilton, talking for the first time about the tumor detected last May at the base of his tongue. Tonight, as he has for the past several years, Hamilton is taking part in Banned in Boston , the annual madcap musical revue benefiting Urban Improv . An aspiring actor once upon a time, he'll play Borat in the show. (Nothing if not a good sport, Hamilton has also performed as Barbara Bush and Camilla Parker Bowles.) "Part of this is about giving back," he said, "and part of it's about having fun and participating." Talking about the cancer, Hamilton said he was treated at Massachusetts General Hospital for seven weeks last summer, receiving both radiation and chemotherapy. "Initially, I remember thinking, 'This really doesn't go with my plans,' " the fit, 55-year-old rocker joked. "But I was told I'd crash eventually if I tried to keep up my schedule, so I just surrendered." Hamilton, who admits he was in excruc iating pain by the fourth week of radiation, missed several Aerosmith dates last fall -- his first absences since the band got together in 1970. "Something like this really forces you to think how you're going to live without the band, and it's not pleasant," he said. "But then you get little whispers from inside saying, 'It'll be OK.' " For now, Hamilton is cancer-free and focused on the future. "I'm having a good time," he said, getting into his powder-blue Maserati. "I feel good again."

    Perry's boys power up

Tom Hamilton's bandmate, Joe Perry, was at T.T. the Bear's the other night when his sons, Adrian and Tony, took the stage. Two-thirds of a band called TAB -- their Duxbury buddy Ben Tileson completes the power trio -- the Perry progeny were playing only their third show. "They've improved 100 percent," said the Aerosmith axman, who watched his sons from the soundboard. "They're doing what they want to do. I haven't given them any advice unless they ask for it." The band rocked a few tunes from their forthcoming disc, "34 Percent Louder," before treating the crowd to high-octane covers of The Who's "My Generation" and Deep Purple's "Highway Star."

Cookin' up a plan: Cambridge chef Jody Adams of Rialto and Aerosmith ham-about-town Tom Hamilton cook up a crazy photo op to promote tomorrow night's annual `Banned in Boston' comedy revue at Avalon. Gov. Deval Patrick, Mayor Tom Menino, Red Sox sweeties Larry and Stacey Lucchino, congressmen Barney Frank and Marty Meehan and the Herald's own Michele McPhee will also strut their silly stuff for Urban Improv's violence prevention program.

Aerosmith Guitarist Talks About Band's Longevity, Songwriting Process

    Blabbermouth.net, NY
    April 4, 2007

Ken Sharp of Goldmine magazine recently conducted an interview with Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford about the band's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame career. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Goldmine: It's been over 30 years since Aerosmith formed. Are you amazed that the band is still going strong?

Brad Whitford: On a daily basis, yes [laughs]. No, I guess not at this point. We've just weathered so many different kinds of events and storms and this and that. I have to attribute that to the music that we've created and the music we continue to be able to create and the way that we perform together is what really drives the whole machine. Certainly there's enough things on the outside of that, once you get off that stage, there's still so much bullshit that can drive anybody crazy. At this point in my life probably my biggest beef is the travel. I just don't know how much longer I can do that. It's a very rough lifestyle. Not too many bands have to do it this long because they just don't stay together [laughs]. A lot of people return to some sort of normal schedule. The travel is really rough, being away from home; having a lot of separation away from the family does not sit well with my inner self.

Goldmine: As a songwriter you've contributed songs to the band on a much smaller scale than say Steven or Joe. Do you regret that you didn't push your writing with the band earlier in your career?

Brad Whitford: No, I don't regret it. It's just the nature of the way things have gone. I literally got pushed out of the writing circle. I don't consider myself a terribly prolific writer. I can write music with other people if they're better songwriters than I am. I really can't create a song. It's very difficult to do. That's why the people that can do it are very few and far between. I'm certainly not that type of a guy. More of a guitar player, more of the kind of [guy] who comes up with enough riffs and ideas to write a song. But to write lyrics and come up with a melody for it, it won't happen.

Goldmine: In the '70s The Rolling Stones were the band's greatest influence. But it seems today that The Beatles exert a more profound influence on the band's songwriting with songs like "Jaded", "What It Takes", "Livin' On The Edge" and "Amazing".

Brad Whitford: It's absolutely true. We all love that music, Steven especially. A lot of that Beatles influence comes from Steven's collaboration with Mark Hudson, both of whom are absolute Beatles freaks. So between the two of them you get this quantified [laughs] Beatles love. They try and apply some of those harmonies, some of those approaches, some of the rhythm changes, some of the guitar sounds. A lot of different things that the Beatles did that make you go, [speaks reverentially] "Woah, man" [laughs]. So I guess the goal is to try and emulate probably some of the best music of the last 50 years, which has to be The Beatles.

Goldmine: That's true, it's almost like the band is shying away from the grittier Stones inspired tunes like "Mama Kin".

Brad Whitford: That's the commercial "stay on top" thing. A big part of Aerosmith has become business. It's where we are, it's where we put ourselves and there's a lot of pressure there. There's a lot of desire for the band to stay where it is as a commercial success.

Goldmine: That brings up the point that in the '70s it seemed that Aerosmith was writing from a purer standpoint, not tailoring songs to be radio hits. Today it seems there's a lot more thought behind constructing songs that will keep the band's commercial standing. Would you say that's true?

Brad Whitford: That's absolutely true. It's not frustrating for me. I think that we can manage to do that, which is not easy to do, and I can be part of it. I'm very pleased about it. It's not a creative outlet much for me anymore. When I play, the creative part for me is going into the studio with guys like Marti Frederiksen and Mark Hudson. I've been listening to this particular tune and we just roll it and I play some things and they go, "Oh, that's great, that's great! Let's do that, oh man!" They give you a tremendous amount of freedom. It's not like they say, "Here, we need this guitar part here and this guitar part here." So that's a lot of fun for me.

    Aerosmith to rock P.E.I.

    ChronicleHerald.ca, Canada
    April 3, 2007

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Aerosmith are rolling onto Prince Edward Island this summer.

The long-rumoured concert at the Charlottetown Driving Park Entertainment Centre on Saturday, July 21, was made official in a news release Monday from the promoter.

The hard-rocking band began in Boston about 37 years ago and is credited with selling about 100 million albums. The hits spun off its 25 titles include Dream On, Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way, Dude Looks Like a Lady, Angel, Janie’s Got a Gun, The Other Side, Livin’ on the Edge, Cryin’, Crazy and I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.

The event, dubbed Blast at the Beach, is touted as a 10-hour day of music. More acts are to be announced.

Concert producer David Carver said in the news release that tickets will be priced around $60 plus tax and service charges. A limited number of so-called VIP tickets will also be available. No information about an on-sale date was released.

More news is to be posted at www.blastatthebeach.com

CDP hosted a concert last year headlined by Black Eyed Peas after area residents voiced concerns about the proposed site at the Vista Bay campground in Alexandra.

    Director White knows Boston?s game

    Boston Globe, MA
    April 3, 2007

Leave it to Mike White to be the guy who badmouths the Bosox on Opening Day. The celebrated screenwriter of such dark comedies as "Chuck & Buck" and "The Good Girl" believes the city's obsession with baseball is way over the top. "[The Red Sox] are on every newscast and every magazine cover here," said White, a Wesleyan grad who was in the Hub yesterday to promote his latest laugher, "Year of the Dog." "OK, I get it -- they're the Red Sox. . . . What you realize is that baseball's a crazy, cult-like, religious thing in Boston." The new movie, which stars Molly Shannon as a woman whose life falls apart after her four-legged friend dies, is White's directorial debut. "Working with the dogs was great," he said, "it was the babies who were a nightmare." Asked to explain his famously skewed sensibility, White said he can't help himself. "I like it when people don't know if they should laugh or cry," he said. Most folks laughed at "The School of Rock," the Jack Black box-office hit written by White. Why, we wondered, did Boston bad boys Aerosmith not make the movie's soundtrack ? "A lot of people think I'm a big music fan because of that movie, but I'm not, really," he said. "When Rush comes to Hollywood, they seek me out to party. It's weird." As for Aerosmith, don't feel bad for them. "They're doing just fine without a shout-out from me," he said.
