Next on Animal Planet...
CNN.com
April 28, 2006
The Discovery Channel's Animal Planet has been taking a close look at critters for a decade. Maureen Smith, executive vice president and general manager of the network, spoke with CNN.com about what it's like working with wild animals and some even wilder hosts. Together, we tackled the tough questions......
CNN:
You've had some big names host Animal Planet shows or appear on the shows with their pets. Who are some of the most surprising celebrity fans of Animal Planet you've met?
Smith:
I think Joe Perry of Aerosmith. He's this legendary rock 'n' roll rock star, and he also leads this other life where he's this incredibly wonderful family man, and he and his wife Billy own this amazing farm way out in Vermont, where they ride Friesian horses, and it's their getaway. And they have dogs, and they have reptiles, and they're huge Animal Planet fans and wonderful, wonderful people.....

Movies That Rock - Decline Of Western Civilization II
Ozzy Osbourne, Gene Simmons, and Aerosmith's Joe Perry and Steven Tyler are among the Heavy Metal artists interviewed in The Decline of Western Civilization 2: The Metal Years. This follow-up to filmmaker Penelope Spheeris' classic 1981 "punk" documentary, The Decline of Western Civilization is a bit more reflective and word-dominated than its predecessor, but no less entertaining. One striking aspect of the film is its before-and-after comparisons of the impact of MTV. Heavy Metal newcomers tend to overpraise the cable service, while the "oldsters" implicitly decry the mainstreaming -- and in some cases, homogenizing -- of their best work.

Celebrities Have The “Look”
Midwest Beat Magazine

The Evil Eye is an ancient belief that has roots in almost every culture in the modern world. Believed to protect its wearer by repelling the negative thoughts and energies of others, it has recently become one of Hollywood's most popular fashion statements. One woman who is responsible for the resurgence of this belief, and the resulting popularity, is Annette Wright, owner of Divine Invention....
The “Look” has become quite popular among many of California's residents, including some of it’s biggest celebrities. “Sometimes I’ll pull up to a stoplight,” says Wright, “and find the person in the car next to me has their hair up using one of my bracelets. It’s an extremely satisfying feeling.”
Wright would soon experience another satisfying feeling, from a phone call that came a few nights later. After reading that Aerosmith front man, Steven Tyler, was seen having an “Evil Eye” drawn on each shoulder before going on-stage, she sent over a gift basket of some bracelets and a Divine Invention guitar strap. Wright received a call two days later from Tyler himself, and again on his daughter’s birthday, when some of his daughters friends failed in their attempt to part Tyler from his bracelets....

Touring Out Of Slump
Monsters and Critics.com, UK
April 25, 2006
For the first time in a while, the concert business has put up some numbers worthy of applause.
With nearly $375 million in grosses and 7.3 million in attendance for first-quarter 2006, the North American concert business shows signs of emerging from a two-year slump.
Driven by such acts as Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Coldplay and Aerosmith, North American concert dollars are up 28 percent from a year ago, and attendance is up 19 percent, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. Global numbers, with plenty of help from U2`s Vertigo tour, are up about half that amount in both categories.
The strong start has promoters enthusiastic. 'All artists were playing to bigger audiences than ever, [which] shows the fans will come when given a quality show,' Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino says.....

North Brookfield, Mass.-- .....Long View Farm is about as far as you can get, literally and figuratively, from a big-city recording studio. It has no street address. Horses roam the grounds and some doorways are too low for guitarists to pass through without hitting their heads.... Opened in 1975 as a residential recording facility, Long View Farm has attracted such bands as the Rolling Stones, Cat Stevens, Aerosmith, Creed, Jet, Indigo Girls, and Limp Bizkit....
Across the meadow from the farmhouse is the "writer's shack," where Steven Tyler wrote songs for the 1993 disc "Get a Grip." Aerosmith fans who've wondered why the album's cover features a pierced cow's udder will be happy to learn that it was inspired by the shack's unobstructed view of the dairy farm next door....

Smoking Section

April 21, 2006
From Aerosmith to Neil Young

Italian stallion - Photo by David Atlas
Just like all you headbangers out there, the Smoking Section was bummed to learn that Aerosmith were forced to shut down their 2006 tour -- and even more upset to learn that it was because Steven Tyler had to undergo throat surgery. Would one of rock's greatest voices -- the guy who delivered to us "Dream On," "Lord of the Thighs," "Back in the Saddle" and "Cheney's Got a Gun" -- be silenced forever? Could the rumblings about throat cancer be true? Since he's on the doc's orders not to talk, how could we even ask him? E-mail! "I've got good news and bad news," Tyler wrote back. "The good: They zapped a broken blood vessel in my voice box and it's healed. The bad: I gotta shut up. No talking for a month. Help! That's impossible! Don't they know I'm Italian?!" Also -- to further cheer you up -- Tyler promises the band will return to the road later this year. Yessss! Get well, Stevie, baby! We love ya!

Aerosmith's drummer Joey Kramer became the first person in the United States to take ownership of the 2006 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Kramer was at the new Lamborghini Boston dealership in Peabody yesterday when the lovely convertible arrived from Italy. The 10-cylinder car, which one car magazine said can hit a top speed of 195 mph, cost a cool $230,000. Because Kramer was promised the car yesterday, it was sent by plane to Logan rather than shipped to South Boston.

Aerosmith Bassist Comments On Cancelled Tour

Tour Was Cancelled To Make Sure Band Could Go On
Launch Radio Networks has issued the following report:
Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is doing much better now that he's had an operation on his ailing throat. The group cancelled the last three weeks of their spring tour with Cheap Trick because of the injury, and bassist Tom Hamilton told Launch that the decision was made to allow Tyler to heal, and to make sure the band will continue. "It's like, you know, a sports injury," he said. "If it's there, and if there's a chance that you could injure it permanently by not taking care of it, then that's what you do. You've gotta follow doctor's orders. Steven had a wear-and-tear thing happening. It was a crossroads — we had to make a decision — and we decided that we should lay off the rest of the tour, and come back in September and go back out."
Hamilton also told Launch that Tyler has been badly injured before and does everything he can to perform: "He took his knee out on stage a few years ago, and he just, he powers through it, he really does sacrifice his body, and so he's just gotta maybe ease up on that. (laughs) I don't, I don't ever see him doing it, but I think... you know, he's actually pretty good at taking care of his throat, so I think he's just gonna get even more intense about it."

Aero Force One
Okay AF1’ers - another holiday, another contest - you know the drill by now and we know those creative juices have been flowing in all of your brains since you packed all your Christmas Toys in the Attic. Easter time is fast approaching, so put the Bad Boys of Boston in hard-boiled form and send us your pics. Bunnies, eggs, peeps, flowers, plastic hay: use whatever you need to give us a spring themed Aerosmith entry that reminds us a little of Easter. Who says rock n’ roll can’t go pastel? Last time we ran this contest, we got some wild entries of rabbits on Harleys and full cartons of eggshell concerts. Makes the Hatch Shell in Boston have a different ring to it, huh?
Ten contest winners will receive the incredible poster, “In The Beginning,” the psychedelic and awesome poster now in the AF1 Store. The contest entries will be judged on spirit and creative insanity!
....Contest ends on Friday, May 12th at 11:59 pm....

Robert Randolph's Inspiration
Charlotte Observer, NC
April 14, 2006
Robert Randolph isn't your typical rock star. He wasn't reared on rock or blues.... He discovered favorite Stevie Ray Vaughan shortly before making the leap from church to clubs. Over the last five years he's worked his way through the great American classic rock songbook from Vaughan, Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix to more recently Led Zeppelin, Maroon 5 and Green Day.
It's those artists, as well as friends Carlos Santana, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, and Rob Thomas, whom he drew on while writing and recording his upcoming sophomore album. Tentatively titled "Color Blind," it's due in early summer....

News and Scenes from the Road
Aero Force One
April 12, 2006
"Hi Everyone!
Since the guys are laying low this month while Steven continues to recover from his surgery, I thought I would go through a bunch of pictures I took that didn't make the NFTR for lack of space. Some of them you may have seen. I hope you like them.
On the news front:
If you don't own a copy of the movie "This Thing Of Ours" go out and get it. The movie has tons of Aero ties. Brad and his son are both in it. Joe wrote a ton of music that is in the film.
Steven and Joe appear in the Porch Ghouls video that is included with the movie. Their segment was filmed at Joe's house in Massachusetts. Also in the video and film is Frank Vincent who is best known for playing Phil Leotardo on The Sopranos. Frank also introduced Aerosmith at one of their Madison Square Garden shows. Jack Douglas produced all the music in the film. Jack as you all know had his hand in producing some of the greatest music Aerosmith has ever put out including the most recent studio album "Honkin' on Bobo"! It is a must for any die hard Aerosmith fan.
Joe and his sons Tony and Roman recently did a photo shoot in NYC. Their photo will be in an upcoming Father's Day issue of Best Life magazine. Be sure to check it out! I got to check out a great Boston band "Dropkick Murphys" at Avalon Club across from Fenway Park last month. This band sold out the 2000 seat club for 5 straight days. What bit of info does this have to do with Aerosmith? Well, back in 1996 when the band was getting ready to go on their first tour.
The drummer's cymbals were all cracked and broken. He couldn't afford to buy any cymbals or sticks at the time. I mentioned this to Joey and he gave him all brand new cymbals and twigs. 10 years later this band is still going strong and playing in front of thousands of fans across the world. Speaking of Fenway, the Sox are back and kicking ass! I went to opening day this week and the atmosphere at that old bandbox was amazing. I pictured what it would be like seeing a band at that park.
The Stones and Bruce have played there and this year Dave Matthews will.
See you at the Beach!

"This is a cool little audio slideshow with roots in the Boys' hometown - a review of the best shows from legendary Boston Globe music critic Steve Morse. Aerosmith is a short blip in this recap, but it shows where they rank as he notes that ANY of their shows could make the 'best of...' and they are all 'money in the bank.' He then goes on to reminisce about more unusual standout shows from Pearl Jam, Pete Townsend, Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd. Music fans should enjoy it...."

Tom's Comments to Launch Radio

Aerosmith Bassist Glad To Help Anti-Violence Organization
Launch Radio Networks reports: Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton was one of the featured performers on Friday, April 7, at the annual "Banned In Boston" anti-violence benefit. He portrayed former First Lady Barbara Bush, and it was his fourth appearance in drag, having been Laura Bush, Martha Stewart, and Camilla Parker Bowles in years past, and he's also portrayed the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski. The event raised money for Urban Improv, which helps young people understand and deal with violence and other issues, and Hamilton told Launch the group's work is really important. "There's a bunch of different programs like this, but it's trying to find a way to do something about violence in the schools," he said. "You know, you can make all the rules you want, and put up metal detectors, and search kid's backpacks and stuff, but the way that's really gonna work to create more safety in the schools is for kids to just feel that there is a way out of these situations."
Hamilton also told Launch he's glad to have the chance to help out some people who are less fortunate than he's been in his life and career. "I just like the idea that it's sort of the well-to-do white community reaching out to the inner-city minority community, and show people that, you know, you can't stereotype," he said. "You know, there's a lot of people who do give a s--t, and not just the people that are in those neighborhoods."
This was the 11th annual "Banned In Boston" show. It puts entertainers, business leaders, and politicians together to poke fun at local and national news stories, all while raising several hundred thousand dollars for Urban Improv's programs in the New England area. More information about the group can be found at UrbanImprov.org

Brad Whitford On Stage for Hendrix Tribute Set
‘Live at Woodstock’ DVD improves Hendrix experience
Blabbermouth.net
Jimi Hendrix Woodstock Footage To Be Shown In Boston
TheRockRadio.com is reporting that a salute to Jimi Hendrix.... (took place April 6, 2006) in Boston. The family-owned Experience Hendrix LLC... arranged for the newly released Jimi Hendrix Live At Woodstock to be shown at the Axis nightclub near Fenway Park.....
Boston Herald
April 8, 2006
...The Axis screening was followed by an enjoyable Q&A session with Hendrix’s bassist Billy Cox and his recording engineer Eddie Kramer....
Cox then took the stage with a handful of guests for a 90-minute tribute set. A longtime Hendrix disciple, Memphis guitarist Eric Gales, opened with a "Foxey Lady" that crossed Hendrix tones with modern metal. Ex-Earth, Wind & Fire guitarist Sheldon Reynolds gave a funkier slant; and things livened up again when Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford joined for a three-way guitar duel on "Spanish Castle Magic" and "Red House."
Cox and ex-Stevie Ray Vaughan drummer Chris Layton formed a killer rhythm section, reining in the jams when they started to wander. It was one of the most capable Hendrix tribute bands anyone’s likely to see....

Rocker’s pearls of wisdom in role of Barbara Bush
Boston Herald, MA
April 6, 2006
Aerosmith bass biggie Tom Hamilton, who appears frightened by the sight of former first lady Barbara Bush, will slap on a gray wig to play Dubya’s mom tomorrow night at the 11th annual “Banned in Boston” benefit at Avalon.
As you know, the Boston bad boy has had lots of time to learn his lines for the Urban Improv laugh party since the band pulled the plug on its spring tour last month. Tom told WZLX-FM’s Carlson & McKenzie yesterday that front man Steven Tyler’s throat had an “overuse injury...like tendonitis” that forced them to cancel shows.
“He had this minor, minor, minor thing done and it went really well,” Hamilton told the morning men.
Actually, Steven’s been telling fans that he burst a blood vessel in his throat that required laser surgery. But why skeeve ’ZLX listeners trying to eat their Cheerios?
Anyway, the band will head back out on tour this fall after spending the summer in the studio recording new Aerotunes, Tom told the Classic Rock crew.
As for his turn as the Leader of the Free World’s mother on stage at Avalon, Tom told C & M he’s used to performing in drag at the “Banned” brouhaha. He’s channeled many famous dames over the years such as Martha Stewart, Julia Child and Camilla Parker-Bowles.
“I think it’s because I’m the guy with the longest hair,” he said.

Aerosmith Bassist 'Banned In Boston'
93X Rock News, MN
April 5, 2006
Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton will be "Banned In Boston" for the fourth time this Friday night (April 7), when he will put his best dress on for charity at the Avalon. Hamilton will be in costume as former First Lady Barbara Bush at the 11th annual "Banned In Boston" charity event, which raises money for Urban Improv, a theater-based violence prevention program. Hamilton has participated in the antics-driven comedic musical review three times before, including gigs as Camilla Parker Bowles, Laura Bush and Martha Stewart. "I always seem to find myself cast in drag," laughs Hamilton. "I seem to be getting kind of good at it, which worries me."
"Banned in Boston" is the one night a year when Boston lets go of its conservative image and has a good laugh at itself–all in the name of charity. "Banned In Boston" raises $400,000 of Urban Improv's annual budget, making their workshops and programs a reality for 6,000 students in Boston and throughout the region each year. Other notable participants this year's event at include Boston Mayor Tom Menino, and gubernatorial candidates Attorney General Tom Reilly, Christy Mihos and Deval Patrick.

Dude looks like he’s better
Word is, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is Back in the Saddle after undergoing laser surgery on his throat.
Marge, a die-hard Aeroforce One member, tracked down Tyler while he was trying on outfits at Riccardi on Newbury Street the other day and reports he’s still whispering but managed somehow to out-talk her!
“He explained to me that he burst a blood vessel in his throat and had to have laser surgery to repair it,” blogged the superfan. “He was wearing a groovy red scarf around his neck and I think I saw a scar when he was re-tying it.”
Aerosmith, as we’ve told you so many times before, had to scrap the remainder of their “Rockin’ the Joint” after Steven’s voice went on a Not-So-Permanent Vacation.

Aerosmith's Tom Hamilton Still Stirs It Up
Bass Player Magazine
April 2, 2006

Cookin'!
Show up on time (or close to it), tear through the old songs, trot out the classic power ballad for the encore, and cash the check. It’s a formula followed by more and more aging rock stars—mostly because there are more and more aging rock stars. And judging from the size of their live audiences, there’s certainly nothing too offensive about this approach.
But good rock & roll has never had much to do with nostalgia, and it’s worth noting that there is another way to do it: You can pepper your set lists with lesser-known, 30-year-old album cuts that mean as much to the audience as the AOR radio staples. You can continually revisit obscure cover tunes from the band’s earliest days. You can take stylistic chances with entire albums of meaningful—if somewhat left-of-center—material. You can take similar chances by mixing in small-venue shows with the arena gigs. And you can continue producing chart-topping hits, just as you insist on playing your instrument every single day, forever exploring and critiquing your own playing even as you work diligently to expand its boundaries.
Tom Hamilton and his long-time Aerosmith mates (Steven Tyler, vocals; Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, guitars; and Joey Kramer, drums) have chosen Plan B, and if ticket sales are any indication, it’s been the right choice all along. The band’s catalog includes enough all-time rock & roll hits to fill out a set list and then some, but Aerosmith continues to produce radio-ready hits with alarming frequency. Yet the band insists on such adventures as 2004’s Honkin’ on Bobo, an entire disc of blues tunes that surprised everyone—especially Aerosmith—by entrenching itself on the blues charts. And while plenty of fans would show up every night to hear Hamilton’s righteous “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion” grooves, the mellow, soft-spoken bassist insists on a rigid daily practice routine to push his playing in new directions.
The set list for the new live album, Rockin’ the Joint, is a real treat for serious fans. How did you settle on those songs?
We’d been wanting to work with Dick Carruthers, the rock & roll documentary filmmaker, so we decided to film and record three shows: one at The Joint [at Las Vegas’s Hard Rock Hotel & Casino] and two arena shows in California. When we got to Vegas and were picking songs, we realized we could take some chances. If they came out well, we’d have them on tape—and if they were bad, well, we’d only screwed up in front of 1,500 people. So we brought out “Seasons of Wither,” “No More No More,” and a song called “Rattlesnake Shake.”
I’m glad you mentioned that song. It’s almost the perfect cover tune for Aerosmith.
Yes, that song is like the Rosetta Stone of this band’s style. A lot of people don’t know that Fleetwood Mac was a kick-ass blues-rock band back in the ’60s, but I always like to point that out. Joe and I used to meet at this underground club called the Boston Tea Party and see them play, and I’ll never forget their amp line. It was a solid wall of Fender Showman amps; it was just so unbelievably cool-looking to a couple of teenage kids who were still saving up to buy their first good amplifier.
Anyway, they had an album called Then Play On, and “Rattlesnake Shake” is on there, followed by this fast boogie jam called “Searching for Madge.” I don’t know if they meant those two songs to always be associated with each other, but for Joe and me, it was all one big, long song. Whenever we’d see them live, they’d play “Rattlesnake Shake,” and they always did a real good job of explaining the song’s subject matter. I’m not sure many people realize what it’s about, but whenever they’d get to the part where the band stops, and you hear a maraca shaking, Mick Fleetwood—who used to have hair down to his ass—would jump up from behind the drums and show these two wooden balls hanging from his belt on a piece of rawhide. He’d hook his finger in there and, you know, pretend he was stabbing a duck in his lap [laughs]. It was hilarious, and we thought, Oh, my God, that is so cool! So you can see we’ve always loved that song. In fact, Joe and I used to play it in bands two or three years before Aerosmith got together. Now we almost feel like it’s ours!
It’s surprising how many Aerosmith songs, old and new, work so well in large and small settings. What do you think gives a song this power, regardless of the setting?
A lot of it is dynamics, and making sure you have parts where tension builds and parts where it all just spills over. It’s a classic paradigm of hard rock music, really: songs that start out quiet and dreamy, and then the big part everybody loves comes crashing in. That’s when everybody starts putting up the devil sign and making that face you make with your lips poking out when something sounds very, very cool.
At what point did you begin to realize you could be in a band that makes people feel like that?
I know exactly when it happened. I remember seeing Spirit at the Boston Tea Party, watching their bass player—who just happened to be a tall blond guy—and saying to myself, “You know, I could do that.” I remember having the distinct feeling that I could. That was really big for me, because as much as I loved music, and as much time as I’d spent learning how to play, I also had the typical disbelief that I could really do things the way my heroes were doing them. The common wisdom is still that your chances of doing that and ever making a living at it are practically nil, and I bought into that as a teenager. At least I did until that moment, at that show, that night—when I saw that bass player and realized, Wow, there’s no reason I can’t play that role.
Did Aerosmith click right away?
We have a great combination that’s been there from day one. Joe and I used to play in bands together when we were teenagers, and all we wanted to do was play the loudest, fastest songs we possibly could. We didn’t know how to play with dynamics, and our guitars were probably barely in tune. So we were pretty rough in terms of music theory and harmony....

Since ST himself has been telling locals the exact reason for his surgery...I can now let it out:
He had a popped blood vessel in his throat, that required laser surgery to fix. Whether this was done on tour...
or after the Hollywood show shouting match hasnt been determined :):):)
So ENOUGH of the cancer talk, ok? :)
3/31/06 - 10:42 pm
After the show in Hollywood, FL...Steven and a sound tech were in a heated debate over that nights sound.
Steven went off on the dude.
4/1/06 - 10:37 am
Im not sure WHEN he did it...but I do know the night of the Hollywood show pushed that vessel to the extreme....thats for sure :)
Anywyas, its in the past. Im looking forward to mid aug...when the band starts up again on tour.
